Help Name A Photography Co........

Kalie is planning on starting a Co. within the next year or so. She will be doing family settings/kids pics mostly...for the immediate time anyway. She can't come up with a name that she likes. She doesn't want to use her name at all (too unusual, she doesn't think people will know how to spell it), or town..they will be moving from where they are later, she wants something more generaric...like Fenceline Photos...something like that. Mike will make her website, and she wants to get a name to put on it.

Any ideas would be great! THANKS!!!

Ok y'all! So the Photography presentation last Firday night went fine. I had fun doing it. I would say there were only about a dozen ladies there but all seemed to enjoy themselves. After I did my presentation I scrolled through all my 214 (yes, I know--a Lot of photos) and talked just about every one! I'm long winded. BUT, I was in my MOMENT. As I went though I shared with them about the rocks I name. There were a couple that I hadn't officially named and they helped me with another name for one....Penguin Rock. To me it looks like a podium-they showed me a penguin. :-) I think they had fun thinking about it. IT was kind of like we were all laying on the grass looking up to the sky to see what formations the clouds were making! My whole intent was to get people to see the greater beauty and peace in nature all around us--even the small things! It's so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. I knew I did that for at least two of the ladies there. OK, so the Fair Photos. I went last Sunday there to the Fair. Out of the 9 I entered 1 won 3rd place. The one that won was my poppy photo. It was interesting as I viewed all the photos. A lot were good especially the ones that won. But then sometimes I couldn't figure out what the judges were looking for. I know they want a photo to "pop" and the poppies did in color. They have volunteers there who watch the building and make sure the photos are monitored. I spoke with one of the gals there and it just happened to be Kay Hendrickson, one of our local photographer/artists. She is known for her poppy photos. I think she said they received about 1800 photos this year. So, anyways, just want to say Thank You to all for your encouragement and specific comments. Welcome to Colorado!!!! I second the Colo Spgs Utils Xeriscape Garden - it's wonderful!!! Also, Harding Nursery is good as already stated, but Paulino's Nursery up in Denver is WELL worth the drive. That place is absolutely amazing. as far as books, there is the "Xeriscape Plant Guide" and several others by the same folks. Lauren Springer's books are good as far as information but can be tough to read...in her first book, her writing skills weren't yet perfected ;) Her second one with Rob Proctor is also good and more readable. I live on the north/east end of town, up by Monument. I'm growing: blue grama/sideoats grama grasses in a "pseudo-prairie", many many varieties of penstemon, many varieties of very tough roses (no Hybrid Teas though - not tough enough to thrive here), rabbitbrush, big sagebrush (Artemesia tridentata), New Mexico Privet, Apache Plume, a couple of peonies and clematis in near the house, Agastaches (a wonderful flower), Maximillian Sunflower, several types of yarrow, iris and daylilies (surprisingly xeric), gaillardias, ornamental grasses, and a heckuva lot more. I grow veges in a "hoophouse" (small greenhouse) and tomatoes in clear "tents"...protects from weather and cool nights. My biggest challenges here are not the dry conditions or cold winter, it's the clay soil (actually a benefit because it holds water) and HAIL!!! Holy Cow, this area can have some whopper hailstorms! I've learned that plants with fern-type leaves or narrow, flexible foliage do very well, while stuff like hostas get absolutely shredded. Maximillian's Sunflower, Agastache, Artemesias, and penstemons survived 19 hailstorms at my home last summer unscathed, and we had a couple of absolute whopper storms. Roses did surprisingly well too. Gaillardia got pummeled but bounced back very quickly. good luck with your new home and garden!!! Enjoy!! Nancy

