Ipe Deck Fascia

OK, so I am finally getting around to Phase 2 of my Ipe deck project. I know this has been going on for a long time, but I had to finish paying off Phase 1 first.

My project is simply to cover the fascia and install some deck lighting. My first question is in regards to the fascia. I have 2x10 joists that I am covering. My options are:

1) Butt two 1x6's up and let them hand down below the 2x10

2) Have 1x6's ripped to size and put a radius back on the ripped edge to create a defined seam.

3) Have 1x6's ripped to size and do not put a radius back on the ripped edge and just butt them up tight.

I am also not opposed to going a different route with other fascia material and using maybe a 1x10 of some other material.

Any thoughts?

Install 1 1/2'' endgrain trim all around the outside.

Run the 1x6 up and down buting up to the bottom of the trim hanging down 1''. J.

I have already installed the 1 1/2" endgrain all around the outside.

I think the look I am going for is more the horizontal running boards. Do you think leaving the 1x6's hanging down 1" or 1 1/2" would be a problem?

Hey thanks for the responses. I've decided to install a small concrete pad next to the deck and build a platform (the elevation of the deck at this point is under 24 inches and won't impede airflow under the deck) to permanently house the smoker and grill. Framing with Ipe would be very costley in lumber and Labor. Very Very costley. Defentley Do Not use cedar for the frame. Most of us use ground contact preasure treated lumber for the frame. I have skirted the outside of the frame with ipe.However is you really want 6x6 in ipe East Teak will be glad to sell them to you. Your Builder might be in the habit of using the frame support posts for the handrail posts, that is going all the way up with the 6x6. This kind of building is ice age old but a lot of guys just wont stop doing what they have always done. For the most part House Builders do not keep up with the trade of Deck Building,and dont want to. Its one of the last things to do after dealing with everything else and thats the least important thing and they defentley do not want Anyone telling them what to do. But just in case>>> creet piers,deck frame posts land on the piers not in them,beams land on the posts,joist in on 16'' centers. Do not over span the joists just adding size to the joists will not take the bounse out of the frame. Install the posts for the rail system in the frame,they will be seperate from the frame posts, these can be pt 4x4s or 6x6s whatever then build ipe post wrapps out of 3/4 material this way you get the rail posts any size any shape and any place you want. Its possible to wrap the frame posts in ipe as well There is one half a chance in 10,000 your builder is going to pay any attention to any of this. J.

1. I would go w/ 2X10s for the ledger & joists. While most 2X8s can span 12 feet it depends on your local jurisdiction's code & what the live & dead loads are, the deflection coefficients, and the type joists. Plus 2X10s will reduce the floor bounce better than 2X8s. Also, since you are cantilevering the IRC code requires that 2X10 joists be used. The size girder is dependant on the post spacing. I would go w/ 5 posts spaced at 6'. Three 2X10s are plenty sufficient for that. 2. I would go w/ 5/4 if money is no object & probably even it it was. Less cupping typically & if you want to run the decking on a diagonal that increases the span but no problem w/ 5/4 IPE. 3. The joist's spacing is related to the joist span (which is 12' approximately (I guess 11' since it sounds like it will be cantilevered by 1')) and to the size & type of joists used. I would go w/ 16" OC.

Agreed to the silvering! Penofin or Messmer’s UV+ you can’t go wrong with, but everyone has their personal preference. Black locust is a great wood (the heartwood), but the sap wood will rot out in no time. Structurally dimensional black locust lumber (for any use beyond decking) meets no building codes and most suppliers won’t even sell it due to the liability risk. By purchasing tropical hardwoods you can actually help preserves the rainforest by putting an economic value on the timber and encouraging sustainable forestry. If the Forest has no value then ranchers and farmers will clear cut it for soybean fields and cattle ranching...., but this is better saved for a whole different thread!

Nawww it looks a lot better than trying to make them flush and the ipe will be way stable enough. You might beval the ends with an orbital. I just dont like the horiontal look ,Ya know every 5 1/2'' seems like more detail to me.

Riles , you could always glue up the the stock to the width you want if you still go leangth ways that would look pretty cool.
Also tightbond has come up with an construstion adhesive that would work real well with the install. I was happy to find the new stuff they must have passed thrugh the green mafia somehow speaking of them fools its a good thing the global warming mith has gone the way of the spotted owl but a shame so much money was spent on it.

Some day you will be done with that thing!!! JonMon

If we do decide to run them vertical, do you fasten these with one screw in each corner, glue them? Just curious. We are going to put it up each way and then determine which we like.

I use a griprite 1 1/2'' nailer ( Great air tool I bought the three pack ) and tightbond con adhesive. J.

I did your choice #1, rounded off the ends with a router, glued with construction adhesive and nailed with 2" SS finish nails. Can't wait until it's warm enough to plant some bushes to cover up the rest of the PT.

Yes, that is the look that I was leaning towards. I love the way your deck truned out. Are your rim joists 2x10"? Not sure I am following what you routed? Just the ends where it makes a ninety degree turn or did you route the length of the board?

Yes, the joists are 2x10, so the fascia goes a couple inches below the bottom of the joist. The routering/rounding was just on the ends, to make a "bullnose" of sorts. I figured that if I mitered the corners they'd gap with the expand/contract cycle, so I just rounded out the edge of the outside board on each corner. Same thing I did with the stair risers, bullnosing over the boards I put along the stringers. And with the bench fascia.

Weedyacres, what is your railing made of? It looks like a 2x4 both top and bottom with a 1x4 cap. Could you contact me offline (see my page for link), I have a couple of other questions for you and I see I am doing somethings very similar to you. Looks awesome!!
