Hayward or Pentair DE Filter

Hi All... We are looking to purchase a 21' AGP(Zodiac Revelation). I've already kinda settled on a DE filter and the dealer said I can have my choice of Pentair Star 50(ST50) or Hayward EC40. He tells me the Hayward is finger type and the Pentair is grid type. Any thoughts on which I should get would be appreciated.

Both are going to give you the same result filtering down to about 3-5 microns. Although I am a big fan of grids, Hayward makes a great easy to use product called the Perflex (EC40). Instead of grids they use flex tubes that can be easier to maintain and more durable. Most customers tend to use the Hayward system over the Pentair for ease of use.

Why is the Hayward easier? The Hayward can be bumped but the Pentair has a knob on top that I'm told does essentially the same thing. You twist the knob and it knocks the DE down. Thanks for your reply!

The rotor comes out after you remove the handle and extension. First remove the center rod(it is threaded in)and manifold. Next remove the backwash handle,compression ring and tank. Then remove the handle extension from the rotor shaft. Pull on the rotor while turning it and it will come out. The rotor seals are tapered so make sure the line in the vertical rotor seal is on the top side. You will also want to replace the rotor shaft o ring and valve body o ring. Use only silicone grease to lube the seal and o ring.

I dont really have an opinion on differences between the 2 filtersyou mentioned, but I think you should reconsider the oversized filters. One,with 500+ feet of filter area you wont have to clean the filter as often, in fact on most pools I only do this every 6 mos. Second, the cartride on the small filter usually needs to be replaced every year while the big filters need new carts. typically every 4-5 years so the cost is the same. If you dont want to spend all that money at once, buy 1 cart a month.

If you like a tank that's easy to get in and out of and a grid assembly that's a bit tough to put together, than the Pentair is for you. If you like a tank that is difficult to get in and out of but a grid assembly that is pretty easy, than the Hayward is for you. If you want the best of both worlds, than the Pentair Quad DE is for you. The Hayward tanks are less reliable as they tend to crack at 3-5 years more often.
