Stomatitis in cats...

I just found out my 7 year old 'little girl' has this horrible gum disease, and it's triggered by the immune system or lack of. It's also frequently associate with feline leukemia, feline herpes, and calicivirus. My kitty has been checked for leukemia, negative, but I need to find out if the other two were checked when a blood panel was done on Thurs.

My vet recommended I take her to a dental specialist who deals with mouth/gum diseases. He said the only alternative is to pull all the teeth, and from the way he explained it, she's having an immune reaction to her own teeth. I've also read it could be an allergic reaction to the plaque that forms on the teeth, and stress seems to be another culprit. It isn't as simple as giving antibiotics~they don't cure the disease, and it works for a very short time. She's had a steroid shot, but that's onlt good for 4-6 weeks, and no cure either.

I've read on several websites about interferon and lysine tissue treatments, and someone on another forum suggested lysine ointment~will call my vet on Monday and ask. I find it more infuriating that a dental specialist wouldn't even suggest alternative treatments if there is in fact something worth trying, but finds it very easy to line his pockets with $3600!
