Why does my cat pee on my bed?

We've had our cat Phantom for almost 3 years now, we got him when he was 6 months old. We moved a little after we got him and we eased him into the new home and he was fine for awhile until my roommate's cat used his litter box. Once that started happening our cat would pee on the bed. Our solution was to keep them apart and that worked for awhile then Phantom would every once in awhile pee on the bed. We took him to the vet to make sure everything was ok with him and the vet ruled out a UTI and recommened we get him a second litter box so we did. We've been scooping the litter every other day and keep a pee sheet over our sheets. Almost every time we forget to put the pee sheet on the bed he will pee. I don't understand why he keeps doing it. I don't know why he would be mad at us, we give him lots of attention, buy the toys he loves and scoop his litter every other day. Please help!!!!

You might want to get a second cat liter box, some kitties do not like to share.

Mazer, they did get a second litter box, it isn't helping.

I would see another vet for a second opinion. Maybe not a UTI, but perhaps kidney problems are causing kitty pain.

If you are able to keep her out of your sleep area altogether do so. I had an elderly cat that started peeing in a walkway. I tried everything else and finally placed a litterbox over the spot--which luckily worked. Possibly if you moved your bed away from the area a bit and placed a litterbox right there it would help, but imo this cat has found a way to get your immediate attention with some other aim in mind, such as going outside or being fed. You could also try placing him or her in a crate, with a tiny litterbox into which you place the cleanup materials from his or her recent "accident" to see if that would get the message across, but it has to be done instantly after the transgression. Additionally, if the cat is allowed to go outside, you could give it tasty cat treats each time it signals a desire to go outside to you. It is highly possible that cat has been sending you signals that you have not been picking up on, and it is treating you like Helen Keller was by her teacher. Read up a bit on cat communication strategies and see if that will help.

I haven't posted on any forum on GW for a long time, but this one really got to me. Not in a bad way... it just did. My cat has peed for forever...off and on. Let's see. Got him in 1995 (my roommate got his sibling). Pee'ed everywhere (beds, chairs, carpet). Moved out in 1996. Pee'ed everywhere (cats outside the window). 1997-2000. Lived in a place with no cats outside. No peeing anywhere but the box. 2000-2003. Another place with no cats. No peeing. 2003-2004- Moved to a place with cats outside. He started to pee again. Husband threatened to kill one of us! LOL. Actually not so funny. I cried almost everyday. 2004-Saw the vet, linked the history, and my cat is on prozac as of about 2 years ago. No problems since. My problem (not MY problem...my cats problem...LOL) was territoriality. Don't discount the drugs in certain situations. It's best to be open-minded. It worked for my cat. I was considering giving him away or euthanasia...didn't want to do either. This problem had seriously affected my home life, which is why I was thinking about serious solutions. I'm glad I still have my cat. I adopted him, so he became my responsibility, and I don't take that lightly. Talk to your vet. And good luck from someone who sympathizes.

It could well be a medical problem, but is also quite likely a behaviour thing, the cat's nose may be 'out of joint' since being usurped by the other cat, and is sending the OP a definite message.

Cats will do this, since they lack the ability to actually SAY "up yours" they'll do it in actions.

I agree, the cat is unhappy. The ragdoll we acquired was given to animal control because she would urinate on the bed. Finally got the whole story, lady had new boyfriend, boyfriend didn't like cats. Cat was simply making an ownership claim. At our house, she has been perfect, never a problem from day one. Maybe you need to find the cat a home where she will be the only cat.

You should review the extensive messages on this topic here on the GardenWeb starting in 2007. This describes the varied reasons that cats do this.

My own cat is a 8 year old spayed female calico. She did this when I got her 6 years ago, always peeing when I was in the bed, usually on the blankets over me. This was definitely territorial at the time, as I had another cat. This ceased when the other cat died. Since that time three years ago there has only been one event that provokes the peeing, and this is the use of a comforter on the bed. This is a common thread throughout the other comments, although most refer to down comforters. Mine pees whether it is a down or synthetic comforter. There may be some residual scent in the comforter, not removed by washing, that she can detect. So if I want to use a comforter I have to shut her out of the bedroom, and remove the comforter in the morning and put it away.

I think that it is wonderful how your readers grapple with this problem and do not think of abandoning the cat. Such kindness restores my faith in humanity.
