I think I may be a big freaking freak
Comments (18)I used to be able to write well, too, before Internet forums entered my life. Formal, proper writing sounds stuffy and very unlike me. I wind up inserting loads of dashes and parenthesis, semi-colons and commas, and my sentences ramble in the same way my mind does. (Better than an incomplete sentence, indeed. lol!) Spelling- ugh! My Dad (who was a very good speller) used to say that since I read a fair amount, spelling should come easily, as if I looked at each letter as I read. I don't think so. I suppose he had the same sort of ability to visualize the words after as you do, Karen. I have a knack for visualizing other things, but not written words. I could easily picture my living room painted green, with the front wall pushed out 10 feet and the ceiling vaulted. (It's not that I'm hankering for a green living room; I just wouldn't have any trouble visualizing it.) I never have to bring samples home to see whether they match what I've got. I can remember and visualize the colors. It's not so with words. For me, learning to spell requires a lot of boring repetition. Is crepehanger an unusual word? It's one my parents used (not a lot, but when appropriate) from the time I was little. The rest were new to me. I can only hope my family will offer me encomium on my burgoo someday. The word sciolism offers some delightful possibilities. It seems one would exhibit it merely by using it. That could leave others wondering whether the speaker/writer was indeed being sciolistic or merely offering up some mildly self-depreciating humor. I've said it before-- my pet misusage peeve is snuck. There's a perfectly good regular past tense- sneaked. Why make things more difficult? I suppose it's useful for writers of dirty limericks, but it grates on me. (My dirty limericks are much less obvious! They use words like "sciolism".) Using "impacted" as a verb bothers me too. I think it brings up negative associations with wisdom tooth surgeries. The word "affected" works just fine, so why "impacted"? (I have been guilty of using "access" as a verb on occasion, but only in computer terms.) Some of the conglomerate words for "big" sound downright goofy. Humongous was bad enough; ginormous is just dumb. How about irregardless and disorientated? (ooo, fragment alert!) Anticlimatic is funny! I love that! I get a kick out of it when people describe themselves as nauseous, too. Words are fun!...See MoreBefore I start cutting fabric...
Comments (37)I took my damask napkin and a scrap of fabric, sewed the clothesline into the scrap like it was the boxing. The messy stitching at the top of the pic is from backstitching when I inserted the cord - the "right" side was the bobbin side and it's not pretty. Laid the damask down right side up, placed the "boxing" with the cord to the left , matched seam allowances, put the "right" (outside) of the scrap (boxing to the right of the damask edge. I put the zipper foot on the left, put the foot right on top of the cord and slowly sewed right along the cord. The stitching still shows on the boxing, but this got it close (bobbin side) to the seat. Then, just for giggles, after taking these pics, I went back and folded the free edge of the "boxing" over the cord again and stitched as close as I could, forming a fold on the underside (the part that will be inside the cushion). This hides the (double) row of stitching on the edge of the welting, but may catch dirt. Probably would look really nice pressed, but would be a bear to do on the second edge since by then the seat panels top and bottom would be attached and I'd be folding the entire (let's say bottom seat panel is the last to be sewn on, then I'd have to fold the top) seat cushion and boxing over to fold it. Maybe I would do this just on the top, and either do no welting, or let stitches show, on the bottom of the boxing? Only place anyone would see those stitches would be bottom edge of front gusset. What do you think?...See MoreTip: fabric storage, cutting table

Comments (42)Thanks Patty Cakes, Luckily, I have the rugs--finally--because I've been looking for ages. (That must have been twenty or thirty posts on this board.) And the walls are taken care of, too. I've also figured out the color scheme and color flow which had to be changed slightly when, after months of looking, I realized that my favored sky blue and chocolate brown just wasn't available in rugs. (I will use those colors in the master bedroom.) And--my prized possession--I have two or three bags of different fabric samples including the one bag of the main fabrics. Hopefully they're all still available. I've got most of the floor plans set in my mind, with some questions about size and scale. The difficult part is now finding the furniture at the right price and with the right fabric. Oh, and all the window treatments. I am concerned that designers will limit my purchases to the local design center, and that it will be more than I want to spend. DH, of course, just wants me to get it done. And he wants window treatments desperately. But I refuse to buy those before I know what the whole room will look like. I appreciate your tip. I think it's going to take quite a while before we have things on the walls but I'll remember to balance it. Thanks again....See Moresweeby
