Undermount uneven double sink drain is not lined to p trap

Hi, we got reversed (80:20, bigger-right side) undermount double sink (Alba sink) but main sink drain to p-trap is not lined up. The sink is 8-9 inch depth, so there is not much room from strainer (main drain sink hole) to p-trap. Do you think we can use a flexible plastic drain from stainer to p-trap? I am not sure anyone has problem? I tried to google for installation of uneven double sink but so far nothing! Any input very much appreciated. The black pipe is old metal pipe (p-trap) and someone suggested to cut the black metal pipe but then how easy to cut solid metal without compromising p-trap?

If you examine the tailpiece on the left sink you will notice that it tilted about 15deg to the right. That angle will most assuredly result in a leak. The tailpiece must be straight down from the sink.

To get as bit more vertical clearance at the P-trap disconnect the cross tube from the left tailpiece and the trap. Cut the tailpiece off about 1-1/2" below the dishwasher inlet. Now re-connect the cross piece and it will be about 2" to 3" higher.

Now attach a flange type extension tailpiece to the drain on the right sink. (Be sure to install the clear plastic ferrule on the flange before you connect it to the sink).

You will have to cut both the cross tube and the tailpiece on the right sink to fit the baffled tee directly below the sink drain.

You will have to cut the black metal pipe. That pipe is 1-1/2" cast iron and it can be very difficult to cut if not done correctly. It can be cut with a hacksaw or reciprocating saw, but keep in mind that cast iron pipe is brittle and if you try cutting it with a saw you run a high risk of shattering the pipe, leaving a very sharp and rough end, and if your luck is like mine it would probable shatter back into the wall, not to mention that you will probably wear out half a dozen good quality blades before you get it cut.

The correct way to cut that pipe is with a cast iron pipe "snap cutter". You can rent a snap cutter from a local tool rental for about $15 a day, and I can assure you, if you try cutting with a hacksaw you will go through at least that much money in blades, not to mention an hour or more laying on your back in cramped quarters and cussing the whole mess.

The snap cutter has a cast iron body with a crank on one end and what looks like a bicycle chain on the other end. The chain is wrapped around the pipe at the point where you want to make the cut and re-attached to the cutter. You then turn the crank a few times until you hear a snap or pop sound and the cut is complete.

Once you have teh cast iron cut, discard both the cast iron pipe and the existing P-trap the use a Fernco coupling to connect a short piece of 1-1/2" sched 40 PVC pipe. Attach a PVC 1/16th bend(DWV grade 22.5deg elbow) on the pipe and another short length of PVC with a Trap adapter on the end of the pipe. Install a new 1-1/2" tubular slip type p-trap from the tailpiece under the baffled tee to the line to the wall.

Galleyette: It's far from finished, but it is fully operational..running water and the ability to get rid of same. Because of the limited space below the vanity we chose this sink - somewhat of a cross between a vessel-style and a counter level basin. The extra inches above the top made for an easier fit underneath. Here you get a good idea of the unique construction of this dresser that made for an easier installation. Notice the space where the p-trap is located...unused space behind the drawers. You can also see - right under the sink drain - a rail on either side for the smaller upper drawers. Another unused interior space, we routed supply lines here. Easy access for drain. Another interior view. bottom of basin is visible between two upper drawers. This scrollwork sits on a maple veneer 5" spacer between the two drawer fronts. Nice detail on the outside - you can see how convenient this is when you compare to location of drain fittings. Still needs a bit of refinishing work, but the whole idea is it looks well loved! We couldn't believe how well it turned out. Steve

You have three choices: "with separate P traps" "on one P trap" "whatever will be best in my view after I learn more". Having one P trap is do-able, and the kits can be web searched using key words "Tubular Continuous Waste". The length of the horizontal part is not a problem. It's the same principle as when one connects a disposer to the one and only P trap located under the second sink drain. One Ptrap is all that is required for two drains. The "trap arm" comes after the P trap. Your trap arm you already have can be used for two sinks and a DW. The horizontal pipe upstream to the P trap is not called the "arm" . johlliu in your 2nd post you said "The trap arms would each be about 16'' long, if I use the existing drain" . Here you may have meant the pipe in "Continuous Waste" kits. But since you used the word "Arm", someone might come in and advise you on the scenario of two Ptraps.... Because two arms means venting each arm prior to the Wye you mentioned. Did you really mean that you wanted two P traps? (Maybe you just want to do the most possible, optimal, up to a certain point.) Do you really want to have two P traps? To know whether installing 2 Ptraps will be easy or hard, you have to talk to the local AHJ to see what their stance is on using AAV's to vent trap arms, or redoing the venting in the wall. For the discussion it would help if you knew where venting was in your wall Everything written above may need to be redefined more precisely. I suspect aliceinwonderland's comment might be what is happening. I think that one side (especially the pressure from the disposal) may be siphoning the other side leaving a dry trap sometimes. We've tried everything else- enzymes and citrus to clean out disposal odor, etc. Also, I can confirm that the wall pipe is level and below the disposal discharge, so that may have just been an optical illusion from the camera angle. I will try re-plumbing with a single trap. But that still leaves me puzzled about one thing- When researching this, it seems the correct type of tee has an interior baffle to direct water towards the waste line, and not up the other side. I'm certainly not an expert, but this seems like a terrible design to me. It restricts flow, and seems like it would be a major opportunity for clogs. But all of the reputable information I can find shows that this is required by code and is how everyone seems to do it. I appreciate the comments and feedback.

"When I asked for the slight positive reveal he said they could but also said ”the silicone will turn black”. I have been retrofitting undermount sinks with straps and a slight positive reveal for 5 years or so and have never had a silicone joint turn black. Silicone "turns black" because of mold and mildew created by leaking clipped and blocked sinks. Clear silicone is an excellent choice for mounting stainless steel sinks. While it does have adhesive properties, its function is primarily that of a gasket. The straps do the work of holding the sink.
