Eddie and Ivy going to be parents............

Well Ivy came in heat I went and got her some diapers and a denim diaper....let them out to play last week and Eddie got her diaper off and and when I went to let them back in ummmm yeah....I did not want to have puppies and was going to get her fixed when I got back to OK to our vets. But guess they had different plans. I was scared because I was told that a dapple and piebald shouldn't be breed because you will get double dapples but searched on the web and it said not true you don't breed dapple and dapple together....sooo guess we will have puppies!! Oh well maybe it will make Ivy calm down some....Stacy

Kylie ........HUGS. I really did not aim for compliments when I posted this lol. But I just know that how I am and seeing a name and sometimes not even reading the WHOLE name and assume it is PAT and not Petrutza. Pat ....THANK YOU for going by Pat. Same reason I am going by Luzia. To me, both names are hard to remember rofl. Now I have never heard Petrutza before. How did your parents choose this name? I know we named our oldest Andrea because all we were thinking of was a boy and then...we had a sunshine. So out of Andrew...became Andrea. And since Hubby could not give me a boy to pass along his name....I just went and bought me a brug named Andrew's gold in his honor roflmao Lucy

Thank you :) Yes, dachshunds and corgies are very prone to spinal injury. But I wouldn't worry unless you have to...but at least you know their are great wheels out there for very little money (can you believe how inexpensive they are for the quality? I would've thought it would cost $2,000!!) So sorry about her 1/2 sister...that's so sad. Sawyer's bladder and bowel are involved also (bowel incontinence and urine leakage - she cannot urinate on her own, so I have to express her bladder..and as a result she gets many UTI's). It's a very difficult thing to handle, but we have it under control - just hoping she doesn't get kidney problems...we take her to the vet for bloods and urinalysis/culture every 2-3 months to check her kidney function and UTI status. Meghane, if you see this, what do you think about Nitrofurin (I think that's what it's called). Sawyer has been on it long term, and it seems to be helping with the UTI's. I can't get rid of this leakage though! She's on Proin 50mg BID and some other herbal med for incontinence. Any thoughts?

Earlier this year I wanted to go to the Weiner Races up in SF but DH didn't. I wouldn't enter Elvira, she is too fat! LOL Tell her not to do the hot dog bun costume - it has become over done. How about a banana and have the tail as the stem? Wish her good luck! Clare

Oh, that's so much cuter than my dog's clothes, Stacy. lol And the lumps you're gonna find in your stocking? Those won't be coal, baby! Paisley is having a little problem and look what I had to make for her! She's getting better though, only has to wear this at night. She had a UTI and was dribbling a bit. I actually wish my dogs wanted to wear clothes, or needed to, because I could make them some really cute stuff, there's some great patterns out there. The "bikini" Paisley's wearing was hard to fit to her, I can't imagine making something without having the dog right there to try it on over and over.

This isn't going to be a popular opinion here, but I believe you can still get her spayed, even now. Not saying I would chose that or not, but I believe it's an option.

I will after I get back from the doc Gayle...I should be in the shower now. Yes bearcat I thought of that but I just can't do it.........I called Ivy's "mom" and she has reassured me that it will be fine for her to have them so that is what we will do...now I have to worry like Lori and find super duper homes for the babies..........even though the kids want me to keep at least one I said NO! Stacy

Oh Stacy I can find a super home for one! Do you deliver????LOL
DD just went to look at a Piebald for the boys and it was gone by the time she'd gotten there!
I think she is giving up on a Golden and going with the rest of the family! LOL (we all have Doxies, except for the black sheep of the family who's a Chihuahua!)

I hope everything goes smooth for Ivy! Sometimes they have a hard time because the puppies are so long.

    Congrats Ivy and Eddie!

I love Doxies! You can send one here. Elvira, my Dachshund, needs an active little friend to get her back into shape.
    Best wishes.

HaHa, aptosca, I was just telling my daughter this morning that we needed another dog so our Doxie would do some chasing as she is getting a little pudgie. She is 11. She reminded me my grandson's cat would soon be home from college for the summer and she would have something to chase.

    Oh Stacy.
You will be doing your dog and yourself a favor to have Ivy spayed. You said you didn't ever plan on her having pups.
It is safe for her to be spayed for a while longer and that is what I would do. It's one thing to have to find homes for planned and wanted puppies; quite another for an unplanned batch.
And don't count on her having only three or four.

My dogs, although not purebred, verified back five generations.
The breed is proven. They are not hit or miss puppies. There are only two dogs I would consider breeding Gabby to. One got killed last week. That leaves one dog suitable to raise pups with. Most likely I will have Gabby spayed before her next heat cycle.
The problem with her last batch was the time of year they were born; we weren't out and about at rodeos to promote them. Had they been born a heat cycle later all seven would have been gone at four weeks.

