I don't know much about a cat's nutritional needs, but the problem with tuna is that it has a lot of mercury in it. Salmon has less and I give it to my dogs fairly often. I would imagine it's good for cats, too.

Personally, I don't think treats are a good thing, but I only fed dry food and no treats to my two cats for years. then I got a new one that starved herself almost to death literally till I gave her a specific kind of wet cat food. If you want to give that adorable kitty of yours a treat, why not a fancy feast can of cat food once in awhile? they are small and my four seem to LOVE them.

Personally, I don't see where feeding it every two weeks is a problem. If you were doing this twice a week or more, I would worry.

Well dang I thought I posted on this thread last night but I don't see it now. Tuna is high in magnesium. This can contribute to crystals and blockages forming in a cats urinary tract. Male cats are particularly at risk because of the tiny size of their ureatha(sp?) This can be possibly fatal problem. A taste every now and then most likely wouldn't hurt anything but I wouldn't give very much or very often.

For what it's worth, I asked about giving me finicky cat ground up turkey as she would go for days eating just a spoonful of every new food I tried. uncooked turkey was the the only thing she ate all up. I was told, it was not enough of a complete food to feed all the time just now and then as cats eat the whole catch and need all those nutrients which cat foods are supposed to have. Also, if tuna is not recommended for pregnant women or children, I would hesitate to feed even small amounts on a regular basis as cats are so much smaller and mercury would be too high a concentration. I'm still looking for THE TASTIEST CAT FOOD so I can relax and know what to bring home. I wonder if it would be worthwhile to stock up on live mice or catch some of those nuisance jays. Just kidding.

Try giving him those little jars of baby food; turkey, veal, beef, and chicken as a treat. Trust me, he will love it. My vet told me about it a long time ago.

Our cats are fed dry food exclusively, but they get a can of tuna every year for Christmas. And boy do they know the sound of the can opening... :)

Alas, there IS no "tastiest cat food". Just like people, cats have their own opinions about what is tasty. One of my cats would eat nothing buy dry food. It didn't matter which dry food. I could not tempt her with any canned food, canned tuna, fresh cooked shrimp, leftover steak, you name it. For 6 years, Penny ate only dry food. Then a couple of months ago a litter of 3 adopted us (actually, their mother abandoned them in our back yard). We lost one, but the other two have moved in and stolen our hearts. Of course, the dry food is always available, but the kittens get kitten chow with a tablespoon of canned food (any kind, they don't care) and a splash of water to moisten it, twice a day. Over time, Penny became very interested in what George and Alfie were having that she wasn't getting, and now she eagerly anticipates her "gushy" food twice a day.

Go figure.

Our outdoor barn kittens get chicken and broth every week so I can get food grade Diatomaceous Earth into their little bods. I also put DE in their ears when I notice any scratching for ear mites. They don't object to the powder like they did with ear drops! It works immediately for that and I am assuming it also is a natural wormer as it is for other farm animals.

Also, because of all the trace minerals included in DE, it is just plain healthy and you can't give too much.

We have 4 inside cats and 3 ferals that we take care of and trying to figure out the daily menu for this group is worse than cooking for the family...We always have dry food for the outside cats plus they get their canned food 3 times a day and they are now getting very choosey...With the inside babies, we almost have to put out a buffet...Each one likes something different, with Clancy our orange tabby, eating everything but dry...We give them Fancy Feast, but they only like certain things, we have tried almost every brand of cat food out there and still, they turn up their noses, swish their tails and walk away...We do give them tuna, that is mostly their bedtime snack, but not every night..Most of the time, they get the tuna with water, but every once in awhile I think the oil does them some good....Our furbabies are very spoiled, have us wrapped around their paws, but they're now our "kids" and we think they have a right to be spoiled.....

Your Jasper is beautiful, I love the orange tabbies, he looks so happy. Tuna is good as a treat, the feed store where I work has diffrent cat treats. My kitty Sheena loves something called Kitty Kavier, it is micro thin slced benito then freeze dried, she comes running when she hears the can opened.

Thank you to everyone who responded! I think that based on your advice I may still give him tuna, but once a month instead of twice. And, I will look into wet cat foods or treats. They are relatively cheap. Thanks also for everyone who commented on how beautiful he is. I just learned how to put pics on message boards using Photobucket. And, I share your opinions... he looks amazing and has a personality to match. If I weren't a college student I'd get him a Ruth's Chris steak for every meal! :O)
