My Day So Far and How is Your's?

Today Amber and I went to a few garage sales. I found some nice things I can use. Some sewing notions, a few Rubbermaid things, a brand new two piece Martha Stewart bath mat set, and a book. I was happy to get them. The weather is perfect. Izzi and I are going outside for a little while. Today is our oldest daughter's birthday. I called her first thing and wished her Happy Birthday. We will have a birthday dinner later on for everyone's birthday that is this spring. It is 68 with a bit of a breeze and sunshine. Can't ask for more. How is your weather and how is your day going?

Weather is beautiful...heading into the 80's with a possibility of 90 tomorrow.
Today, have to bake as sheet cake for a family cookout at SIL's house tomorrow. Think i'll make chocolate with cream cheese icing.
Otherwise, it's laundry day...just finished sorting, and the first load is in the washer.

My pindo is the only protected palm in the garden. Last winter we didn't have a single daytime high below freezing. Last week we had four in a row and bottomed out at 13, coldest night I've seen since I moved here full time four years ago. We've had a few minor, dry snows this past week too from a trace to 2". Even protected, I expect a bit of damage to new fronds emerging from my pindo like last year. Other palms are unprotected. 11 windmills all look fine, other than a few ratty tips to some fronds from wind and icesickles dangling. They looked stressed during the coldest and snowiest of last week, but bounced back quickly when we got above 40. Sort of like acuba. Two 7 gal palmettos from Gary's Nursery in NC look better than the windmills. Their stiffer fronds seem to handle the light snow better. One Sabal Birmingham (also from Gary's) looks fine. One lower frond looks like its bronzed, but could just be the oldest one reaching its end. Three Med fans (all blue pots); the largest (planted as 7 gal two years ago) is well sheltered from wind by two larger camellias. However some fronds appear bronzed, probably because it also gets full afternoon sun on cold clear days. I've read that warm direct sunlight after extreme lows or winter precipitation can cause this. The two smaller ones out back, get less sun and look great. Last year, they had a tiny bit of new frond/petiole damage after they started growing. Six (blue pot needles) all fine. Many seedlings (sabal minors and palmettos, med fans and windmills from seeds scattered around my beds) mostly are unaffected. The only ones that seem to be suffering are palmetto seedlings out front, also in bright afternoon sun light and exposed to northwest winds. The strap leaves are burned to the mulch level, but are green below the mulch. Last year they recovered and grew several more straps. Long term survival questionable there. Happily the other palmetto seedlings in more sheltered settings are fine. The palms I'm most concerned about are two saw palmettos that were planted last spring. A friend brought them back from Florida last year and they are purely experimental. Mostly they look well, but some burn on some frond tips. But the new emerging spears look really brown. I will resist tugging on them for now. But if I lose them, ill replace with something less tender. Overall, I'm confident the core of my palms will be fine.

you had a more productive day than i did, lol...i was bound and determined to get the laundry baskets empty! i'm down to the final load (just a slip-cover) with the upstairs bathroom re-do almost finished, dh can take his basket back upstairs and not get his stuff mixed with mine. i hate his dress shirts getting in general laundry...they're all wash and wear and if i'm quick and do them alone, i don't have to iron! we had about an inch of that fluffy snow but it was almost all gone by 3...we still quite a base from the 7" we had last week. my most important thing was calling ds2 and finding out what time they were headed to the hosp for induction tomorrow...9:30am, so if i do go out, it will be early. we're not going to hosp, as they've sort of closed it to everyone except patients. they're trying to prevent that 3rd outbreak of h1n1... while i'd love to be there, i can wait 48 hours til baby gets home. dil is sort of high maintance and it's better to be on her terms...so wish us luck that everything goes well...i'd hate to see her have to have a "c" section, unless baby needs it...he'll be our 8th grand and second boy...(their first)

Sue, sorry your mom spent her birthday in the hospital. I'm glad she's doing good, though. Stargazzer, from what I could see at the airports I went through everyone took their laptops out and put them into the gray bins to go through the x-ray machine. I've been at work and actually got to leave early on my 8 hour day!!!!! Doesn't happen very often. Work was nice and easy today, another thing that doesn't happen very often. ( :

