Drain opening in new sink doesn't line up with existing drain pip

I've just had new kitchen and bathroom countertops installed and am trying to get the plumbing for the new sinks done. I've run into a problem on the kitchen sink in which the drain hole in the sink doesn't line up with the existing drain pipe and trap. What can I do to work around this? Any ideas?

2 possibilities.....if the pipe coming out of the wall is plastic...looks like ABS plastic...you could cut it off to shorten it and then it could line up. The piece attached to the end of this piece is called a desanko or trap adapter. It is glued on and a new one will be needed. You should get a another ABS rather desanko rather than one made of PVC and then use ABS cement. Or if you get a white one (PVC) you will need a special glue to attach PVC to ABS. When cutting cut it a touch longer than you think you need and do a trial fit. If it's still too long cut a little more off. The point is you don't want to cut too much off on the first cut because then you will have to get a new, longer trap.
A second option is to get a flexible tail piece...that is the piece that goes from the sink basked to the trap. But I'm not sure that a flexible tail piece will bend enough to make the connection that you show.

If the house is a new build then the tee for the dishwasher will need to be cut to allow for drainage. Just like a garbage disposal has a knock out plug the new tee needs to be prepped. I found this out because i also had a couple of inches of water at the end of the test cycle and everything was connected texbook. And i thought i didn't have the high loop high enough but it was fine just a purposely blocked new tee. A ge tech had to tell me this, I felt dumb because i have installed numerous dishwashers but never in a brand new home. Hope this helps

My strongest suspecion is that drains are improperly trapped and/or very short before opened to daylight. In addition to traps on lines,some arrangements must not have an open tee on lines. If you see an inverted T in the lines,temporarly plug the opening to see if that cures or improve's leak. The inclosure must be reasonably air tite which can be helped with foil tape. As air flows through handler,which does it pass through first,secound and third ,blower ,filter, evap coil? Was blower,coil and strip heaters replaced as a unit or was part of old handler retained? If this turns out to be the problem a baffle can be installed on condensate pan as last resort. By rook or crook,you must have a filter or things will just get worse.

You have three choices: "with separate P traps" "on one P trap" "whatever will be best in my view after I learn more". Having one P trap is do-able, and the kits can be web searched using key words "Tubular Continuous Waste". The length of the horizontal part is not a problem. It's the same principle as when one connects a disposer to the one and only P trap located under the second sink drain. One Ptrap is all that is required for two drains. The "trap arm" comes after the P trap. Your trap arm you already have can be used for two sinks and a DW. The horizontal pipe upstream to the P trap is not called the "arm" . johlliu in your 2nd post you said "The trap arms would each be about 16'' long, if I use the existing drain" . Here you may have meant the pipe in "Continuous Waste" kits. But since you used the word "Arm", someone might come in and advise you on the scenario of two Ptraps.... Because two arms means venting each arm prior to the Wye you mentioned. Did you really mean that you wanted two P traps? (Maybe you just want to do the most possible, optimal, up to a certain point.) Do you really want to have two P traps? To know whether installing 2 Ptraps will be easy or hard, you have to talk to the local AHJ to see what their stance is on using AAV's to vent trap arms, or redoing the venting in the wall. For the discussion it would help if you knew where venting was in your wall Everything written above may need to be redefined more precisely. brickeyee...I thought of that too, but if you look at the picture I still don't think it could be made to line up unless something is modified.

I don't see the problem. The "J" Bend swivels if the nut is loosened, the slip joint extension tube slides in and out of the drain pipe. That offers a great deal of adjustability. The only thing missing is the proper tailpiece for the sink. The link offers explanations if one reads carefully.

bus_driver....the extension tube is in as far as it can go so it can only adjust out which it appears to need, but...it looks to me in the picture that the j bend won't swivel far enough to line up under the basket. Of course, it's pretty hard to determine that fact from the picture. It just appears that way to me.

I agree with Brickeye. It appears that if they first attach a tail piece to the sink then connect the J-hook of the P-trap tot the tailpiece and rotate the J 180 degrees they should be able to unscrew the locknut on the trap adapter and slip the P-trap tail piece out and make final connection.
