Looking for painted bedroom furniture inspiration

While we are still waiting to hear for sure that she has been accepted, dd (16) has applied to go on a language exchange next year. The program has the French girl (from Quebec) stay with us for three months, and then dd will live with their family for three months. I have been telling people that I am not sure which is going to be harder - having *2* teenage girls living here, or having *0* teenage girls living here!

Our guest room serves double duty as my scrapbooking and craft room. I plan on relocating my craft supplies somewhere else, and once those items are gone, there isn't much left in the room besides the bed. I happened to find some very inexpensive bedroom furniture today, and I am hoping to pick it up and paint it for a fresh, more modern look. The current owners had planned to refinish it themselves, but decided to just ger rid of it after partially sanding some of the pieces. They are only asking $100 for the entire set.

Does anyone have any suggestions or inspiration pictures? I am currently leaning towards black but would love to hear all suggestions. The room will go back to be using as a guest room after she leaves, but I doubt I will have trouble finding things to store in the dresser drawers :)

What about a nice butter yellow color? I am seeing more and more yellow furniture pieces lately and, if done the right shade, can be very nice. Good luck with dd:)

OMG, nosoccermom, that HK bed would be right up DGD's alley! Can you image my adult guest's reaction when shown to their bedroom? The oak furniture only looks good on the outside and it is not family heirloom quality. The washstand is sturdy, but the dresser and chest are not so nice. I really would like to keep the white bed to lighten up the dreary oak for a little girl. I know, a brown comforter doesn't sound too girly, but it reverses to white and the pink sheets should help. Any suggestions for brightening up the oak furniture? Here is a floor plan. I doubt I'll get a rug and it certainly won't be solid pink! Next to the closet is the highboy chest. The dresser and mirror are to the left of the window. A low bookcase or toy container(s) of some type could fit in the corner between the chest and dresser. Craigslist has been a bust for twin beds. I've been looking for almost a year for something other than bunk beds or "This End Up" type furniture. Don't get me started on the beds listed with mattress and box springs that cannot be sold without. I've been tempted to pay for the set, load the bed frame up and just drive away leaving them with their old mattress and box springs. The temptation dissolves every time I hear of another Craigslist transaction gone bad where the seller or buyer ends up dead. Yep, 3 times this past year in my area.

I love Moonshine as well and had that picked out for our bathroom so will try it. Sylviatexas1 - You're right a green color looks great but that's what we have currently and it's been there for 10 years. Was hoping for a change :) Off to slap some samples on the wall!

I just finished these 2 projects. One was for a master bedroom (bottom pic) and the other (top pic) for a guest room. The EA pieces tend to look a little heavy, and I think a creamy color would give them that softer feel. Depending on your skill level, you can paint a cream color and then add a glaze. Both of these pictures are also stippled and then waxed for a *real* furniture effect. Also, new hardware will do wonders!
For the mirror, you can even add a little glam by using a metallic, either all-over or just accents.

My sister has some old oak bedroom furniture that is chunkier than yours (1980's) and she painted it a dark brown/black. It looks amazing. She had it painted at a body shop with car paint because it should last another couple of decades.

She changed out the hardware and replaced the mirror that sits on the dresser like yours. I can't remember if she just removed all the wood from the original and reframed it with molding or if she got a new mirror.

Her "new" bedroom furniture looks like it just stepped out of a pottery barn catalog.

We paint a lot of vintage bedroom furniture for our shop, and we do many pieces in black. It always amazes me how a dark color such as black can really bring an old piece to life. If you would like a link to our shop site you can get an idea of how different pieces look in different colors. I do a lot in white, blue and taupes. Hopefully you can get some inspiration on how different colors look on different styles.
