4 drawer banks with shaker style--flat or pieced?
Comments (24)When I was researching cabinet styles, I noticed a correlation between door and drawer details. The simpler the style, the more likely you'd see slab drawers, sometimes all slab and sometimes mixed with 5-piece drawer fronts. As cabinet styles became more detailed, there was a much slimmer chance of seeing them paired with slab drawer fronts. As buehl discovered, plain fronts don't look as finished with more detailed doors. Drawers that echo door details just look better. I think you could go either way and I'd be more inclined to aim for a balanced look of stile versus inset panel. 1" clearance between stiles doesn't seem to provide that, IMO. Your wider stiles sound more like the contemporized Shaker cabintes that Ikea offers. Perhaps you can find some inspiration by looking at photos of Ikea kitchens. There are several in the FKB. Here's an example of a 4-drawer bank next to a 3-drawer bank from mindstorm's kitchen (link below). You can see more photos if you click on the link to the photo album from mindstorm's FKB page. Comments (12)There is no one right answer to this. Our decision was influenced partly by me being short so we chose a placement that put them about as low on the door as would look nice. Our pull's "legs" (the part of the pull touching the cabinet - not sure what to call that so leg seems as good as anything) are round. We placed ours on uppers so that the bottom leg of the pull (i.e. the bottom part touching the door) was centered with respect to the bottom rail. On the lower cabinets with a door we did the same thing except with the top leg and rail instead of the bottom. The result is that the end of the pull is kind of centered on the diagonal running from the inner corner of the rail and stile to the outer corner of the door. Since your pull has a longer leg, that might make the bottom of the pull look a bit too close to the bottom of the door.so moving it a bit higher with the inner edge lined up with the inner edge of the rail as DCward suggests might be better....See MorePositioning and placement of two pulls on a drawer
Comments (12)Thanks for the advice so far! I'm still getting used to the new site, and didn't realize that while I have notifications about new comments enabled, it doesn't actually do anything unless I also enable the settings under my profile. This is how it looks with the hardware in the two spots (excuse the mess): I tried dividing the drawer in half, centered on each half, but that's too far apart. And I tried centering the pulls over the 1/3 points, but that was way too close together. If I exclude the stiles, and just focus on the 33" inset panel, dividing that in half and centering on each half places the edge of the pulls 4.25" in from the stile, or 7.25" from the edge of the drawer. That puts them a little wider apart than the 7.5" from the drawer edge placement on the bottom drawer, and certainly narrower than the 6.5" from the edge of the top two. Our KD says she really likes the way the top two drawers look, and that she likes that they're consistent with the drawer stack to the left, and my wife agrees. I like how they match the drawers to the left too, but I'm concerned that the gap between the pulls is too large and looks off. Is that just me? Am I completely over-thinking this? Don't think I don't hear you all nodding!...See MorePull width for shaker drawers
Comments (3)On the other hand, I would not want the responsibility of drilling holes in my new bathroom fixtures for drawer pulls, no matter how easy, since my astigmatism and progressive lenses make doing anything like that at below-waist level iffy. So that means taking each drawer out and to a work area. Forget it, not while I am moving in, and not in my new cabs when it is a chore I have never done. Nope, I would not do it myself. Especially not when I am moving in. Can you go up to the search function, put in "shaker bathroom vanity" and choose "in photos" as your option. Just ignore all the stuff that is NOT what you are looking for, and check out the drawer pulls in the photos of the shaker cabs until you get a feel for what you like best. Sometimes, if it is a bathroom that you really want to see better, if you click on the photo there may be more shots from other angles in the article the photo you are looking at came from.
