I had a stomach virus last summer- vomiting, diarrhea, fever and chills, plus chest pains so bad I went to the ER. They thought I was having a heart attack (I'm a 50 plus female) . Took two days to subside.

Yes, you can have a fever with food poisoning. If you still have the fever you should probably call a doctor. Also be careful of dehydration.

Food poisoning symptoms vary with the source of contamination. Most types of food poisoning cause one or more of the following signs and symptoms:

Extreme pain or severe abdominal cramping
An oral temperature higher than 101.5 F (38.6 C)
Signs or symptoms of dehydration �" excessive thirst, dry mouth, little or no urination, severe weakness, dizziness or lightheadedness

Of course, keep in mind that the virus you may have does not necessarily mean it was transmitted by food. (I have a cousin who every time he gets a stomach ache he claims it's "food poisoning" and had to be from wherever he last ate!) The (assumed) virus could have been received from human contact or other ways. Nevertheless it sounds like you should get checked out if symptoms persist. Take care of yourself and hope you're feeling better soon.

You have all the symptoms I had when I ate cantaloupe once. I thought it was a virus and it went away in a few days. Same as you, Harry had eaten the same thing. Next time we had cantaloupe the same thing happened. NOT a good way to find out that after 50+ years of loving it you're allergic to cantaloupe! So think about what you eat and eliminate one thing at a time.

I really, really had hoped I'd outgrown allergies.

You are all very kind to reply. I'm no longer feverish, no chills, no vomiting, just still sore 'innards'. I guess this is a bug that hasn't decided to give up yet. I'm not going to call my MD unless this gets worse instead of (slowly) better. I'm going to try a little Pepto Bismol to stop the cramping and frequent visits to the toilet. It's probably a virus -- nothing MD can do to help.

Flu vaccine does not necessarily stop one from getting the flu, but it will prevent extremely serious complications from the flu.

When you have food poisoning and result in diarrhea and/or vomiting, you'd lose body fluid quite quickly. You'd need to prevent from dehydration by drinking lots of fluids. The most favorable is gatorate because it contains both salt and sugar which the body needs at the time. If you don't have it, you can do a similar mixture, dissolve some salt & sugar with water. For your fever, you can take aspirin or tylenol to lower it.

As someone already mentioned, if symptoms persist and you get weaker, you'd need to go to the doctor. Otherwise, once all the poisons in your body has been passed, you should feel better. Hope you feel better soon.

I had a similar thing for the last 24 hours but without vomiting. Just weakness, chills and a lot of running to the toilet. I don't take my temp when I'm sick so don't know if I had fever but I was sure chilled and I am still rather weak. I nibbled on some toast and honey and drank ginger ale today.

It's hard to decide what the worst part of these things is. I do recommend Imodium though to slow things down. The pain is excruciating at times but if you can nibble a little it gives those acids something to work on. It helps a bit.

Flu is an upper respiratory illness. There is no such thing as stomach flu. There are however viruses that can attack the intestines, Norovirus being one that has been around a lot lately. it is supposed to be responsible for up to 90% of attacks of gastroenteritis. Unfortunately unlike cold viruses you don't seem to get much immunity from Norovirus, thus the recurring episodes.

I only took my temp because of the severity of the headache and the explosive nature of the diarrhea. Just as I thought I was improving...last night was another sit up between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. to make the potty runs. Gah.

I called my MD this morning. I'm to try just boiled rice, bannanas, applesauce, boiled chicken, toast. If it's still not better by tomorrow I go to the hospital for a stool test. We shall see. The rice hasn't started any new 'action' so far. (Our Westie is happy; he gets to lick my rice plate before it goes into the dishwasher.)

I'm pretty sick of the bland food but a bit scared to enlarge the variety. I can't remember having anything with such a powerful onset, and sure don't want to go there again. I guess that since I AM much imporved, this isn't anything too 'interesting', and I should be fine if I gradually return to my normal diet.

I am going to make an appointment for a colonoscopy though! DH has one scheduled this Friday. Mine have been uneventful, but he has had benign polyps removed. Wish the prep was 'uneventful'.