And don't feel guilty about spaying.
It's really the best; not only for your dog but for you as well. Ivy is just day's pregnant and already you are worrying about the due date conflicting with your surgery. If I remember correctly, Ivy is a small breed dog, isn't she? If not bred to a comparable size/genetically correct dog she very well will have birthing problems. In my mind it would be much more heart breaking to have dead newborn puppies than spaying early in the pregnancy. There isn't any thing more distressing that hearing/seeing a b!tch having labor and delivery problems.

When Gabby has been in season she does not leave my sight.
And she is never let outdoors unless she is on a leash and I keep a bb gun and a twenty door at the door to scare off any would be suitors. If you don't spay you have to be very very vigilant.

    Lori

    Forgot to add:
I use the doggie diapers on Gabby but only to keep her from bleeding all over my house. A male dog is a determined dog.
The diapers are not meant to protect from penetration or breeding.

Sorry darlin' for being so blunt I but I truly think you need to spay Ivy.

    Lori

Heck, I want a puppy! Lol, ever travel to PA?

Oh! please spay the dog now! Neuter the male, also. Too many animals are killed every single day in the US.

It is difficult, even with cute young puppies, to place a dog in a good home.

I also would immediately have her spayed. Sorry, but I have seen far too many litters abandoned at the shelter I volutnteer at, by well-intentioned people who just didn't know what they were in for. Even worse is the laboring mom dogs who are having trouble and their owners abandon them rather than pay for veterinary care, C-section etc.

Are you prepared for 10 puppies ? To raise them for a minimum of 8 weeks ? To socialise them to all sorts of things ? Keep them clean and well fed, while they are peeing and pooping constantly ? What if they are sick ? What if mom can't feed them or rejects them ? Are you prepared to hand feed them for three or four weeks, at 2-3 hour intervals ? Have them vetted and vaccinated before going to new homes ?

And the ultimate question for me would be ... is it worth losing my pet over ? B*tches can and do die in whelp.

Breeding should not be taken lightly. It's nowhere near too late to spay her.

Doggie diapers is not a solution to keeping dogs from getting pregnant, spaying and neutering is.
We intentionally bred out Golden and she had 11 puppies that she did not have enough milk for. I bottle fed all those puppies for about 4 weeks, day and night.
Let me tell you, it's only fun the first few days then it is just plain hard and very stressful.
Any new dogs in my house are immediatly fixed, without exception, it's not something I do when I get around to it.
You are taking a chance letting her have puppies and it's not like you planned for them.
I hope you reconsider Stacy. With all the traveling around you do I wonder how you are going to take care of all these pups. Your 5th wheel is going to seem a whole lot smaller with all those dogs. Not to mention the mess of puppies.
This is all probably not what you wanted to hear when you posted about her getting pregnant tho.

Hope you don't mind if I chime in. I, too, would suggest immediate spaying. Yes, that does mean "sacrificing" the puppies, and of course that's a contentious issue.

But in addition to asking if Stacie is prepared to have a bunch of puppies to take care of for at least 8 weeks, think about each of those puppies growing up to potentially have puppies of their own, who grow up to have puppies of their own, etc. So often people say "But I have found homes for all of the puppies already". Well, that's wonderful, but what if those new owners don't spay/neuter, and other accidental pregnancies take place? More and more and more dogs adding to the tragedy of unwanted/euthanized animals. It doesn't just end with the immediate new family.

And for most every dog that is placed in a new home, another one, maybe in a shelter somewhere or being otherwise rehomed, won't be.

We humans, in my opinion, need to do our beloved animal world a favor by responsibly helping curb the "need" to euthanize because there aren't enough homes.

This is absolutely not a hit on anyone here. It's just my version of reality after being very involved in shelters and seeing way too many perfectly wonderful animals killed.

    They need us to help.

    Suzieque

Suzieque, your version of reality is so right on.

Pet overpopulation has been a tragic reality for too long now. :(

Hugs to you and others who realize the importance of neutering and spaying. And you absolutely cannot assume those who end up with new puppies or kitties will take care of it.

Any time I've rescued a dog or cat and cannot keep them myself, I make sure they're neutered or spayed before given to anyone..no matter how wonderful I think the new owner may be.

Hi Stacy! I'm sure you don't want to hear this but I too am in the court with those that suggest to get Ivy spayed right away. There are already so many unwanted animals out there. You would be doing Ivy a huge favor. I know it would be hard for you to make this decision. Isn't Ivy just a baby herself? I would also have Eddie neutered right away. He will be much healthier for it.

    Hugs to you, my friend!