Less than impressive. I was crying the blues last week because little black bugs got into a number of the turnips, that were growing well - I guess they thought so, too. Then quite a few of the tomatoes, which had been growing well, developed black leaves and stems, some of them on most of the plant, and where I hadn't been able to see the ground in part of the plot, and was preparing the staking for it, it got to where I could see the ground in a number of areas, and where they were thick, there were a number of stems and branches that were lying on the ground, some wet and rotting ... and some dry. I got up earlier than usual this morning, but instead of going out in the cool time, did a few things in the house and when I went out and began untangling some baler twine, it was so hot that I went inside of the shed where it was cooler. I need to add some strings to the pea vines and when I went to the south garden to do it there, found that the brace line from one of the end stakes had broken, so two at one end had fallen, letting all of the strings fall on both rows, with pea vines lying everywhere. I knew that I'd need to weed, so had taken the cultivator and did a lot of cultivating and pulling weeds from the peas, kohlrabi, peppers and watermelon. There's a huge amount of weeds yet needing to be pulled. I'll take the axe and chair down there soon to reposition the end stakes on the two rows of pea vines, then reposition the vines. I find that the edible pod vines grow much larger than the regular pea vines. Pea vines, one row and two rows of bean vines in the original garden need some more lines added, as well, and then there's more staking of the tomatoes, and cleaning out the crud from them ... a famous gardener told me on a radio phone-in on Monday to stake them, as they needed to have air circulate to stop the moulding. And, how does one remove the stuff that's contaminated without dropping spores off of them ... and avoiding touching the good parts of the plants with one's contaminated hands?? There are peas that need to be picked, and a bunch of beans, plus some lettuce and zucchini. Need to wash dishes, do a laundry and vacuum, as well. Plus - my right knee is showing out of my overalls, and I have some denim to patch it. Sometime when I can find some time. Also ... I need to sew some hook-and-loop fastener tape to some elastic so that I can make a retaining belt for my underwear briefs, several of which are so old that, the elastic having lost its zip, like to hang down around my knees: not very useful, when it's located like that! Need to get some milk, too. And some investment records that I keep are behind, as well. Oh, yes - I need to write a cheque for the Income Taxc people, as well ... they compound daily on amounts owing that are unpaid. I asked my furnace oil dealer the other day, who charge interest rate of 1.5 - 2.0% per month on unpaid balances after about 60 days, what rate they pay on credit balances, as they've held a credit in my account for several months. As it turns out that they pay zero per cent ... so I had them cut me a cheque and I need to deposit that. That should keep me busy for a while. ole joyful

We are under a severe thunderstorm warning. I have the dishwasher running and am getting ready to go deliver Meals on Wheels. Then later today I will volunteer at the hospital. I just love volunteering there and pick up shifts whenever they need a sub. I keep forgetting it is my birthday!

Gorgeous here--warm, sunny.

Got up early, did some stuff around the house. DH called to tell me that for the first time in over a month, he wouldn't have to work Sat. YEAH! Then I went to the bank (tax refund is finally returned--another YEAH!) visited aunt in nursing home. Rearranged the car so we can pack up to head to the country tonight. Just have to wait a couple of hours for DH to get done working this afternoon, and we can take off.

Got up this morning and went to a local flooring store to pick up some carpet samples for Lauren for school. When I took them to her at school she said she was feeling bad, sore throat and all over not feeling well. I took her home, had to cancel my workout with a personal trainer. My first workout with her too. Rescheduled it for later next week.

So, then stopped by Wendys on the way home and got a taco salad. When I'm done eating I have to run to Wal-Mart and Kroger to pick up some groceries and a new blade for my power saw/trimmer.

It's warm and breezy so I'm going to spend the entire afternoon working in the yard. The neighbor finished mowing my front yard this morning. I started it but was so tired last night after pulling weeds and trying to cut down a vine/ground cover that I didn't do more than mow down some weeds around the edges of the lawn where the bushes are. One of these days I'm just going to have someone come and landscape the front and back.

So, after I fix my hand-trimming of bushes out front I'm going to work on pulling and digging up weeds out back. It's a mess back there already from all the rain we've gotten.

didn't get t bed until 4am..just couldn' sleep..so caught up this am....just got out of the shower and wanted to check in here..it's sooo pretty out but really don't have any outside errands til dh gets home and we do the weekly banking...it's date night, maybe we'll try a new place not too far from here..

outdoor soccer has started so have 2 games tomorrow...depending on the weather...rain is in the forecast...last year this time,i was confined to sitting in the car, recoverying from my lumpectomy...doesn't seem possilbe it's been a year..

It's still pretty early here on the left coast but I have a full day ahead of me.

I'm currently at the office but at 11:30am my design team is heading to Newport Beach for a few hours of R&R then I head home to change for dinner at a nice Italian restaurant followed by a theater night to see Dreamgirls. The night on the town was a result of a drawing I recently won. Can't wait!

Gorgeous here too but windy. I weeded flower beds until 2:30pm, then called it quits. Gonna take it slow this season IF I can. I'd like to sit and enjoy the fruits of my labors for more than a few days this summer.

Cold, rainy and expecting more may snow flurries tomarrow. No gardening yet, but the farmers need to get into the fields.

Still windy here also.
Had to call the dr for dh.He had that spinal cord inplant done on monday and yesterday he started getting a rash,and today it was all over his back,red and itchy,so i took him back in.The dr thinks it may be from the solution she used to wash his back with b4 the surgery.Me i thought it might be from the tape,i know i'm allergic to all those tapes they use,and thought he might be also.Who knows.She just gave him a script for benadryl,and he goes back on monday.

Then we had to stop at my oncologist office on the way home so i could pick up a prescription also,then to cvs,then el polo loco,then home.Made it a loooooooooooonnnnnnnnnggggggggg day.
