Still more water softener questions

14 years ago

I thought I was ready to buy a softener. I've done the plumbing and created a space for a softener but now I'm not sure which system to order.

Depending on whose calculator I use, I need a 48,000-64,000 grain system. Most have 2 cubic feet of resin but some sites recommend up to 3.5 cu ft. Can someone help me understand how, when or why more resin would be required?

Is there any downside to buying say an 80,000 grain system and regenerating less often? Conversely, what is the advantage to regenerating every few days as some suggest?

Can most systems (Clack or Fleck) use NaCl or KCl interchangeably? Will a POU RO system installed for use with a NaCl system need to be by-passed if I switch to KaCl?

The facts:

4 adults (will be 2 within 2 years)

dishwasher

washing machine

three full baths but only 2.5 are used regularly

3/4" plumbing

4.4 gal/min flow rate at bath tub

no iron

no magnesium

7.0 pH

private well

water tastes, looks and smells fine

25 grains/gallon of hardness
