First off, to eliminate the thickness prob quickly, nail some hang-down trims, painted the same color as the cabs.

U can get a warm-white effect if u combine white and yellow LEDs in the correct proportion. But keep reading...

I just saw of these lighting at BigLot! didn't actually see how much but I'd bet lots less than Home Depot. Try to get the one with the starter-less transformer. I have both, and the one with starter always require a replacement after a while. The starter-less been going for years requiring no maintenance.

I bought the Pegasus UCL xenon strips. They are 15/16ths of an inch deep- the shallowest I found without going to uber $$$ or LED. They were VERY reasonably priced. I had them installed a few weeks ago, and I LOVE them. They have a hi-low toggle, but we had them hardwired to a single dimmer switch. I couldn't be happier.

Someone on the forum recommended them. Can't remember who.

There are warm white LEDs available. The cost of LEDs is expected to become sharply lower.

Thanks for the responses. Amberley, do your xenons get hot? I looked at them today in Lowe's and was taken aback by how hot they were. I know my kids would burn their hands. Do they come in a lower temperature option?

They do get hot, but not nearly as hot as halogen. I am not sure why your kids would be putting their hands on them though. I have a 5 and a 7 year old, and they have no interest in them. They do not make the counter hot. The bottom of the cabinet is warm, but nothing terrible. I thought they were a good solution- both cost wise, and light temperature (color) wise.

Never mind about BigLots! I just saw them again and they are missing the diffuser cover.

When I did mine, I immediately stayed away from standard bulbs precisely due to unwanted heat and because fluorescent should give me even lighting wo much fussing. I use 8 watts warm whites and the only complaint I have is that they are a tad too bright for my white walls. Ur mileage may vary.

I use "thin inch" fluorescent T5 fixtures, which worked great. I used G.E. ones that I found at Home Depot, but here's a link to some from Pegasus Lighting.

We also used the G.E. fluorescent lights from HD. They came in 3 different color ranges---all with different names which I think were something like daylight, warm yellow light, and something else. In any event, we bought one of each to try out for how they reflected off our cabinets and counters and then bought everything we needed in the one we liked (can't remember which it was anymore). Our light rails are 1" and the lights are thin enough that they can't be seen at all. We decided against xenon after having them in a rental condo. Chocolate chips in a cabinet above the lights melted into a total puddle in about 30 minutes when the lights were on. Quite a shocker when I had promised to bake cookies for the Super Bowl party and had to deal with a soupy mess and running to the store for another package at the last minute. So yes, IMHO, xenon gets quite hot as does the halogen. KD also recommended the fluorescent and had the direct wire connections designed into the layout so we just use the wall switch when we need them. Overall, I'm quite happy with these lights---not hi-tech but user friendly and not expensive either. HTH.

I've installed xenon from Pegasus, Juno and Haffle and recommend these.
I've also installed fixtures from HD and LOWE'S.

Under cabinet lighting are installed either at the rear, center or front.
Each reflects differently and also have different illumination field.
Even with a molding across the front bottom cabinet rail,the fiztures, mounted to the rear, can be seen from a diningroom chair.
Flouresants and dimmable multi lamp xenon mounted just behind the front rail gives uniform counter illumination at all levels of dimming.

When the fixtures are hard wired they are mounted under the bottom shelf even 120v pucks, unless they are to be recessed.
When the fixtures are recessed the cabinet maker provides a false bottom to obscure the wiring.

Yes, you can find T4 & T5 undercabinet fluorescent lights thinner than 1''. 7/8'' is about the best you'll find, though.

LED's come much thinner--some at only 5/16''. I don't have any experience w/ LED's so don't know how useful they would be for task lighting??

Kichler linear lighting (clip-on lampholders/bulbholders w/tracks and wiring) are very low-profile and give nice, even lighting. You can get white or black holders, tracks, wiring, clips, etc--your choice. Make sure they give you the "new" style lampholders; they clip onto the track much more securely, so each bulb lights up when you turn them on (no more jiggling them to get them to light!).

WAC XENON LIGHT BARS - WWW.WACLIGHTING.COM I used BA LIX 4 - very low profile, 1" - hi low switch. They do get warm, but not excessively so. Mine are pulled forward to the edge of the cab or shelf and are hidden by the 1" face of the cab or shelf. You cannnot see them unless you are on the far side of the room sitting down and looking back up at them.

Thanks everyone. I liked what I saw on the Pegasus site for the T5 Thin Inch Fluorescents. I also saw on the site that you can get T5 replacement bulbs in several "colors" - cool white, warm white, daylight, etc. I appreciate all the responses!
