frameless cabinets

I am beggining to get estimates for my kitchen. The local KD's use Ward's or Designer's Choice for frameless cabs -- anyone out there have experience with either of these brands? Have done a gardenweb kitchen forum search without any luck -- am also considering local cabinet makers and yes, Ikea. Thanks for any feedback. My plan is to display the final results in the "kitchens for under $20,000" thread . . .

I think my post back to you on another thread got lost in the crowd. I basically have the same plan - frameless and under $20,000. I am in the Atlanta area and Ward's is one of my choices. I am also getting a quote on Door Components LLC ???? They apparently have a frameless line now. They will also do a custom paint color for an upcharge and I think Ward's will do the same thing. I still have IKEA as a backup but because I want a painted door (not white though), I would have to add that cost/labor in as well.

Frameless vs framed is really Ford vs. Chevy. Pretty much all preference. I am a cabinetmaker in NC and I make both but 95% of the time I do framed. I personally think it is stronger. Plus I do a lot of inset with a bead and you have to have a frame.

I'm doing a concealed microwave (when we can actually get a GC...different story for a different day). And for it, we are planning on a barrister style door opening (it is one door and it opens upward and retracts in at the top of the cabinet). I felt that I would prefer one cabinet door to open as opposed to two for the microwave. And then we are doing a concealed small appliance cabinet that will have two doors and open the way you are mentioning for your microwave, although that may change to a barrister style also depending on if I can get enough height to that cabinet. But you are correct that if the doors are full overlay, they will cover everything. It doesn't matter if the cabinet is framed or frameless. What you need to do is have the doors for that cabinet NOT be full overlay but instead you'll do a flush/inset/furniture style door for that cabinet. There is an alternative to the two things I mentioned above that allows you to have the door lift upwards and it holds open up that way - that option allows for a full overlay door since it doesn't need clearance to retract inside the cabinet...drawback to it is that it blocks any cabinet that is above it while you are using the microwave.

thanks so much for all input thus far. I was thinking about a cottage, rubbed or brushed finish to mute stark white a bit. I think something too contemporary may also date. Guess I need to find a middle-of-the-road application. Will check out the manufactures. Aktillery9: Conestoga certainly has door numerous door styles. Its odd though that its difficult to ascertain box construction specs on their site. On video shows lots of gluing. Did all of your friends cabinets come in without issue? How was their customer service?

See if you have a Plain & Fancy dealer in your area. Their frameless "Medley" line is built VERY well and they use a higher end plywood. You will also get wood veneered interiors if you go with the plywood construction. Truly a beautiful frameless cabinet! They offer two boxes: 1. Standard Melamine Interior 2. Upgraded PLYWOOD with Wood veneer Interior Sorry for the poor quality...photos from my phone.
