The Kitchen Table

Well, I'm not too Surprised

DH was assaulted (and injured) at work about a year ago. The customer was charged and convicted, of course. Just found out, the assaulter has declared bankruptcy. So there goes my husband's chance to sue for his damages. Darn--people like that should NOT be allowed to use the legal system to cheat others. Oh, well, the company would have taken much of DH's settlement, anyway, so guess we're not out too much. But it was a very dangerous situation, and was a big part of his decision to retire just a couple of months later.

How awful. Traumatizing....then to be abused again by the customers inability and unwillingness to take responsibility. People can be disgusting animals. :(

Azalea, when I saw the title on this post I thought Oh, no they must have called a mistrial!!

I know you are watching, and so am I.

It gets more and more bizarre.

Sorry about the guy and the bankruptcy.

Sue.

Althea-It amazes me how you find this stuff, but I appreciate a good laugh any time. I rate Fox News right up there with Comedy Central...no wait, that's not fair...I actually pay attention to Comedy Central :) Our local Fox station seems to go out of their way to find the most verbally challenged people they can interview when covering stories. Uh..not that there's anything wrong with that.

Anne - never thought of that. It is grafted. However, I had about 15 roses that survived my disasterous overwintering in the garden. Of those that have flowered - 10 - they've all come back as the rose I've bought. So, I'm hopeful. I'm not going to dig around in the pot. I'll just wait and see. Probably won't find out until next year, since it's so late in the season. But it sure was a surprise to see that growth. :) Carol

Thanks so much, all of you. You know, my carpenter said several times, "I'm sure there's a solution to this. I just don't know what it is. Why don't you call a cabinet shop - they must have seen this before." I think I couldn't hear it because I was too upset. The cabinet company won't work - it's Ikea. (That's another reason why I've been upset about this. I see money flying out the window, and my budget is very tight already.) But there is a custom cabinet shop nearby that does gorgeous work. (I would have gone with them had I been able to afford it.) Maybe someone there will be willing to take the job. Bmorepanic, I agree with you - they shouldn't have installed the counter. Unfortunately, the installers relied on their templater's measurements, and had the counter installed before they discovered the problem. It was my own fault that I ordered a cooktop that's too large for the cabinet, but if the cooktop cutout had been made correctly, I would have discovered the issue during dry-fitting, when there was time for my carpenter to fix it. Boxerpups, I discovered that Microtrim site, but it specifically says that the trim is just aesthetic - it supplies no support. Footballmom, I had the same idea. If I can't find a finish carpenter who will try to remove the excess cabinet, I will ask the granite people if they'll glue some strips on to make the opening smaller. I'm feeling so much better after reading the posts by people who think it can be done. (And after sleeping, of course!) I just wish I didn't have to go to work, so I could start calling around right now!

I'm somewhat forgiving of tree butchery because I live in an urban area where there wold be no trees at all if people followed the absurdly restrictive guidelines you often read on this forum about how close to houses and roads trees are allowed to be. And those neighborhoods with butchered trees squeezed in as a whole are much cooler in the summer and more pleasant then the sterile urban wastelands or golf-course/McMansion neighborhoods. Not sure how you can loosen the tree laws protecting old trees without everyone chopping down their ancient oaks and replacing them with a teensy shrub or Bradford Pear, or "tree churning"...regularly planting inappropriate trees, changing their mind, then chopping them down and replacing them. Lots of species only look impressive when they are really old. I do wish people would plant "understudy" trees. Lots of people frantically try to keep an old tree alive. That's fine, but you have to know there is a good chance you will lose the battle. Plant several shade tolerant, long lived trees in the shadow of your dying giant to step in when the old guy goes.

I know this would cost you $$, but can't you go after him in another court to, say, put a lien on his house or car or other personal property? Your husband might need some therapy down the line (emotional or physical), and what if your health policy doesn't cover it? I'm sure your husband, and you, just want this drama to end, tho.

Sue--Bite your TONGUE!!!!! a mistrial at this point! I'm just so upset that I'm leaving in an hour and won't be home till Tues--going to be catching up on a lot of testimony on youtube! Of course, I'm going TO Arizona, but not to the trial--my daughter would divorce me if I dragged her there--LOL. But we planned the trip before I got all involved in Jodi's mess. Still, should be interesting to read the news and talk to locals. My niece--who we're visiting--is following closely.

Pammy--they're losing the house, so I doubt a lien would really make much sense. Luckily, as this happened at work, he's covered under worker's comp (and that case goes forward). AND we have pretty good health coverage, so we're hoping that all will work out. But it was a very bad situation, and happened on a day DH SHOULD have been on vacation BUT FOR the fact that he'd switched his vacay days because I'd been in the hospital the week before (guilt for me, right?) But thanks for the thoughts.

No, Azzalea - not guilt for anyone: sometimes we are, by happenstance, in the wrong place at the wrong time.

No way of knowing what may happen in such circumstances.

Just part of the routine of life.
