The Reid's Pool Build 2006-2007

It has been a long road, we started this project Oct. 2006. We've learned a great deal from the forum and our pool is not quite finished. They are plastering the Spa today. We went with a PB due to DH's schedule. It ended up using almost as much of our time as an owner/builder. We would not use a PB again.

Water is a bit green as we just finished filling yesterday, balancing starts today.

We will continue add more pictures as we finish up.

Congratulations!!

My favorite part of your pool is the placement of your mosaics. Keep posting pictures so we can see the fountain in your spa. We are close to completion of our pool also. I have been reading the forum here since last June and have made a lot of decisions based on the advice and mistakes I've found. We have water, but we are still finishing up a lot of the rock work on planters connected to the pool and spa. The most thrilling part was when the water clears and it really, really looks like a pool. Have fun!!

We updated the our photos with pictures of the Spa Plaster, the deck jets in action and the color lights. I'll shoot some more color light photos with a tripod later this week.

I used Milky Spore Disease and I have almost zero Japanese Beetles on my property, so no pesticides needed. Change to recycled toilet paper. There is one called 'Seventh Generation'. If your grocer does not carry it ask them to. Plant a bird thicket with native fruit bearing plants and mix in 1/3 evergreen for cover. Use a mulching mower and zero to little lawn products that are not organic. Gardens Alive sells organic products for the lawn and garden. They cost a bit more but consider it an investment in your planet. Flourescent light bulbs in your house and outdoor fixtures. Plant only plants that don't need coddling and use less water. Plant them well the first time and give them room so they are not sickly and naturally repel insects. Let insect, if they come, eat some of the plants. You will attract birds and amphibians if a well planted property that eat most, if not all, pests.

Thanks Everyone! I am always in awe at your gardens, so it is nice to hear your kind words about mine. Sadly, right now, my gardens are all in immediate threat of ruin. We have had non-stop rain for 2 weeks and the forecast is that we have at least another week of more rain in the forecast. Everything is standing in water and many of the plants in my 2 veggie gardens are starting to turn black and rot or are getting moldy. I went out in the rain to dig little trenches to try to drain off the pools of water in the growing areas. It helped, but the ground is terribly saturated and it is still pouring down. There is nowhere for the water to go. The Cimarron River north of here is above flood stage. It is lapping against the bottom of the bridge, and that is about 30+ feet above the normal water level! With more rain in the forecast, it seems pretty certain that the water will soon rise above the river banks and flood the low-lying areas on either side and potentially with all the flood debris will wash out the bridge and others. Wish someone could figure out how to pipe all this excess water to California and other areas of the country where it needed so much. The Low Pressure that has been hanging over our region of the country for weeks is supposed to soon move down into the SW and give you there all the rain that you need and let us dry out (and probably COOK). The sun came out for 30 minutes two days ago and I was able to get out in the yard to take a few more pictures of flowers and the upper Potager. We are supposed to get up to 8 more inches of rain here in Oklahoma in the next 24 hours. I am going to drive over to the Cimarron tomorrow and take pictures of the flooding river. ~ Annie

marciab10, we just got back our 2nd round of comments this afternoon, all from the Building Dept. (Engineering? PASSED! Planning? PASSED!) There are 26 comments to address and unfortunately, a lot of those comments are simple things that were overlooked due to the fact that our designer does not seem to be very detail-oriented and he did not properly address them the first time. I'm going to vent a little here and just say that he better not take 4 WEEKS to get these comments addressed like he just did this last time...or else...well, I don't want to go there yet. ANYWAY, on to happy thoughts...happykate, thank you and just looking at your view again somehow seemed to calm me instantly! :) sandyponder, I love your window color! They look very similar to the one I picked out called "ICI Brown" by Sierra Pacific Windows. I think ours will have more of a brown tone, but they look a lot alike otherwise. nhkate, I can almost smell the nature just by looking at your wonderful view! Thanks for posting those photos and I can totally understand how they really don't the "real thing" justice...but I enjoyed them anyway!

"Bad time to have a less than desirable house in a less than prime location..." Or even a nice house in a less than prime location! We've had two offers but one of them turned out to be pretty much a joke, and the other has a sales contingency with absolutely no sign of their house selling anytime soon. Up until that offer put a contingency tag on our listing and after we started mandating drive-bys before making appointments, we had pretty good traffic through the house, but it's dropped off drastically to maybe one a week instead of six or seven a week, sometimes two or three a day. What's a "5-4-doors"? A lot of what's in our (low) price range is split level; I think they're very unattractive so I would only consider it as a last resort. It would have to be a VERY good neighborhood! "Yup, I must agree about sellers being in denial & keep listing higher than 2005, rather than lower." We're priced at almost $50,000 less than our house was appraised for by an independent appraiser in 2005. Ouch. (Thank goodness we didn't take the full cash-out when we refinanced, like the bank was pressuring us to.) But, there's a repo across the road dragging us down; it has "issues" and is even closer to the highway than we are, but it is larger by 500sf, has one more bathroom than ours, and is $14k less. We simply can't afford to drop our price commensurately. And yeah, the keeping-the-house-perfect is a real drag... we went out yesterday and I said to hell with it, left the bed unmade and dishes in the sink. I just didn't care anymore right then. I have to go get vacuum cleaner bags today, we've gone through an entire package of them since Memorial Day!

Beautiful pool! I love the mosaics and the deck jets.

I have a question about your cage. It looks like there's all kind of braces on it. Ours was built last year, and is very different. What kind of specifications did they use? It's also much larger than ours. Maybe that's it???

Thanks for the comments! We owe a bunch of the ideas to the members of this forum!

The Brick structure you see was built by the original owner. He was a brick mason and fairly talented. He also did all the ornamental brick on the front of our home, we have a giant archway entry, herringbone under the windows and on the front of the house chimney. He designed it to be a small built-in bbq. He cobbled together some very odd grill parts and connected it to the house propane lines. The steel burner assembly has since rusted and was red tagged by the gas company prior to our purchase of the home. We are going to replace the burner assembly with a stainless fire ring and turn it into a small outdoor fireplace. Our bbq is part of the outdoor kitchen under the cover section of the patio.

The cage is one of the largest in our county. Due to size the structure required site specific engineering - which basically means the screen company was not allowed to use any of the "stock" or "book" construction methods. Everything down to the thickness of the material and fastner spacings are called out on the engineered drawings. The cage is designed to withstand 140 MPH wind loads. The extra bracing in the Mansard section of the roof is to resist "racking" during high windloads. Racking when the roof of a structure begins to twist relative to the base. There are other "heavy duty" features required for this load condition - post back if you're interested in the details, DH is an Electrical Engineer and loves to discuss the details!

We are moving into our outdoor entertainment room this weekend so we'll post some more pictures by Monday.

Your pool is beautiful. I'm considering one with similar deck space, pool size and screen size and know that this will add a considerable amount to the costs. If you don't mind me asking, what was the total cost of the project for the pool/spa, deck and screen (excluding landscaping etc.).
