Garden all clean and ready to plant. (pic)

Now if only the weather would cooperate and stop going down into the 30's at night. I had bought some tomato plants, pepper plants, squash plants and have lots of seeds to plant. I had them still in the pots sitting in one of the raised beds when we got the low temperatures. The leaves got a little burned but I think they will be ok. I moved them to the greenhouse. All my brugsmansias which were just beginning to sprout got freezer burn too. This is April in CA, we shouldn't be having such cold nights.

Lucky you for having yours all cleaned up. We've had rain and thunderstorms everyday for more than a week now and it's way to soggy to get out and dig.

I hope the drop in temps didn't do any damage that can't be undone.

Alley and highalttransplant, I enjoy digging beds from scratch too. Have no choice really, because I'm creating beds where there are many invasive shrubs, saplings, and Vinca minor growing everywhere, and they must be dug up or weed-wrenched. Not to mention the tree roots and rocks! I have pulled out many 3-4 inch roots (leftover from tree removal). Sometimes I use a large maul to whack away at the roots. I call it the "break-your-back digging instant bed" method, but it's great exercise. I am using the lasagne method too, for future beds. I lay down cardboard, then spread an inch or two of sloppy wet coffee grounds, then leaves, grass clippings, compost, garden debris, whatever. Let sit about 6 months, and presto all grass or weeds underneath are gone, and the beds are easy to mix a little and plant.

Got hot so the backfilling went slowly, then it rained, then I left town for a few days. Spending a few days in beautiful Door County, Wisconsin. Planting delayed, but should be done by the end of this weekend! Thanks all for the compliments...hoping it turns out well! I can design the heck out of a defined space that gets "finished" right away but am still having trouble planning for the future and long-term gardening. I guess I should just come to terms with having to re-arrange things down the line.

A friend gave me some irises a couple of years ago when she divided hers. I didn't get many blooms last year since they were still pretty young. They seem to be putting on a show this year. And yes, I think they look great with the roses. Especially the rose bushes that get kinda leggy. Yea, I could prune them, but I'm a pretty lazy gardener. It all looks so neat. Hope you will post pictures when you plant your seeds. What kind of seeds are you planting? I am in the same shape as Linda, wet and soggy and more rain on the way.

We have spent the last week bringing stuff out of our greenhouse and placing it around the yard. The geraniums and begonias look gorgeous and are full of blooms. The garden has tomato plants growing and we're fixing to plant squash. Spring has sprung in East Texas and I am thankful for it. Yea Mom Nature!!!

Wow! That's a big garden. I have herbs and tomatos in containers. I saw some squash plants the other day, I may plant those under my kitchen window.

When I had an Apartment years ago, I had onions in containers, too!

I'm afraid I can't handle planting in rows.

Thanks everyone. You would think I would keep the weight off with 2.5 acres to take care of and me doing most of the work but not so.

I am planting 6 tomatoes, 3 different kinds that grow in the fog belt of the CA coast. Sweet pepper called Banana pepper. And a new squash called Banana squash, never had it before. I always like to try something new. I have rhubarb, globe aritichoke, beets, romaine lettuce, carrots, onions and chives already up.

I will be planting Jerusalem artichoke, peas, carrots, parsnips, butter lettuce, garlic, green onions, Italian green beans, kolhrabi, summer yellow squash, winter squash - Lakota, Delicata, Sweet Dumpling, and Turbin.

Heat loving plants don't do as well because we get a lot of fog in the summer so gave up on eggplant, cukes and melons.
