Will this Craigslist Dining Room Set fit in my Dining Room?

Hi everyone. I am a newbie and very excited to join you with my first posting. I would appreciate any and all advice you could offer to help solve my decorating dilemma. My living room/dining room (see photos #1 and #2) is one large area - basically a mishmash of different styles of furniture which I've accumulated or inherited over the years.

I saw this Chinese style dining room set (displayed in the third pic) on Craigslist which appears to be in good condition. I would like to replace the marble table I now have with a larger table but does the Chinese style set go with my living room furniture? I was concerned that the addition of an additional color wood, black lacquer, would be too busy.

Another problem is where to place the Chinese style buffet/china cabinet. Although the room is quite large, there is very little wall space since the widest part of the room is all glass sliding doors. If I were to get rid of the large wall unit on the dining room wall, I would have to build bookcases elsewhere in the house to hold all the books that are now in the cabinet. Alternatively, it could be moved behind the sofa on the opposite wall where it would take up the entire wall. Would that be overpowering and would it look bad behind the sofa?. The Chinese buffet piece is about half the size of the large wall unit. and might get lost on the big wall in the dining area. There is also a pretty server piece that comes with the dining set.

Please advise. I am baffled.

Wow, from the picture they are gorgeous. I would think you could work that in, and if you wanted, add a few Chinese items to your living room.

You could always put potted plant, etc. to fill up the wall.

Beautiful dining set! Could you put your wall unit where your couch is and switch your couch and your chairs so the chairs are against the unit. Not sure if that would work. Any other place for wall unit?

i will post just as soon as kitchen is complete; hopefully next week with the exception of banquette seating cushions and window treatments you can request a catalog which will give you an idea of what they have to offer but seeing it first hand was a necessity for me and i still ended up going out on a limb by doing a two tone stain which in the end is sooo perfect for my kitchen now I am thinking maybe getting a smaller table in the one color for the banguette; going to call and get a price before broaching the subject with DH.....he is kinda done with spending on this project. But it would be sooooo perfect ;>)

You all have been amazingly helpful. I worked on each suggestion each of you made. Some I wasn't able to execute. For example, I will buy the right size hurricane candle holder but nothing I have now simulates it correctly Â I know I will use it, if not for this then in the summer when it will all change. I lowered the painting; there must have been five holes behind it, but none in the exact spot that Les suggested. Some of the suggestions didn't work right IRL and so the pictures aren't included here, and some looked good in IRL but the pictures somehow did not do justice. The inspiration picture had no context Â it was a tiny picture of the compote and plant only, but I recognized the compote as mine. And thank you for all the general decorating tips Â I will try to learn to apply them. Brutuses: I bought the real baby tears plants a few weeks ago for this project. They are in the original plastic pots with a plastic pot plate underneath, fitting perfectly in the compote. They are moisture and humidity-loving and prefer bright filtered light. They are now next to a south-facing window with sheer curtains and seemingly thriving. I have to water them every couple of days. Jejvtr: my DR is not ready for viewing yet! IÂm working on it but it's not at the stage where I can ask a coherent question. I have a mirror that is perfect for the dresser, but it is so massive that it projects too much from the wall when hung. So it looks quite ugly from the two main entrances to the DR which are to the left in my pictures. Maybe I should rearrange the DR Â later. Someone asked for my favorite. I'm not sure yet, but DH weighed in for using the china. I'm definitely in the market for a larger new clock and a collection of different-height candlestick holders, maybe for summer. In the meantime, I put the clock back in its original home with the rectangular silver tray underneath. Looks really nice. Here are some additional pictures if you're curious about the results.

You say your table is 72", which is 6 ft. Since you don't mention a table width, I would assume the max would possibly be 48" or less...4 ft or less. Add a foot x2 onto each measurement for the chairs at the table on each side, then add 2 ft x2 for the chair with a person seated at the table. So 6 ft long, plus 2 ft of chair space plus 4 ft of guest space, makes 12 ft. Since your room is 13.5 ft, yes the length fits unless your chairs are very large . Your table width is likely 4 ft or less (unless round, then you'd have a very tight fit), plus 2 ft for chair space plus 4 ft for guest space makes 10 ft or less depending on the table width. So the width would fit. Hopefully your DR isn't totally enclosed so it will feel like you have room visually around it also. HTH

Absolutely love the DR set! It blends well with LR, too. I'm not a fan of books/bookcases in DR anyway, so loss of book storage there would not bother me. Unless those books are really display items, I would put them in rooms where they would be used. While the current wall unit is functional for you, it is not as decorative as your other existing furniture and the new DR furniture. I would not add it to the LR.

kew 2006: I moved the living room furniture in front of the wall unit in several different configurations. Unfortunately, it just looks awful. It is way too crowded and impractical with furniture blocking the wall unit.
So I guess the issue is function vs. aesthetics. If I get the DR set, the wall unit has got to go. But since I need the storage space, I would probably buy a wall of Ikea bookcases and put them in a bedroom.
Is the new DR worth the trouble?

Yes! That dining set is gorgeous. Can you use the wall unit in other bedrooms rather than buying IKEA? Seems like the unit you have is better quality and maybe you could divide it up if needed. Is the depth a problem?

How would it look if I put the dining room buffet behind the sofa and left the wall unit where it is? Stupid?
My kids would be very unhappy if I moved that monster wall unit into one of their rooms.

I think you would lose some of the beauty of the table and buffet if you separate them and left the wall unit where it is. I think your idea of selling the wall unit and getting more manageable sized bookshelves for the bedrooms is a good one. If not Ikea, then watch cl for shelves that work in your bedrooms.

It's a lovely home and that set would look very nice in your dining room.

I agree with the others who say to buy the set but don't separate the pieces. It will look lovely with your formal living room. Your wall unit won't look right in your living room so I'd find another home for it. If you want the dining room set, you'd better grab it before someone else does.

I agree with buy the set and don't separate the pieces. However, it looks like your wall unit is actually three sections. Have you looked at separating those and using them in different places as you would smaller bookcases. It might be a temporary measure while you assess other options.

Keep in mind that the china cabinet is going to give you storage as well as display.

I will also chime in that I love the DR set! I agree, maybe you can separate the wall unit in your existing DR.

If I'm correct the dining room set is Henredon. My sister has a similar set but has the oval table instead. It was an incredibly expensive set - I'd check the maker if you do buy. You may be getting a treasure - or a really good copy.

The set is made by Century. The asking price was $2800. It is gone. I waited too long and chickadee2 predicted the outcome.
Thank you everyone for all the insightful advice. Furniture shopping and decorating are not my strong points so I really needed and appreciated your input. The bright side is that I can continue hunting on Craigslist and don't have to deal with emptying and moving the wall unit for now.
