Backsplash to warm up white-ish cabs & granite
Comments (48)omg -- I am so embarrassed. I can't believe it's been almost three years. I know it's ridiculous, veevs, but I still have not put in a backsplash! I collected so many sample tiles (all of which are still sitting on my laundry room counter), and then I just got overwhelmed! And then tired. And then bored. And then we moved on to other major house projects (front entry, portico, landscaping, etc.) and other decorating (window treatments, etc.). And then I just became very zen about the whole thing and decided not to stress about it, to enjoy the paint for now, and to just pick out other kitchen things first (eg, got the bamboo shades budge suggested). In fact, it's funny that you're reviving this thread now, as I await delivery of the chandelier that I finally chose for over the island. I'm hoping that getting that up next week will provide a sudden epiphany re the backsplash. I hope to return to that project this fall/winter. Of course, I'm still happy to hear suggestions and welcome any photos! Sorry the thread was such a tease...but there will be a happy ending one day! In the meantime ... enjoy your kitchen and the many delicious meals you will share with your family ... and tell them all just to be zen :)...See MoreMy backsplash! Comments (15)Mybrowneyedgirls and ni_2006: The picture that ni_2006 posted looks more like how I thought mine would look (it's closer to the sample that I had). Mine is definitely green -- just more of a grayish green than a yellowish green. I know that my tile differs from the sample that I had because the tile installer accidentally put in the sample piece and took it right back out because he could tell the color was different. When I was on my Ming green kick, I was warned that I wouldn't know exactly what shade I'd get until the tiles came in: I didn't realize that there would be variation in ceramic colors too. As I said before, even though it's slightly different than what I thought I was getting, I still love it! mbeg: I bought the tile in a store south of Boston -- Bellew Tile in Rockland, MA. If you can't find a sample, I could send you one of my leftovers....See MoreBacksplash: Finding a White that matches counter and cabs.
Comments (3)I generally go for "looks good with" rather than "matches". Trying to match can be tricky because the light source isn't always the same and what is a perfect match in daylight could be an unpleasant "just missed matching" under artificial light. I think various whites that look good together also add a bit of depth. I have a really high level of color discernment whenever I take that test that gets posted on here occasionally, so I don't think it's that I can't tell the difference between shades, --apparently I see it but it doesn't bother me....See MoreWhite cabs, black counters & a backsplash other than white?
Comments (17)FYI, here are some of my inspiration photos. I love the red accents in this first one (my compliments to SoonerMagic--I hope it's OK that I'm re-posting this) but I'm just not sure if white subway tile might be too stark in our kitchen. Our cabs are white rather than off-white, there's no window above the sink and there won't be much painted wall showing. If we went with this color scheme we'd probably do something like BM Bennington Gray on the walls. Not certain if we'd use the contrasting grout or go with something whiter. I like how the beige-y backsplash in this 2nd photo adds a little more color to the room. Was thinking a subway tile in this shade might still work nicely with red accents (with paint in a similar beige shade): A third option would be to do a grayish paint (BM Gray Owl?) and go with a subway tile in carrara marble something like the one below (sorry--I'm not sure whose pic this is). The problem is I'm not sure that would coordinate well with the red in our dining room. It's also a cooler color scheme than I'd originally planned. Any thoughts? Our floors are hardwood, by the way--similar to the color in pic #2 or just a touch lighter. Thanks again for all the input!...See MoreOCJeff
