Venting experts - can you vent through the roof?
Comments (10)DH and I installed a vent in our upstairs bathroom, venting through the roof. Did it ourselves - no leaks. We have cold, snowy winters and stormy summers - no leaks. My Mom's house was built in 1977, range hood vented though the roof. This is nothing new. What does your friend's GC do, exactly? I have a vaulted ceiling, and the only issue I can see with venting the range hood is enclosing the vent line so it looks halfway decent. I've see photos of them (standard range hood, with cabinets above) cased in with drywall, bricks, and wood. Again, not rocket surgery....See MoreRunning drain vent lines through attic?
Comments (1)PVC requires the correct PVC hangers. Location also depends on attic temperatures in the winter. How cold will it get? The pipe also must be pitched to drain, just like every other part of the DWV system....See Moresealing plumbing vents at roof
Comments (3)As Hendricus has already pointed out, they make a metal "pipe flshing" that is about 20"x2" with a hole in the center and a rubber boot that seals around the pipe. It is installed so that the shingles on the row above the pipe fit over the metal and the metal will fit over the shingles on the row even with the pipe and the row below the pipe to insure water on the roof will flow over the roof opening without a leak. You need not worry about it because any reputable roofer is fully aware of how to properly install flashing around vents and they will automatically include them in your bid....See MoreVent bathroom fans through roof or gable wall?
Comments (10)JDS and Joe don't laugh at my lack of knowledge but explain something to me. We have wooden hexagon shaped attic vents in three gable ends. See link below - mine are similar to this. I need to remodel a bathroom and install an exhaust fan. Can we run the duct work to the exhaust fan out the hex attic vent? I would use the one closest to the bathroom of course. If so, how does the duct attach to the attic vent? I am assuming there are some type of clips or fasteners or thing-a-ma-jiggies that does that. DH and I DO NOT want to go through the roof, but would if absolutely necessary. I had always assumed we would need to go through the roof so this discussion may help solve our problem. Joe don't you dare get sarcastic - just tell me if I am on the right track. I would hire you to do this if you were in Kentucky :). And I wouldn't get three quotes. Hex wooden attic vent...See Morelazypup
