Solderless crimp style copper connections

I rented a bathroom remodeling book from the library the other day and the author was using copper connections that were crimped in place. The fittings had a ring on each end with an o-ring of some type. He used a rather large tool, that I believe was plugged in, to compress the fittings. Is this stuff still used? I have never seen it anywhere but it looked like a slick idea. I didn't see a date on the book, but it didn't seem very old.
