Has anyone toilet trained their kitten?

To use a human toilet. I adopted a 3 month old kitten yesterday and was thinking about giving it a try. I am not good about changing the litter box. I don't have much of a sense of smell, and it gets bad before I notice. My husband is very sensitive, so I don't want to subject him to it. I am home all the time for the next 6 months so can be very consistent with training. Thanks!

Some cats take to it and some don't. There are sites that sell kits to make training easier but read the link below before making your decision.
I believe that if a cat is healthy, yet you find it has a very smelly poop, then the solution is to change the cat's diet.
I find that my cat's litter box has very little if any odor but I do scoop once a day. My cat's diet is all wet food so she urinates a lot and I don't think there's any way I could skip a day of scooping!

The only thing I'd worry about in the future is if your cat developed health issues (sore back, leg problems, and just general old age aches). Climbing up on a toilet would take a lot of effort vs walking into a litter box.

You don't need a good sense of smell regarding a litter box. You just get a routine of cleaning out the lumps and putting in new litter in. The ladies here can give you an idea of how often. My cats have always been in door/outdoor cats. Can't do that now because we have a pair of foxes who live in the hedge row behind our homes. Last summer there was the parents and four kits. A cat wouldn't stand a chance outside.

Hi; I'd like to add my two cents worth....we have a 3 year old rescue kitty. I believe there was a bit of pot inhalation in his first year, so that might account for his plant predilections, but he is an insatiable rose eater. He prefers the blossoms, but if I break those off, he's happy enough with the leaves. I overwintered a couple minis indoors, and had to keep them wrapped in bird netting to keep him from defoliating them. So, this might be a baby phase with your kitten, and he might be teething, but there's no guarantee he'll outgrow it! Our cat is very social, and likes to be with us when we garden; we spend a lot of time with the roses, so this may be part of what attracts him. Of course, he'll eat any florist flowers we bring into the house, too...SIGH. So, I guess you'll either have to not spray, or spray with cat friendly things, or put something down in your rose beds that the cat finds aversive (moth balls, maybe? I know there are smells that horrify our cat, but can't think what they are. Probably if we hung bacon from the roses, he'd stay away. SUCH a strange cat). You can also try some behavior mod with the hose when the kitten approaches the plants. That would have been a permanent fix with my old cat, but I think Mike has just learned that he's not to eat the roses when mommy is around. Anyone tried a train rack in the tub/shower?

absolutely, i would do this. my home was built in 1959, and the two tubs both have a towel rack inside the tub area. i found that the back of the tub, away from the showerhead, never really does get wet. and i've never understood the logic of putting the train rack above the toilet. i guess, to fill in the blank space there (artwork is better). but really, it's not a practical location from the sink or the tub... just don't locate the rack too high up (mine is 69" from the tub foor). if you have a stationary shower (not the deatchable type) your towels should not get wet.

Has anyone's child ever had a Herbst appliance?

My 13 year old granddaughter will be wearing one of these Herbst appliances very soon, but it's not intended to correct an overbite or underbite. She had been experiencing headaches for about the past two years, and for over a year her jaw has been making a loud clicking sound as she opens and closes her mouth causing her pain each time. She was finally taken to a dentist who then referred her to an orthodontist. They thought it may be TMJ, so the doctor ordered an MRI of her jaw area. It was not TMJ. The right side of her jaw isn't even connected, and the clicking noises are coming from left side of her jaw . The orthodontist said he has never seen a case so sever as this in a child before...only saw cases like this with adults who have been in a traumatic auto accident, or who have had a forceful blow to their face. Her mom doesn't recall any such things ever happening as she was growing up. But I do remember when she had a root canal and cap done at the age of 3 or 4 years old. I distinctly recall how she cried in pain for hours afterwards and I couldn't find a way to comfort her. I even drove her back to the dental office where it was performed that same day and they insisted nothing was wrong with her. The orthodontist who just recently requested the MRI be done, said she has a smaller mouth than most others. I have a gut feeling, and from after talking with others about this, that there's a possibility that when they did the root canal procedure it may have partially dislocated her jaw and that her jaw never went back into the normal position as she was growing all these years. The Orthodontist does not guarantee that wearing the Herbst will even solve her problems in the end, which is heart wrenching to even think of. It's even more heartbreaking to know the pain she is going to have to endure wearing this appliance. But worse, if it doesn't work, they said surgery is the next option. I've heard that with surgery nerves will be cut and loss of feeling in the chin area occurs causing the person to always drool. That would be so traumatic for any teenager to have to deal with. This is so difficult to even imagine what might happen in the long run. I just pray that wearing the Herbst will completely correct her condition. Please, if there is anyone else who has had this similar condition, please let me know how your results were with wearing this appliance.

One stray kitten that I took in pee'd and pooped in the bathtub, right over the drain, for a couple of days. (At least it's easy to clean and sanitize a bathtub!) She was afraid of sharing the litter box with my other cat. I did two things--I got a second litter box. And I scooped up her poop and put it in the box and then put her in the box with it. After that, she started using the new box all the time. Eventually, she got to the point where she'd use both boxes, one for pee and one for poop. I would limit access to both the clothes baskets and the sinks for this cat. And do have a vet check him out. There's some useful tips at the link below. Linnea, ideally the poopies should be removed daily and the litter changed according to the directions on whatever brand litter you use. I have plain clay, non clumping litter and empty the box once a week or less for one cat. Again, the solids are removed daily.

I would never try to toilet train a cat. Who wants to sit on a toilet seat that a cat has been crawling all over? Ick. Keeping the litter box clean is one of the responsibilities of loving your cat.

I tried toilet training mine once but wasn't successful. As someone else mentioned, you don't wait for the litterbox to stink before you clean it. If you do you're likely to have a cat that starts using a clean place outside the box to do its business. We use scoopable litter and scoop it on the way out in the morning and when we get home at night.

It only takes a few seconds to scoop it every day. My cat has bad constipation so I need to know if he pooped or not so I can give him a laxative. It's not fair to the cat to have to use a dirty, stinky litter box. I use litter that clumps. Otherwise it really stinks of pee. I'd be afraid the kitten would fall in the toilet. Then you'd have to bathe it. Ugh!

I have to agree with the others. Cats are not meant to go in the toilet and they would prefer a little box or to be let out. I use a corn based litter and scoop every morning it takes less than 3 minutes to do it. I Dump the litter and refill once a week and I wash his box out about every other month.
