P-trap

Continuing saga of the bathroom reno.

Our exisiting tub has differnt dimensions than our new Maxx insert, and additionally we had to shore up the shower area wall with a new 2x4, adding some depth to the cavity. As a result of both of these things we have to move the drain 4 1/4" from where it was. The centerline (C/L) for the drain location is 16 1/4" from back wall and 7 3/4" off the side stud wall. Adding the 16 1/4" to the 4 1/4" given me a C/L of 20 1/2 for the drain.

What I'm curious to know is this:

Does the location of inlet to the P trap have to be a straight pipe from the outlet of the bathtub / shower? I'm pretty close to the joist on the right side and water supply to another bathroom makes it tricky. To make the location mentioned above I would need to use a 90* to clear an exisiting cold water pipe and then another 90* to get the flow going down again.

Comments appreciated.
