gonna make banana pudding and a ????

DS and Gs are coming Sunday, and both love my banana pudding.

BUT it has been years since I made it. I use my former MIL recipe that the pudding is made from scratch.

1. If I make it Saturday, for Sunday dessert, won't the bananas turn brown and the vanilla wafers get soggy?

I'm so out of the loop as I don't cook that often anymore.

1 (15 ounce) box Hostess Twinkies
1 (5 ounce) package banana instant pudding
1 1/2 cups milk
2 -3 bananas (sliced)
1 (2 5/8 ounce) box dream whip whipped dessert topping mix (has 2 envelopes of topping 1.3 ounce each)
Change Measurements: US : Metric

Directions:
Prep Time: 15 mins

Total Time: 15 mins
1 Split Twinkies lengthwise and lay in 9x13 pan (should use whole box).
2 Prepare instant pudding with 1 1/2 cups milk.
3 Lay sliced bananas over Twinkies in pan and pour pudding over bananas.
4 Prepare 2 envelopes of Dream Whip as per package directions and spread this over the top of pudding.
5 Chill in refrigerator until set (about an hour or longer).

The Twinkie recipe sounds way too sweet, at least for my tastes. Twinkies alone are sticky sweet. What about using ladyfingers?

You can't beat the recipe on back of the vanilla wafer box. I've had this one, and it is excellent Not Yo' Mama's Banana Pudding Recipe courtesy Paula Deen 2 bags Pepperidge Farm Chessmen cookies (You can use vanilla wafer, instead) 6 to 8 bananas, sliced 2 cups milk 1 (5-ounce) box instant French vanilla pudding 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping thawed, or equal amount sweetened whipped cream Line the bottom of a 13 by 9 by 2-inch dish with 1 bag of cookies and layer bananas on top. In a bowl, combine the milk and pudding mix and blend well using a handheld electric mixer. Using another bowl, combine the cream cheese and condensed milk together and mix until smooth. Fold the whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture. Add the cream cheese mixture to the pudding mixture and stir until well blended. Pour the mixture over the cookies and bananas and cover with the remaining cookies. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

here is the recipe I use at work. 2 cups milk 1/3 cup sugar 1/4 cup cornstarch 4 egg yolks sprinkle of salt Mix all the ingredients together in a microwave safe bowl. I use a 2 quart pyrex glass bowl. Microwave for 2 minutes and stir. Repeat this 2 or 3 more times. It depends upon your microwave as how long it will take. We only have a small one at work. I dont know the wattage. Peel and slice your bananas into 7up or orange juice to prevent them from turning black to fast. Let set for a couple of minutes and drain real well and add to pudding mixture. Put into a baked pie shell or a graham cracker crust. Top with meringue made with the remaining 4 egg whites and bake at 400 degrees for 13 minutes or until desired color. Or you can skip the meringue and use whip cream on top. The salt may be omitted, all it is for is that it takes the really sweet taste out of it and makes it taste much better. THIS SAME RECIPE MAY BE USED FOR COCONUT CREAM PIE.THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT YOU OMIT THE BANANAS AND ADD A 1/3 CUP OR MORE OF TOASTED COCONUT. IF YOU TOAST THE COCONUT IT GIVES IT A STRONGER FLAVOR. I USE THE MICROWAVE TO TOAST IT. PUT IT ON A PLATE AND MICROWAVE IT UNTIL IT IS CRISP AND BROWNED. BE SURE TO CHECK IT EVERY FEW SECONDS AND STIR IT WHEN YOU CHECK IT OR IT WILL BURN IN ONE SPOT AND NOT BROWN IN THE OTHER SPOTS. THIS IS REALLY EASY. If anyone has any questions or would like a similar recipe for butterscotch pudding please let me know. In fact I was thinking with Marilyn Sues recipe which sounds really good I think my butterscotch recipe might work.

The Rose Levy Birnbaum banana cake posted here by jgarner a couple of years ago. I don't even like bananas and I like that cake, I make cupcakes and don't bother to frost them, I just call them "muffins" instead. You could also make a smoothie or two, if you care for smoothies. I don't, but lots of people do. I don't know if it's the same as Deanna's, but I have this recipe for freezer jam, it's from Kraft-Canada. No-Cook Strawberry Banana-Split 2 cups crushed strawberries 1 cup mashed bananas, about 3 ( fully ripe) 3 cups sugar 3/4 cup water 1 (85 g) boxes Certo, pectin crystals Mix fruit and sugar until well blended. Let stand 10 minutes. Bring water and pectin to boil in saucepan; boil 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add to fruit mixture; stir 3 minutes. Pour into clean jars or plastic containers. Cover with tight fitting lids. Let stand at room temperature until set. (This could take up to 24 hours). Store in freezer, or if jam will be used in 3 weeks, store in refrigerator. TIPS: Add 1/3 cup chocolate liqueur to jam mixture before pouring into jars. SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Warm jam, then use as a toppng for hot waffles, ice cream sundaes, or banana splits. For a quick and easy milk shake, add a spoonful jam to vanilla ice cream in a blender container. Add milk, then blend until thickened and smooth. Tom--I have made this banana pudding recipe for many years, and my DH thinks it is the best. Very simple; serves 6. Came from the Cotton Country Cookbook published by the Decatur, AL, Junior Service League. BANANA PUDDING 1/2 cup sugar 2 TBS. flour Dash of salt 1 3/4 cups milk 1 egg 1 tsp. vanilla 2 TBS. butter Graham crackers OR vanilla wafers 2 bananas Mix sugar, flour, and salt in top of double boiler. Measure milk and add enough milk to moisten the sugar, flour and salt mixture. With whisk, beat in egg. Turn heat to medium high, adding the rest of milk gradually. Stir constantly with spatula or wooden spoon. Cook until sauce thickens and boils. Take off stove. Add vanilla and butter. Put lid on boiler while butter melts. In a deep casserole dish, put one layer of graham crackers OR vanilla wafers and one layer of sliced bananas. After the butter has melted, stir custard carefully, and spoon the custard (does not need to cool) over the sliced bananas. Make two more layers like the first. Top the pudding with a layer of graham crackers or vanilla wafers. Chill. May add meringue if desired. Makes 6 servings. (COOK'S NOTE: I never use margarine instead of butter, and I always use vanilla wafers. If you're careful and have a nice heavy saucepan, you can get by without using a double boiler. Just stir constantly until custard comes to a boil. I use a 1-qt or a 1 1/2-qt. casserole, and I never have but two layers. Sometimes, I will crumble a few wafers over the top. You can substitute an 8 ounce can of crushed pineapple, drained, (sweetened or in its own juice) for the bananas and have a great pineapple pudding.)

The bananas will get a little brown and the wafers will get soggy, but it will STILL BE DELICIOUS!

I've made it the day before and it's fine. I don't put bananas on the top though. I just slice them and put them in the pudding and mix. The Nilla wafers will get a little soft, but I like them that way.

That twinkie dessert is going straight to my dessert file. I'd also like it with macerated strawberries over the top and covered with instant cheesecake pudding. Lots of variations with that recipe. I LOVE twinkies!! :-)

What else are you having?

Yes the cookies will get soft. I wouldn't pass up a banana pudding with or without soft cookies. My worry would be the bananas turning dark. It really should be made the day you eat it.

To keep my bananas from browning, I dip banana slices in lemon juice before adding them to the recipe.

Could you make the pudding on Saturday, then do the assembling on Sunday?

Well, no probem! Lunch isn't going to happen.

I have made it the day before, long time ago when I actually did a lot of family cooking.

Lost my confidence, so I decided to make strawberry cobbler, but now I don't have that to make either.
