Help - DiamondBrite Midnight Blue...looks like Play-Doh

Our pool is being plastered as we speak, and after seeing several Midnight Blue Diamond Brite pools which we loved, my wife and I are freaking out. The plaster looks like blue play-doh.

Is there anyone with experience with this color that can put us at ease? Will it darken up once water goes in?

This is one of the few decisions I didn't really belabor and thought we were 100% on, but now I'm second guessing.

seeing trhoughts build on this forum makes me feel a lot better. His pool definitely looks much prettier than mine does right now.

Anyone else want to help calm my nerves!

The biggest fear right now is the concern that the blue glass tile on the spa is going to clash.

We are about to have our pool replastered and it's been reccomended by the plaster company to stay away from any Quartzscape plaster with dye any it like tahoe blue, midnight blue, etc. They said that if we didn't keep the Ph level right a film would build up and we would have to drain the pool and acid wash every couple of years. They suggested we go with the level one colors like blue, ivory, super blue, etc. Has anyone had problems like this? Has anyone used Aruba Sky? What is the difference between Diamond Brite and Quartzscapes? Any other information would be helpful. We were told that we would have to brush the pool for several weeks afterwards. What is with acid wash/bath after the initial plaster?

I was under the impression that Diamond Quartz was just the premixed product that the applicator mixes with Portland Cement to form Diamondbrite. We are going through the same process in Fort Worth, and have narrowed down to Diamondbrite or possibly Quartzscapes. Pebble Sheen and Pebble-Tec (and Stonescapes Mini-Pebble) were beautiful, but just a bit too rough for our little ones' feet (and swimsuits) in our opinion. Plaster is nice, but we'd like something a little sturdier after formerly owning a white plaster-finished pool. We ARE leaning toward Diamondbrite over Quartzscapes because of: 1) the premixing quality control issue you speak of; 2) the feel of the samples (Quartzscapes is a little rougher, though not bad); 3) our Pool Builder is ambivalent, but says his applicator has had good results with Diamondbrite and he is coming around on the product; 4) the color selection is more suited to what we're looking for (grey-green) than Quartzscapes - at least in the samples we got; 5) we've seen and felt Diamondbrite in a pool and the owner has nothing but positives to say about it; and 6) I've seen a few negative reviews here or at Trouble Free Pools (can't remember which) about problems with Quartzscapes blotching or not looking like the samples, which scares me even though I have a TON of confidence in our PB. Hope some of that helps. As for the light, from what I've read elsewhere, I'd guess 1 light should be enough to light a pool of that size, though it depends on what look you're going for. For instance, I expect some shadowy areas and attenuation at the edges of the pool at night, and even prefer it.

Where you live plays significantly into your choices. If you live in California or Hawaii, where power is expensive, the variable is the better option. In much of California, it often makes more sense to get a gas fired heater over a heat pump, especially when a spa is attached. There are for types of cleaners. There is the suction side cleaner, the pressure side cleaner, the robot, and the in-floor system. I think you are starting to see the value of having a PB. To build a pool on a DIY basis, you really need to know something about it. Scott

Diamond Brite vs Pebble Tec / Decking dilemma

Our previous pool had Pebble Tec (Tahoe Blue). It was nice. It was a good fit for the more natural look of the pool. After about 6-7 years, it was starting to show some bald spots. I didn't mind the rough feel, but the kids did end up with bloody feet on occasion. The one thing I always noticed was a bit of green in the color, so I felt the name was a bit misleading. In the new pool, with almost insistence by our PB, we went with Diamond Brite (Midnight Blue). After seeing it in another pool, I knew that was what we were going with. Once again, the name of the color is a bit misleading. It is far from "midnight" and really more of a sky blue. It looks amazing in full sun, and not too dark in the shade/dark. Having lived with it since March, I'm 100% satisfied with the choice. Despite the DB aggregate not being fully exposed yet, I love it. There are some splotchy areas, and the install was not done to my level of expectation, but we're still very happy. We plan to do an acid bath once the temps drop and hopefully that will even things out a bit. Only time will tell how the DB holds up, but I see little to no blue plaster when backwashing compared to the Pebble in the previous pool. It is much less rough than the Pebble tec and in our case, I feel it goes with the look we were trying to achieve. Midnight Blue Diamondbrite is a very unique color and I had a hard time finding many people who have gone with that choice. We get a LOT of compliments about the color of our pool and every day when I look at it, it makes me smile. I am a big fan of the color, but understand it may not be for everyone. Remember to brush twice a day for the first 7-10 days. No algaecide or chlorine for the first week. Then you can start adding chlorine slowly.Add acid as needed to lower the pH to 7.3 or so. It will rise on it's own for the next year. This tendency will slow as time progresses and the plaster cures. Watch the filter pressure too. The dust you brush off will get sucked into the filter and if not paid attention to, will clog it. Then daily for the next few weeks. No pool sweeps for the 1st 3 to 4 weeks. No Vacuuming either. You don't want track marks from the wheels.

Note: When brushing, turn off the skimmers so the drain pulls the dust. Brush towards the drain. Run the filter continuously. If you have an Intelliflow, try for 2 to 3 turns per 24.

Your plaster will cure nicely and smoothly. If I missed anything, I'm sure someone will chime in.

Thanks for the advice.

Currently they are getting ready to give it an acid wash. As the DB has started to cure a little and lose that glossy sheen it is looking much better. It is such a bright color, I'm just hoping that putting water in it calms it down a bit.

I also think once we get the decks enhanced and sealed, it will give us some more color. Add plants, new grass, furniture, etc. and we should be happy.

All of the midnight blue DB pools I've seen are "breathtaking" so I don't know why we panicked so much!

Hi there duderino,
I am one of those p/o lurkers always seeking what I can do better. I have been watching your build from the beginning.
I am sure that the blue glass tile will look just beautiful with the midnight plaster. I think as pool owners we have all been there with the panicky moment when the plaster is being done...
Have you looked at the midnight blue pools over on the gallery? That helped calm my nerves. We also wanted midnight blue but settled on medium grey plaster and LOVE IT!!! Also remember that it will keep changing colors for the next few weeks especially after start up and then chemicals.
And to repeat, brush, brush and brush again.... LOL!
