Which size bar pulls for shaker drawers?!

Hi,

I am using bar pulls (like these - in case I have the name wrong - http://www.eclectic-ware.com/Eclectic-ware/Arthur_Harris/Arthur_Harris_pulls/arthur_harris_pulls.html )on my shaker cabinets.

On all of the vertical cabinets I went with something that is 6 inches or so. I ordered extra long ones for the drawers. But now that they are here, I am afraid to install them as they look kind of huge and dominating.

Any kind of standard for this out there? Inspiration photos?

Here is a pic of the kitchen more or less as it is now (cant see the drawers in it but the small pulls are on as you can see over the women's heads - these are the same size on all the rest of the cabinetry) plus pictures of the large drawers in question without pulls or counter- sorry no recent pics) - this is the LAST THING for the kitchen!

Pull size/placement is a lot about personal taste. In my kitchen, I used bar pulls that were very long because of the scale of the kitchen. On the doors, roughly 2/3 the size of the door and on the drawers, filling up the majority of the inside rectangle formed by the rails/stiles. In my bathroom, a smaller space, I used 6 inch pulls on the doors/smaller drawers, and 18" pulls on the really wide drawers. HTH!

We are using Restoration Hardware Felicity pulls on our drawers. We have shaker style cabinets and the 36" drawers will have 10" pulls. I tend to grab drawer pulls with my one clean hand when cooking so all of our drawers will have one pull even though a lot of people recommend using 2 small ones per drawer. We will use 4" pulls on our 18" drawers, and we have some 6" and some 8" pulls for the ones bigger than 18" and smaller than 36". HTH.

I will second what pussuskattus suggested...although it is definitely more work/time, we found that it was very worthwhile to mock up the drawers and try out our handles that way. We ordered various sample sizes of our handles and DH cut some scrap wood planks in the lengths of our drawers. We then just placed the handles on each board and it was VERY quick and easy to determine which size to go with. It was surprising what we found...definitely some different outcomes than what we had thought before mocking up. There would be no need to cut wood, though...could easily just use posterboard or scrap cardboard from a shipping box. And the ribbon idea would be easy, too. Would save the step of buying the pulls if you don't know for sure yet what you want. Good idea for next time! Good luck with your search on the vintage pulls!

I did shaker fronts on all areas 9" or taller, and slabs on the rest. I thought full shaker would look too busy since I have some small drawers. We have cup pulls on all drawers and knobs on all doors. Here's where I get stupid. :) (Not really, we're building and don't move in until this week and exact placement of hardware is eluding me right now...) I think our cup pulls are centered on slab fronts and rail-mounted on shaker fronts. I have some pics at home and will be happy to share this evening if you're interested. Now it's bugging me that I can't remember!

A good rule of thumb is that the pulls should be approximately 1/3 of the drawer width. It's an eye-pleasing proportion. We have 3 different sizes of drawers so have 3 different pull sizes for them. I agree with Vinudev_liny - can't beat the mock-up for helping decide. We used the heavy cardboard from the boxes the cabinets came in to make the mock-ups. The pulls we liked came in 10 sizes or something like that. I cut the cardboard in the pull shape and about 5 different sizes we were considering, and held them up to the drawers and cabinets (we also used the pulls vertically for the cabinet doors). Made the decisions so much easier.

I have the same pulls on all cabinets and drawers in my kitchen and I like it that way. My drawers vary from narrow to 36" wide. They all get one pull, and it is 5.25" wide. It's a good width- think "Goldilocks" - not too long, not too short, just right!
