Comments (9)When I adopt a shelter animal, and lord knows I have done that often enough, the fees I pay are based on the fact that the animals medical needs have been factored in. That's why an alley cat can cost two hundred dollars. Even the private groups who work mostly with foster homes have fees reflecting vet care. If that weren't the case, a foster care giver is opening themselves up for a tremendous financial liability. If they can't meet it, then the animal is not having its needs met and the shelter is not doing its job. I considered fostering, and have looked into it. The food and supplies I'd have no problems donating, but not the medical care! Call that shelter up and let them do what they are supposed to be doing or report them. Even if foster families are doing the best they can, if they can't meet the medical needs of an animal it's the shelter's fault for placing them there. It's not your fault. Good luck and keep in touch. This kitten could have anything wrong with it including coccidia and that could be life-threatening without treatment and also infect your healthy animals....See Morekitten megacolon vs. small anus any experience?
Comments (4)I have read a report that Manx cats may do better with a different procedure called a pelvic osteotomy to enlarge the pelvic outlet. Many times, the size of the hole in the pelvic girdle through which the stool passes is too small in the Manx because of their lack of tail issues. I think the pelvic osteotomy can be done either alone or in conjunction with the subtotal colectomy. I can't find the report anywhere right now though:( Also, medical management is always preferred over surgery when possible. There are 4 things that help- increased water consumption (canned diet is very helpful), low residue diet, lactulose and cisipride. Any time they become obstipated, it is important to have them immediately cleaned out. Many cats, even Manx, can be managed long term this way. As far as keeping the kitten from eating the other cats' food, I think that if you switch the kitten to a canned diet, it will help. He will most likely eat all of his canned food immediately and then be too full to nibble the others' dry food. Also, why eat dry if you are lucky enough to be getting canned? BTW, I think canned food is better for ALL cats anyway... Good luck with your kitties....See Moremy kitten has FIP
Comments (44)Thank you everyone for your kind words and prayers. It has been not quite two full days after saying goodbye to Henry and it is still hard to not imagine him being in his favorite spot when I go in a certain room or find him following me. It has been such a hard emotional month dealing with all this; I miss him terribly even though there is a relief that I don't have to worry about him anymore. It was hard to put away his bedding and I have yet to clean his food dish with his latest meal still in the fridge, but I know it will probably take me a few more days before I am able to think of him without such saddness. I am just still so bitter and in shock that something like this can be so devastating. I wish I could do something to help fund research to find a cure or a medicine that would allow cats to live with this disease. Does anyone out there know if there is a place that is working on an FIP cure/vaccine? I would be interested to know. Soemone said it earlier, that this is just such an evil disease, and I figured out that it is because there is no hope that one can hang onto........you feel so helpless........as his "mom" that was just so hard for me to deal with, and of course the not knowing when and how long he would stay with me until the time came to relieve him of his suffering. I found comfort in reading all your words, so thank you again for supporting me through this hard time. Wow, it hasn't even been a month........i think back to a few weeks ago, I have a picture of him in my washing machine where he was exploring one day and I had to snap a picture, that was Henry.......just a sweet little kitten snooping around my space while I was close by. He always had a way of looking right at me with his eyes, almost like he was trying to tell me something.......and I have to believe it was love, and that's why losing him has been so hard, he was one of those kitties who really, really loved you(me). I hope that if anyone else is going through this with their kitty they can find some help and support through this forum, I didn't know who I could talk to and this really helped fill a void. So onto the healing and again, just love love love your animals, in sickness and in health, because once they're gone you can't go back and have more time with them, and at least you can hold onto the fact that you gave them all the time, attention and love that you had. Again, peace and thanks for your prayers, D....See MoreKitten sneezing blood
Comments (3)Thank you for your responses. I appreciate any help given. He has been his normal self so far, nothing out of the ordinary, and I haven't seen any more blood. I have been checking his temp. daily and so far so good. I have a date for him with a local Amish horse caretaker (friend o' the fam). Should be a good thing especially until his insurance goes into effect and a modernized physician can treat him( Nothing against my good friends living the simple life) with all the toys. Thanks again....See Morerunsnwalken
