Question about spray decking products

Can anyone give me information on the durability, appearance, etc. of spray decking products. I know they're marketed under different names. In my area (DC metro), it is called Sundek. I am considering it for my pool surround, but it is expensive and I'd like to get some opinions first.

A lot depends on the base concrete. prep work, environmental variables and surrounding environment. It may last 10 years, it may last 2 years.

There are lots of brands, colors and styles.

My favorite deck is still a 4-6' brushed concrete.

It is a durable surface as long as it is applied properly and you stay away from water based sealers when you select the color that is typically rolled on after the deck has been sprayed. On new concrete applications, the concrete must cure before the spray deck is applied. On existing concrete surfaces, proper prep and in some instances, a skim coat is required for the best results to ensure the spray deck looks like new. Solvent based sealers are the best. A company called Increte is one I would take a look at. Take care.

I had nothing but a sore back for my efforts spraying for Western Flower Thrips. The big problem for someone with a lot of roses is the life cycle. Quoting from University of Minnesota, emphasis added: "Depending on environmental conditions and nutrient levels, female WFT lay 130Â230 eggs during their lifetime (Robb 1989). The female WFT has an external ovipositor with two opposable serrated blades that are used to cut through the plant epidermis and deposit eggs in the tissues below (Childers and Achor 1995). Eggs are deposited in leaves, bracts, and petals and hatch in 2 to 4 days (Pfleger et al. 1995). The eggs of WFT are fairly well protected and few pesticide sprays are effective against them. "WFT do not overwinter outdoors in the Upper Midwest but overwinter in soil and clover in the Mid-Atlantic states and southern Pennsylvania (Felland et al. 1995). Under greenhouse conditions, WFT probably reproduce continuously throughout the year. "WFT give birth to large numbers of young, have rapid reproductive cycles, and increase their population faster than their predators, so early detection and control is essential (Mound and Teulon 1995). The life cycle of WFT consists of five stages: egg, two feeding larval instars, nonfeeding prepupa and pupa instars, and adult (Figure 1). The development time from egg to adult is 7 to 13 days when temperatures range from 62 to 98F (Robb 1989)." Spinosad works upon contact or feeding on sprayed material. Given the extent of thrips in some environments (like mine), it's can be really tough to get the material on the bugs. I've learned that white roses grown close to the wilder areas of my garden are going to suffer, while darker roses in the same location, filled with thrips, look just fine. 'now I judt have to fimd the best application to fight the cercospora' Synthetic fungicides containing any drastic ingredient in the class of stobilurins (e.g. pyraxostrobin, azoxystrobin, trifloxystrobin etc), don't let Henry know I told you about it, or copper based fungicides if you want to be somewhat more 'ecological' and a quite bit safer yourself. Can't help you with specific brands since I'm not resident in the US but over here Cabrio, Switch and Flint would fall in the first category (the same would fight botrytis blight also). Best method (regardless of health concerns and the like) would be to alternate between strobilurins and copper. Disclaimer: A bit of fungal disease should be acceptable to anybody growing roses in his/her garden in my view. So use sparingly.

Rekha, I am sorry that you are still having issues with your roses. i used Conserve but i was told not to use one single spray program. You might want to think about adding Bayer Complete Insect Killer to your program as well. With normal thrips, one usually sprays when you see a problem. But with Chilli Thrips, you need to be more proactive as they can kill the entire plant. I add one or the other of two insecticides to my regular fungicide spray mixture at least every 2 weeks and sometimes weekly depending on the level of activity i see. I spray proactively for this pest. Now for the spotted leaves. about the fungus you are going to have a problem with this time of the year is black spot . You can usually control that well with a combination of fungicides. I am using tebuconazole which is in the BioAdvanced product. I would add mancozeb to the mix. Spray regularly with propiconazole [ similar to tebuconzole ] plus the mancozeb and that works well. so far i have used one but have not mix or change the spray program. There is another type of possibility if you think it is Black spot but it is another called Xanthomonas infection [ a bacteria and not a fungus]. People usually suspect that when [2] chemical combination for black spot does not work. For this problem you need to spray regularly with copper based product called CuPro is mostly used. the best thing to do is to go to a rose society and bring samples of the leaves and show it to a Consulting Rosarian or you can asked them who is a master Rosarian. You get more information better bec i have to do above and i got all the information. I have one rose bush that is highly infected with Thrips and fungal but not BS. I almost lost it but it turn around and i keep cutting off buds and i got lucky bec it is in a pot so i basically isolated it completely so my other roses will not get infected . it is the only rose i spray now. since it got cooler it is looking better. Sometimes i wonder if i need to strip it naked and have all new leaves growing ? jin

You can grow gorgeous tropical hibiscus in Houston too......mine go in the greenhouse in winter but do fine. The humidity is a killer, almost unbearable in summer, bad where I live too - I sweat to death in summer. We do get winter which I love except for "pipe busting" weather, under 25 degrees. I have horses, so constantly have to worry about busted pipes. I grow alot of bands - enjoy seeing them become big roses - so have lots in pots that I baby [I dont count anymore!] I really got off schedule with everything this year and find myself with this blackspot situation, winter coming, and have not dealt with this problem before. I prune my roses back pretty hard in February because they come out and grow so much in spring, so would normally get rid of most of blackspotted leaves, put refuse in burn pile, spray plants and the ground and move on. But, it is really bothering me to see these diseased leaves. I dont have a fancy sprayer - dont laugh, but I mix up solution in a couple of gallon jugs and pour into a hand sprayer. Put the jugs on my golf cart and go around to the different beds and spray each rose really well. I am in process of organizing my pot ghetto - got my carpenter to do this stairstep shelf in my pot ghetto made of stair "stringers" and long wide boards he gave to me and put outdoor carpet I cut in strips for the pots to sit on. This will be really helpful to care for the smaller pots, easy to water and spray. I bought one of those smaller pump up mist sprayers, havent used one in a long time but going to try it out today. I have beds in quite a few different places, so dragging a bigger sprayer around doesnt work for me. Maybe one day I will find a bigger sprayer that would work........not sure pumping that mist sprayer all the time will be much fun - rather just do the hand sprayer I think. An acrylic knockdown finish is very pretty and comes in many colors.

In my area it's affordable, I sell it for $3.00 per sq/ft on top of new concrete.

I'm curious, how much does it sell for up in your neck of the woods?

Ha ha! Well, welcome to the rip-off off the DC area. Sundek is $16 per sq. ft. here. As I look at all these beautiful pools on this site, I am amazed at how comparatively inexpensive they are. (I know many are in the South.) I have seen some amazing pools with all the upgrades for $40-45k. You can't even start a pool around here for under $50k. I guess that's the price you pay for living in a metropolitan area. Once the snow melts, our project will begin and I'll post the progress. Thanks for your input!

There are upgrades to the knock-down, acrylic and cement mixes such as pigments added to the cement mix so the color goes all of the way through the material instead of just 'being on top'.
Pricing can also be changed depending on the type of sealer that is used on the knock down finish.
A solvent based sealer is one of the least expensive but if it is an acrylic, it will need to be resealed often.
A two part water based polyurethane is more expensive but will last ten times longer than a water/solvent based acrylic.
I agree with the others, the cement/acrylic mix is very basic... the longevity of the product depends highly on the prep and installation...
