For my new shower, I ordered a Kohler thermostatic valve, along with a chrome riser. The shower riser will be exposed, but the valve is hidden inside a knee wall. The riser will come out of a hole in the top of the wall and extend over a glass wall - see photo:
Here is the link to the Kohler valve:

As you can see, it's got a female threaded connection on top, where I need to connect the riser. However, the riser I purchased is unthreaded (pretty much all exposed risers I've seen are unthreaded). So, how do I connect the two? My contractor said I need to use this nut and cone, which I guess would fit over the end of the riser:

However, he said that there's another "fitting" he needs. We have a bit of a language barrier, so I totally can't figure out what he means. It seems to me that I would need a connector of some sort that had a small male thread on one end to fit into the shower valve, and then another, larger male thread on the other end to fit into that nut. Right? Or am I totally insane? Also, from what I've read, a soldered connection is usually preferred over a threaded connection for showers because of the possibility of the threaded connection leaking - what does this mean for my application? Any advice would be much appreciated - thank you!!!!