1st off yes I know the diapers are not a prevention...I just didn't really think 5 min alone outside Eddie would
get her. He did Now I have to decide what to do. I have dealt with puppies before Mo had 2 litters of 8 and 11 puppies am I prepared to take care of them if need be yes I am it is my responsibily as a pet owner to yes it was also my job to get Ivy fixed was just waiting til I could use my vet. Now it is my job to do my best to make sure all goes well for her. Have I called my vet he knows my dogs yes I have he has assured me she will do fine that they are compabitalbe size wise etc even if I had planned this preg. I would have to deal with the reality of puppies Yes I will maybe be having surgery a week before she is due but ya know maybe this is what Ineed to get up and around better? Yes there is a over popultaion of dogs cats etc but the reality is their are also unwatned kids........so when you jump on me in a minute for this comment I am going to make think before you speak........if you as some here have had unwanted preg.s themselves did you abort them?????????????? I do not believe in aborting dogs cats kids........sorry that is my opinion what will I do if I can't find homes looks like my doggy family will just get bigger doesn't it????????? and remember when you flame me........we all have opinions on what we would do......this is mine I will do the very best I can........everyone have a great super day.....Stacy

Stacy, I'm with you 100%, I could never kill unborn pups.
We are doxie lovers and have had 3, I didn't think they could have large litters, maybe so. I wish your doggies all the best, it will give you something to look forward too.

I'm also am big on rescuing dogs, older dogs that most people don't want, absolutely hate with a passion puppy mills, but that is not what happened here, it was a accident. Lets send good wishes to Stacy that she finds the best homes for these pups. (((((Stacy))))

    Linda~

Stacy, Stacy, Stacy...no one here set out to flame you!
I think you are taking all the well intention advice wrong.
All of us are pet lovers. We all have soft spots in our hearts for animals.
When something like this is posted it is almost sure to get some strong opinions.
And that is what they are, opinions.
We can all sit here and say what we would do in your situation but ultimately the decision with this is yours.
Please don't think you are being flamed, because I doubt very much anyone here meant you any harm.
    I know I sure didn't.

    Congratulations!!!! Grandma. ruff,ruff!!!!

I'm with Stacy and Froggy/Linda. I could never kill unborn pups either. The guilt would kill me.
    ((((Stacy))))

Are you sure she's pregnant? I mean, perhaps their "union" didn't result in pregnancy. From what you've said I think you'd be happy about that, and then could get her spayed now before another accident happens. Wins all around!

I agree with Jenny that you seem to be misreading these posts as "flames". I don't read any that sound that way at all. From what you said about the 19 pups that Mo had, it sounds as though those were planned and not an accident, right? It's accidents that can now be stopped for Ivy if she's not, in fact, pregnant. As someone else mentioned, neutering Eddy would stop the accidents, too. I think you're saying that that's already in your plan. Good!

Nobody is flaming you Stacy and I'm really sorry you feel if we (I) are (am).

    Lori

"I have dealt with puppies before Mo had 2 litters of 8 and 11 puppies"
And what happened to those puppies? Did they all find good responsible homes?
Were they intentional litters or was a neighborhood dog the father?

Flang, I see you just joined today? Do you know Stacy? I am sure she found wonderful homes for those puppies of Mo's, Stacy is a very responsible person. That being said, what difference is it to you WHO the father of the puppies was? Excuse me but stirring the pot serves no purpose here.

Please, please, please, and with the greatest respect, if you are determined to let her go to term, spay and neuter the puppies BEFORE they go to their new homes. If Mo made 19 puppies, and each of Mo's puppies made 19 puppies etc etc etc ...

I say this as someone who has had to euthanise litters of newborn puppies and kittens dumped at overcrowded shelters by overwhelmed, well-intentioned people. Forgive my passion about this subject, but this is a sore point. I cried over every single one, and cursed at people who could let this happen. This is easily preventable.

Awww Stacy! Puppies! My passion...puppies! I am so jealous! We had an unplanned union of Mic(Min Pin) and Emmie(Chi) 3 yrs ago...resulted in 6 beautiful babies! I was so picky about new owners that I ended up keeping 3 of the boys.We lost one of them....but still have the 2.They are my Ricky and LilBuddy...my babies.2 of Emmie's pups got glown to PA and have great homes. 1 female has a lousy home here in El Paso,I gave her to someone I thought would be great, then they gave her to a woman that keeps her outside, lets her have litter after litter that all die from Parvo...makes me sick.I deliberatly made sure I didn't give my babies to certain people and one ended up with one anyway...I hate that part. But my boys...wouldn't give them up for anything.I did get Emmie and Mic spayed and neutered afterwards,so no more pups here. But I know you love your pups like I do and will make sure they have good homes or keep them.Good Luck and I want to see pics of the new family when it gets here! Can't wait!
