Cat repellant

My parents have 2 cats. One, a male, does not chew on things. The other, a female, chews on all kinds of things including the furniture, and dried flower arrangements. They have tried several things, like mint oil, to keep the cat away from their dried arrangements. The male stays away fine when the item has mint oil on it. The female does not seem to smell the mint oil at all.

What other kinds of repellants can they use to keep their one cat from chewing on things in the house? These are house cats, they do not go outside.

I didn't know cats chewed! What is she chewing? Maybe she needs some chewable treats. There are some for dental care she might like.

Can they catch her chewing? They could squirt her with a squirt gun.

My dogs hate bitter apple. I do have to remember to re-apply it periodically though.

A cat doesn't know the difference between compost and fresh turned soil. It's all a litter box to them. They won't dig into grass clippings, straw or wood chips, but they do make for a slug-fest. I put coffee grounds around the base of the plants that slugs love most and that does a great job of keeping slugs away - just make sure no leaves or stems are otherwise touching the ground. A study not very long ago showed that slugs hate caffiene. Not much of a stretch to figure they would feel the same about coffee grounds. It really does work. I find that cats won't disturb established plants. If you plant closely, and litter the ground with sticks (stuck into the ground randomly and at angles) until the plants fill in and cover open space, it really helps. Cats would rather go find a new place than to bother with the sticks. Kay.

Cat's are not part of the eco system, they are not indigenous to the US. Feral cats get rabies just as much as raccoons do. They produce at an astronomical rate. We have two sets of totally irresponsible neighbors who have litters and LITTERS of cats every single year. Sad for the cats, I know, but these people are totally irresponsible and are NOT right in the head. They have serious issues, and you can't talk to them. They are insane. Sort of like the movie "Deliverance". We have cats on our property constantly, and they do NOTHING for the mouse problem. Mice are everywhere out here. They piss and crap on everything, make everything stink like cat piss. The laws are at least where we are at, if an animal is on your property, you have every right to shoot it. Don't like it, keep the cat indoors, where it belongs. People shoot dogs that run loose, sad to say, but cats that become feral are dangerous and carry diseases, just like any other wild animal. Australia had a bounty on feral cats awhile back, they got to be so overpopulated and a nuisance (and killing indigenous wild life and birds), so they had a bounty, I think it was $10 for every cat. If feral cats keep breeding and aren't in check, this could happen too. Unfortunately too many people don't fix their cats and are irresponsible. Then everyone has to pay.

Not much that will work very consistently for that although this spray might help somewhat. The best solution is really to set up an out-of-the-way corner where they are allowed to go. "Seed" it with a few cat droppings to get them started. Here is a link that might be useful: Cats in the garden

I have never heard of a cat chewing on things. She probably has a toothache and chewing helps. When was the last time she was to the vet and had her teeth checked?

Oh yes, they chew on things. Often like to chew on wool or woolen things. The dried flower arrangements don't surprise me but the furniture does. I think Gammy may be on to something. How long as she beenn doing this and how old is she?

I think the cat is 2 years old. She chews on the dust flaps on the bottom of the couch, corners of wooden furniture, dried flower arrangements, all her toys which may be plastic, fabric, or mylar strips, or even fur, she loves shoelaces.

My parents take her to the vet regularly but I don't know if checking teeth thoroughly is included in the regular checkup.

This cat used to suck on my parents' necks at night or if my dad took a nap during the day. They (especially my dad), would wake up with cat hickey's on his neck each morning (no kidding.) So to me this indicates the cat is highly anxious for some reason or was weaned too early. I think both cats were gotten from the Humane Society or another similar org which specializes in just cats.

Where do I get bitter apple? Is it an oil from the health food store? An air freshener they would put on their dried plants?

Go to a pet store and look for the bitter Apple spray. They also have litter lime. HOWEVER, my two puppies do not mind the taste of either one of them. I am looking for a way to keep them from chewing on wood. DH wants to try jalepeno pepper juice next!

Yes, I hear that pepper juice can work, but it may also stain.

Bitter Apple and Bitter Lime are spritz-on preparations made to spray on things that you don't want in your pet's mouth. Be sure and read instructions.
