Not all Cornish X created equal?
Comments (5)Roberta, there is a man named Tim Shell who has been working on this very thing...trying to develop a fast growing broiler that could be raised on pasture and would free range a bit and be hardier. I think one of his crosses is Cornish x Delaware. Anyway, his farm is called Pastured Peepers and I think one of his crosses is also called that, one is called Corndel. Do a Google for Tim Shell, Pastured Peepers, and Corndel and you'll know as much as I do about the subject. :~D (In other words, I haven't tried any of these birds or even raised my own broilers yet....just been researching and learning!) Here's a link to an article he wrote: http://www.apppa.org/Raising%20Your%20Own%20Meat%20Flock.doc...See MoreSeed stock...are all created equal (genetically)?
Comments (7)Question is regarding genetics -- assuming that seed supply was not inadvertently pollenated by another variety, should I expect to see different results from different seed suppliers? Generally speaking, no. However from year to year one can expect differences in traits that are influenced by environmental factors such as size and taste. There is also another potential reason, selection preferences. If supplier A and supplier B both received stock of a line at the same time but had been growing out stock seperately for a number of years then it is possible that there could be some selection pressure differences that developed over time. Such as if supplier A tended to cull out lower yielding but larger fruits types and supplier B selected for larger fruits vs higher yielding. If I buy some Delicious seeds, should I expect them all to be the same genetically? Even from a reputable supplier one can expect to see some variation within an open pollinated line. This is more likely when one is growing out larger number of plants. The variation will be from several potential factors including, but not limited too, environment, natural variation within in lot due to missed selection and occassional, though rare, mutations. For the most part they should be relatively the same if the grower for the seed company properly isolated and culled any off types. But again one has the potential for the same issue stated above about inadvertent selection pressure biases influence line selection between different growers/suppliers (ie this is what I think it should be). True hybrids should be highly uniform....See MoreAre all warming drawers created equally?
Comments (5)I'll link a thread below with lots of good info. As always, Plllog is a font of knowledge which she presents in a very easily understood manner. I bought a panel ready 30" KA unit and installed it in the forbidden under-the-oven-stack location. I specifically wanted a unit with the moist/dry function so I could keep crisp items like waffles crisp. Plus, mine has a slow cook function so can be used in place of a crock pot. Personally, I wouldn't keep items in the drawer longer than about 90 minutes or so. My manual, and a couple of others I read when researching before purchase, says not to hold cooked food for longer than 60 minutes. I find the food quality deteriorates at that point, but I think the manuals' recommendations have more to do with food safety. I'm surprised that I rarely see any discussion of the maximum or appropriate food holding time here when WDs are discussed. Comments (6)I have paperbacks my parents had that date back to the 50's and haven't broken down yet, but I have new paperbacks which break down and have pages comeing out after the second read. For SURE they aren't made as well as they used to be made and I'm sure that some are worse than others. The same goes with hard back books, they used to be made much better - I have old hardbacks that must be 50 years old now and are in fine shape except for some yellowing of pages. However, the hardbacks I buy now will never last that long or for as many repeated readings. Nothing is made as well as it used to be made and that WalMart book sounds like it was made like trash - read and toss. It's a real shame....See Moresuburbanmd
