San Gabriel/Brazilian Black granite anyone?

I've been to several stone yards and I've only ever seen this type of granite at one. I've been considering Black Pearl and Black Absolute, but after seeing San Gabriel I think this may be the one. I only looked at one slab today, but I'll look at the others they have once dh is with me. Does anyone have San Gabriel? What colors do you see in it? One of the reasons I like it better than Black Pearl is because I did not see brown or green in the slab I looked at.

We have San Gabriel Black on the perimeter of our kitchen & love it. We looked at several different black & grey granites, but none were dark enough for us until we got to the San Gabriel.

I just went over and looked really close at the granite, and I see black, various shades of grey and some very very small scattered flecks where the grey has maybe just the ever so slightest hint of green or blue--keep in mind, my nose was practically touching the granite at that point :-) Standing back from the granite (or just upright in front of it), you see the black with the grey accents. It is a very uniform & tight pattern granite, so other than the predominant black and grey colors, it is very hard to see any other colors in it.

Everyone talks about how dust shows on the dark granites & how they are having to wipe them down constantly. While I have seen this first hand with Mom's UbaTuba, I don't notice it so much on the San Gabriel. Maybe the grey flecks help when it comes to dust.

Thx dreamhome. I'm surprised only one person here responded to this thread. I guess it's really not a very common stone. I don't know why, it's gorgeous!

danielle - I purchased this stone and it is waiting for install. It is actually called Milky Way or Via Lactea. Not sure why they called it Brazillian Black - perhaps they were trying to be descriptive of the difference between this stone and the Absolute Black from India that I thought I wanted. I really love it - just enough subtle veining, a nice leathered texture, very dark with a bit of a sheen. Can't wait to see it finished! It was purchased from Mont Krest in the Tampa/St. Pete area. Brazilian Soapstone? Anyone have it or regret it?

I am reading every GW thread about soapstone trying to convince myself that I will love it if I use it in our remodeled kitchen. I keep learning important new information, so thanks to all GW posters. I assume that what Trebruchet is saying is that an edge that is more rounded won't show chips as much. I recently talked to a kitchen designer who used soapstone in her own kitchen and she said that she should have "eased" the edge more, because it wouldn't show the chips as much as a hard edge. Has anyone else found this to be true? I am not a fan of polished granite with lots of movement, and I think the look of soapstone would be perfect for our traditional white kitchen, but I just don't want to have it look beaten up in 8-10 years. Also, I agree with the comments about honed back granite showing every fingerprint and smudge. I've seen this and have talked with homeowners who absolutely hate their honed black granite for this reason.

I'm surprised too! I know when we were at the granite yard, they had about 6 slabs of San Gabriel and all were already spoken for by several different customers. We had to wait 4 weeks for the next shipment to come in to select our slab. When the installers came, they commented about how hard the San Gabriel is--evidently it is one of the harder stones.

Does your black san gabriel have any pitting in it? I just had kitchen counters installed and noticed pitting in it.
