Off my rocker?-Solar water heater?
Comments (17)Blessings What I plan for this winter here in the high desert(5850Â) is to use a solar fountain pump (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=66093) I have a steel water tank that is buried in the ground and 3/4" of it is covered, this part is on the outside of the fence, with the other 1/4" on the inside where the animals can drink,as the tank is about 24" deep and will be setting the pump up on a 1" piece of steel to keep it out of the blow sand that the wind blows in. Since I have cover the tank most of the way the blow sand has drop from about 2" to 4" in a week to maybe 1" in a month. This pump can pump up to 2.62 ft high . So with the pump set back under the cover where the animals canÂt get to it. It should keep the water moving enough to where at the most it might freeze is a thin layer on top where the tank is open. The freeze ground point is about 18" so the bottom of the tank is kept warm from Mother earth so warm water will be pump up through a tube about 4" where it will move the warm water off the bottom up as I am trying a small 12 vote motorcycle battery I am going to use instead of the small panel and batteries that came with it along with a 1.5 watt battery charge(rhttp://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=4476) as I plan to hook up two pumps just for the safe side the small 12 vote battery should work and keep the pumps going 24/7. I pick up a bicycle light generator that I may hook up to a small yard windmill for the days when there is no sun. With using a black battery box with 2Â foam all around the battery and a cigarette lighter plug in to hook up the solar panel to battery and a DC female plug for the pump to plug into on the battery box. So the whole thing is under $100.....See MoreSpin off RE: water heater and recirculating pump
Comments (17)There are different types of heat tracing. I used constant wattage in my system, and can't comment on other types. Aptly named, it produces heat with no limit, thus the need for control(t-stat)...exactly like your water heater. Memory isn't good, so I can't give prices (my system is over 10 years old)but IIRC, there is a minimum footage purchase (10' maybe)and then per/ft. cost. Insulation cost is a wash- any system should be insulated. My system is designed to maintain a temp. just under the heater setpoint. The longer the insulation maintains static condition the less power used. Cost for my system with expensive, quality pipe insulation was well under a circ. pump. Installation requires no plumbing, but does require minor electrical skills if power isn't nearby. Installing the trace and insulating will take longer than installing a pump (without return line- which could extend time considerably), but is not skilled work, simply conscientious. My situation has 20' of trace,@5W/ft. At the old kWh rate (just increased), operating costs were penny/hour. Note the system does not operate continuously. Circ. pumps consume power starting at ~400W, 4x my consumption, though of course they are intermittent duty too....See MoreHow to fix a rattling door & cold showers from oil furnace/heater
Comments (43)So the service company came. They did many things to address the rattling door which had no effect: - changed the filter - changed the strainer in the pump - adjusted the air flow next to the pump - blew air through the fuel line back to the oil tank (the burner whined loudly after this then quieted down) - bled oil from the burner - started to remove the flow control from the system then decided it was working fine and put it back Finally they changed the nozzle. They stepped the nozzle down to .75 by 70 degrees and wouldn't you know the furnace is back to its quiet happy self. What a relief! I can sleep again at night. (They did not clean/vacuum the furnace.) The showers have been consistently hot, set at 170, 190, and 15 differential. The tech did not have a tool to test the water temperature. Still need to retest the circulator but much progress!...See MorePentair Minimax NT Pool Heater
Comments (5)I solved my various ignition problems on my Minimax 400. Wouldn't ignite, shut down etc. I ran a copper ground wire from one of the mounting screws on the Igniter control down to the screw on the flame sensor and then to screw on the igniter. I have not had any ignition problems or error codes since. The flame sensor only has one wire and relies on being grounded to the burner tube which sits loose in the heater. Grounding problems went away with the addition of the ground wire. Hopefully this will help someone. It can't hurt to add the ground wire....See Morejmcl
