I think a cocoa brown color (like around the edging of your rug)would look great-- warm, rich and would look great with your pink countertops and white trim.

I'm trying to get a feel for the rooms. Can you take some photos of the actual rooms along with the furnishings that are in the dining room? I'd lke to see the opening between the rooms also if possible. What is the flooring in each room?

I have to agree with brutuses, it's hard to get a feel for the rooms. What wood tones do you have to work with, what material is the floor, what are the kitchen cabinets?

My first instinct would be to bring the green of the rug in the kitchen, and pick a light greyish taupe for the dining room. The pink of the countertops seems a little peachy but that might just be my monitor; the green and taupe combo would not clash with the countertops but would not feature them either.

My first thought when I saw that BEAUTIFUL rug is it would look great in my new sitting room! And the wall in the room will be SW Redbud which is kind of a raspberry color.

Do you mind telling me where you bought the rug?

If you have hardwood floors and/or furniture in a mid-tone, raspberry walls can make it seem very orange, which will be intensified more by the green in the rug. Very dark floors and furniture work best with raspberry shades...think Victorian schemes.
The brown in the border detail seems, in your photo, to have a lavender undertone...what would you think of a rich, but not dark, chocolate that leans toward lavender? Those colors look wonderful with white trim, and would make the blues and greens in your rug stand out.
Another way to go might be a lighter, slightly more neutral value of the dominant color in the rug, which would have the effect of wrapping the room in that shade, and making it look larger. Your pink countertop would stand out particularly in contrast to that soft bluey-green shade.
Last thought...the beige tone in the rug looks to be heading toward the golden tones...what about a golden tan, with a darker version in your kitchen? You'd have to see if it worked with your countertops, but I think it might look great with the rug.

Here's a link to my photobucket album with photos of the kitchen/dining area. I had taken them around Valentine's Day when I had the table set for a VD dinner I was having. The bi-fold doors on the pantry are gone now, thank goodness. They've been replaced with the doors I had shown in my first post. That's really the only change that's been made in the room so far.

I do have plans to change up a few other things...I'm on the lookout for a new desk for my computer. The computer tower that's sitting on the floor is an old one I was using while my current one was being repaired. Got it back finally, so the tower isn't there anymore. I'm debating putting a cabinet on the wall over the new desk after I get one. I'm planning to replace the door at the end of the dining area with a French door. The pie safe next to the china cabinet will be moved since this area is so small and crowded. I'm probably going to take the leaf out of my table which will free up some space in this area. The brown wood doors will be replaced with doors matching the pantry doors.

The house is an older one with lots of quirks that I have to try to work around. Hopefully these photos will give you an idea of what I have to work with.

and did you say you were painting the cabinets or not? either keep them the same but if you are painting them i say i dark chocolate brown or i jsut painted mine a dark brown-espresso

Lilbit, the cabinets will be painted the same creamy white as the pantry doors I have up now.

Seeing your style I can see why you are thinking of going with the rasberry/pink. I'm thinking the two rooms should be different colors. I think the pink counter in the kitchen would need some contrast of colors, not especially the rasberry or pink. Although I can see the pink or rasberry or the dining room. I'm thinking a green for the kitchen.

Since I'm terrible at trying to work around rug colors, hopefully others will have some suggestions you can feel comfortable with considering.

BTW, love your style and your beautiful old pieces of furniture. If you need to let go of any, I'll be glad to send you my address. LOL

Brutuses, I hadn't thought of painting each one totally different colors! I was just thinking different shades of the same color range. I also hadn't thought of green since it's the main color in the rug. You've given me something to think about.

Oh and I'll give a yell if I decide something just has to go in the room. LOL
