Go to your local feed&seed or coop store and buy some seed potatoes. Cut them into chunks wherever you see an eye sprouting. Buy some powdered sulfur and sprinkle it all over the raw potato, like flouring chicken before frying. Let them sit overnight. This will cauterize the wounds and help keep the potato from rotting once buried. Commercially grown potatoes are treated to keep them from sprouting eyes but you can go to the grocery store, buy a few potatoes, wash them with soap and water and put them in a dark, warm place. They will begin to sprout. Better still, ask the produce manager at your grocery store if he has any sprouted potatoes he has culled. He may not be able to give them to you but he will probably sell them for next to nothing. One plant will grow a bunch of potatoes.

I agree that it does sound like Sum and Substance, but it was so uniform - every leaf was perfectly turned upwards, almost vase-like, and it was just glowing in full sunlight. My neighbor across the street has S&S and it doesn't look as good -- although it probably doesn't get the TLC that the other receives in the backyard. Ken, that is a nice suggestion to bring them a small gift. They seem to be very private people though, I wouldn't want them to think I was spying on their backyard. It really is gorgeous though - I would LOVE to see the whole thing! We have had a slow and steady rain since at least 7am here in Chicago...hostas (& everything!) are just loving it! Howdy! Many Bluebirders don't get to see the babies go for a few years. I am sure you will get to join the "I saw them fledge" club soon! Do you have a somewhat wooded area near? You say you thought they would go to your "tree" meaning you only have one? The parents will have guided them to the safest nearby spot with lots of tree cover. It must not be to far off since you have seen them on the fence. Keep the meal worms out and they will bring the babies down in a week or two.

My ds was similar to that in preschool. He would get into trouble soooo much! I would talk to him, put him in time-out at home, take his favorite toys away, take away movie time, etc. I cried over it a lot blaming myself and thinking I must be a horrible mother for my son to act that way! He was not like this at home and I couldn't understand it. I am not sure what made me realize this, but the program he was in was not very structured. There was lots of free-time and if he chose not to do group time he could play instead. The teachers were young and inexperienced. I ended up finding a Head Start preschool/pre-k program. It is a very structured program for low-income and at-risk kids. Because I was a single mom in college at the time I qualified for their services. The teachers all have college degrees (which they did not in the daycare preschool he was in prior to that). They had a lot of experience and were very kind to him. He thrived in that structure. Sure he tested the waters at first, but they were very consistant and he adapted well. He is 9 now and still remembers those 2 teachers at Head Start and how much fun it was there!