Depending from where to where you are flying your dog, happy2beme, you may or may not need a pet shipping company. If it's a straight-forward flight but you will not be accompanying your dog, but can arrange to get him to the airport and have him reliably met at the other end, you might try to find a passenger on a suitable flight who can take him as if he were their dog, as excess baggage rather than cargo. Works out cheaper and makes for less crated waiting / hanging around time for the dog. I have flown many dogs many places, both nationally and internationally. It is very nerve-wracking ... for the human! The dogs do just fine! A few tips if not using a shipping company: - check and check again with the airline re min and max temps for flying an animal. - book as far ahead as possible and check and check again. Some short-haul planes can only carry X number of animals as excess baggage or cargo due to oxygen-ventilation issues (they calculate the flying time and the weight of your dog and how much oxygen they will require etc. First time I was faced with that I about had a fit but it all worked out okay. I had 3 big dogs on one flight, one in one baggage compartment, two in another, and a cat on an entirely different plane, all going to the same place). - make sure your crate is the right size for your dog. Airlines can and will refuse to fly your dog if the crate is too big or too small. If you're not sure, take your dog and crate to the airport days ahead of time and have them "tested". This gives you time to get a bigger or smaller crate if necessary. - put water in the crate water dish ahead of time and freeze it. Much better than having water sloshing out and gone before your dog even gets on the plane. - write a note to tape on the top of the crate - something like "Hi, my name is Kane. I'm moving to Kansas with my family. I'm a really nice boy but I might be a bit out of sorts with all this travel", or something relevant for your dog. Helps make your dog more personal to the people who will be moving him to and from the terminal and anywhere in between. - your dog won't need a collar or leash on him while in the crate. When you put your dog in the crate at the terminal, take them off and tape them securely to the top of the crate, so you or whoever is meeting him at the other end has easy access to them. - no sedatives or tranquilizers. All my Flickr pictures are public, Lydia. Glad you're enjoying them! I usually go to a cemetery carrying a list of photo requests. If it's a small cemetery, I hope to find the requested gravestone on my own. I did well this time, but this doesn't usually happen. It helps to contact the cemetery manager. Quite often I suspect a very old stone has fallen over, or sunk, or become so smooth with age that the text is unreadable. So while I'm there, I wander around and take pictures of old gravestones at random. Then when I put them on my monitor I look to see if FindAGrave needs them or not. If the deceased person is not listed on FindAGrave for that cemetery, I create a memorial and add the photo. If a memorial is already on the website, but needs a photo, I add mine. If a memorial exists with a photo, I don't do anything with mine. Yes, I can think of two, possibly three, small cemeteries where I photographed every stone in the place. This time I found several stones that disagree with the information already posted for those persons on FindAGrave (different dates, different spellings). I'll contact the people who manage those memorials and point these things out to them.

I think it is good for a photography company to have the name of the photographer in it. This is one of the few services that customers want to feel comfortable with and feel like they are getting personal service, rather from a large, impersonal company. My friend's company is just "photos by stacy". Kalie Studios; Kalie's Portraits, etc. Best of luck to her, whatever she decides.

PS- I like Fenceline Photos (or Fenceline productions) and Family Reflections; A Portrait Sudio.

"Picture This"

What a fun business to go into! Tell her to think about doing sports/activity photos. That is HUGE business around here. Every sport my kid is in - they have a picture taken. Soccer-Volleyball-Basketball-Swim Team-Dance-Track-Baseball-Softball-Football -- eh.. You get the picture? LOL! I don't buy one every time - but I do get quite a few. Usually it is an individual picture and a team picture for around $13.00

Wish I had the type of camera to get into this. I love my camera, but I don't want to put the $$$ into the cameras, lights, equipment, etc. it takes for a pro. Going into the business would be a great way to pay for it though!

I have added a link to one of my favorite photographers - oh she does great work! She is very creative and very nice! Might give your DD some idea on prices, etc. too.

THANKS for all the ideas!!! Kalie is watching this thread too! =) I would still like her name used in the name...because it IS unique!!

They are really excited about this adventure! She is waiting on her new camera and 2 lens' to arrive....more than all the cameras I have EVER owned...PUT TOGETHER...X's 4!!! lol But, you have to have the equipment to do the job.

Keep the ideas coming! (maybe if someone else comes up with a good name with her name in it...she will like it..you know...it won't be mom's idea! LOL)

How about using one of the state nicknames (not necessarily the state in which she lives)? Some of them are catchy, and it wouldn't matter if she moves out of the area. Plus, it will be easy to create a logo for many of them, like Sunflower, Pine Tree, Pelican.

She could also use the name of her favorite flower or bird.

One thing to be aware of is that if the name she chooses is too common, the domain (the "dot com") may already be taken.
