Ahhh yes, I forgot about that too. I haven't had a dog with long ears since I was a little girl. We had cockers.

Luther has long, dropped ears. I wash them about about once a week, but that's all I do. Should I be doing something else? The only reason I wash them that often is because he and Penny play so rough outside that they kick up a lot of dirt. He was laying on his back one day for me to rub his tummy and I noticed how dirty they were.

I - and many people I know - have had great results with the 'Purple Ear Solution.' If this doesn't keep the ears clean, then it could be from something like food or allergies.

Unfortunately I have learned more than I want to know about ear infections in dogs. I have a Golden and we have sure had our share. After 3 years of constant infections I finally have them under control. Sedona's infections were mostly due to allergies, maily food. But you really need to have a test done to see what type of infection it is. I think the yeast infections are easier to treat and we have had those too! She is on a strict diet now and only eats an allergy formula duck and potato kibble. No dog treats at all! No rawhide or pigs ears. The only treats allowed are carrots, green beans, cantelope and watermelon (her personal fav!).

I also clear her ears weekly and sometimes twice a week with a medicated ear wash. Pour it in the ear liberally and squish around for at least a couple of minutes. Do this by grabbing the base of her ear between your thumb and index finger and massaging well. You should be able to hear the liquid being rubbed around. Hope this makes sense. If you are not sure if you are doing it right ask you vet to demonstate. For the longest time I was not getting her ears cleaned deeply and that was contributing to the problem. You also probably want to do this outside as when you are done he will shake and that dirty ear solution will fly! LOL!!! Sedona is also on a long term medication called Temeral-P. It is a light steroid antihistime. She takes it every other day.

Good luck with those infections. I know how difficult they can be to treat.

Harry shares his agony. We have "ear maintenance" every Sunday evening with a cotton balls and a blue soloution from the vet. We have to pour the solution in and then massage the base of the ear until you hear a good slurping/suction sound, then swipe it out.

During hunting seasons we clean his ears after every hunt or every evening after he's been in the water. Then I normally just dampen the cotton balls with the blue stuff and clean them that way.

About twice a month I add a steriod ear drop after the cleaning.

Of course, the blue stuff sometimes makes his eyes water, so he has to have eye gel, or liquid tears, after the ear cleaning. Then he has to have treats, one for each medicine. LOL Two ears cleaned plus two eyes with drops means he needs four treats; I swear the beasty-boy can count.

He gets so excitied after his treatments.

It use to be a battle royal to clean his ears; Wes would have to pin him down while I tried to clean the constantly moving ears. After his Mom, BeeGee, came to live with us she showed him how a "good dog" will sit quietly, lay her head on the person's lap, and let them clean the ears with no battle-of-wills and no struggling.

Yeah, I'm going to have to come up with something special as a "post ear cleaning" treat for him.

My parents had a dog who kept getting ear infections. He needed surgery to change the angle of his ear canals. My dog got ear infections after baths. Turned out I was getting water in her ears and caused them myself. I now put a cotton ball in each ear of her ears before a bath. She does not like them, but it keeps the water out.
