We're almost done with our kitchen this week. Painters come in today to put up the last coat of paint and GC has to do a bit more wood work. But we're on the home stretch -- hooray!
We had some questions about what to do with the tile and decided, in the end, to wrap it around the wall with the door and do a grey/green grout to make it look more unified rather than boxy.

Comments (11)houseful, yes, that is indeed tropical green granite. it's funny, my wife and i both agreed we didn't want granite with any kind of movement, but when we were looking at honed absolute black against our cabinet door sample, my wife brought over the sample of the verde tropical and we both agreed that it really worked. oh, and yes, the lovely red plastic cups--a holdover from the temporary kitchen--are in the photos. that cabinet is going to eventually house the microwave and get doors for the front. that's a detail we're still waiting on. monkeyjac, thanks for your nice comments. i am in fact enjoying the product of sylvia and rocky's hard work right this very minute. quite the luxurious way to spend a sunday morning! they were a splurge, but a bit less of a splurge than i had originally planned. i wanted to go with a plumbed-in professional espresso machine, but due to the problems that i have with the one at work leaking, i opted to go with a simpler unit. far less expensive than plumbing the buffet area and buying a pro unit would've been, although it still feels like a splurge when i pull myself shots!...See MoreAlmost Done Craftsman Inspired Kitchen
Comments (19)Thanks again to everyone else who has posted their kind comments :) Rhome, I do not have plans. My old boss, drew up and informal before and after. Just enough to pass through our building department, who did not require an accurately scaled set. In fact, I was allowed to "sign and seal" the set on my own. We never actually lived in the house with the "old" kitchen - what you see was how it was when we looked at the house. The prior Owner wasn't living there, but left all his stuff in the kitchen while living elsewhere. I mean, there was even some things in the fridge! It was kind of weird if you ask me. We left the sink and oven in the same place for two reasons. One, I didn't want to move the plumbing and liked having the small window above the sink. Second, again, I didn't want to move the gas service, trying to keep costs down where I could. I couldn't get a 36" in due to a structural situation (that beam runs across the room right there and, the waste stack goes up inside the wall there also - would not have been cost effective to move that since we were not able to address the bathroom above yet). The refrigerator, we had to move and wanted to. It's old position made no sense on the back wall at all and since a sliding door was going in, it had to go. Putting it across from the sink and stove, was a much better solution, along with the microwave. The kitchen, flows well in that I don't have to walk very far to get to any of my appliances from each other at all. I designed the cabinets to hold what I need near each appliance. The two lower cabinets at the stove are all pull-outs and hold pots and pans (surprisingly a large amount of them fit into these). The large lower cabinet to the right of the sink on the corner is a double trash bin, easy to dump out leftovers before they go into the sink. Most dishes (and pots/pans) are stored right over the dishwasher and near stove. Glassware and serving pieces are over the counter where the toaster and coffee maker are 0 LOTS of space in these two. Pantry items are easily accessible (the one near the fridge is mostly dry goods; cereal, pasta, tea, coffee, cookies, etc.) and I included 3 drawers under the largest one to use for a bread drawer, a drawer for bags/foils/wraps and the last as my junk drawer. The cabinet under the microwave holds canned goods and the one next to it holds medications (I don't keep them in the bathroom) and some other miscellaneous things which I like having at hand in the kitchen. Under the sink is a pull-out, which houses the usual stuff. I have a cabinet specifically for herbs/spices and one specifically for oils/vinegars/smaller baking needs. I have 3 glass front cabinets for some of my Fiestaware and other decorative items and one other large pantry, as I mentioned, for larger cooking items, baking pans, and other things. The triangular end cabinet is a kind of catch-all for chopping boards, measuring cups, what have you and the lazy susan has colanders, plastic ware, casserole dishes and some other stuff. Oh, and the large cabinet over the fridge holds roasting pans, my huge lobster pot, and I'm not even sure what else right now lol. Eventually, the sort of empty space where the table now sits needs to be finished off somehow. I envision more cabinetry on the wall, probably with a TV inside it. Perhaps some more storage at the bottom with a counter coming off the wall. Or, a very small table, with cabinets. Just not sure yet. Ok I've blathered plenty. Comments (48)Well, I have a bit of an update. Most importantly, the first day of kindergarten went really well. I cried when I left the classroom, but my little one was really happy and chatting with his new friends. He came home happy each day he has been at the school. And he didn't care one bit about where his breakfast came from. :) As for the floor, things are not so good. The restoration company said that the water saturation levels need to be at or below 10% for the floor to be considered salvagable. Our floors are around 25% and have not come down much. Worse, the finish is "wrinkled" at the ends and edges of many of the boards, and we are told that this will not go away even if the floor miraculously dries, and this will cause the finish to flake off easily. And because it is engineered, and not solid, it apparently can't be sanded and refinished well, even through the manufacturer and the box said otherwise. So the restoration company thinks we should replace the floor. We got this news on Tuesday. Then yesterday, the insurance-company-recommended restorers came in for a second opinion. They also think the floor needs to be replaced and that we should file a claim. We called the insurance company yesterday afternoon and they said an adjuster would contact us within 2 days. So maybe I will know more by Friday. I will keep you all updated with how our insurance company reacts. This whole experience has made me rethink the wood. The wood we have now runs continously through the dining room, kichen, and a room we creatively call the fireplace room because it has, you guessed it, a fireplace. There are no walls between these rooms anymore. I think we may cut the floor at the transition between the kitchen and fireplace room (where a peninula run ends), and replace the wood in the kitchen and dining room with travertine tile, which we have in other parts of the house, including an adjoining foyer area. The wood in the fireplace room suffered no damage. The travertine is cheaper than the wood, and it is more resistent to moisture damage, but will stain more easily and be harder underfoot. I'll have to embrace the idea of a floor with a patina. Any thoughts? I am feeling better about everything, although I do avoid going into or even looking towards, the kitchen area. Comments (23)I posted these pics for "Igloo" on another message, but I wanted to show the colors of our island and cabinets to those who have been so helpful to me (& anyone else who is interested). The darker gray is for the island and the lighter one is for the rest of the kitchen cabs. So, we are getting close to deciding on using "Black Mosaic" for the island and looking for a good compliment for the rest of the kitchen countertops. Because of you all, I have the confidence now to mix different countertops, but just need to find the one for the perimeter cabs. Any help is, as always, appreciated. P.S. luckyj, here is a picture of the moulding at the top of the cabinets. It was something our contractor and I decided upon (not really liking what the cabinet company had in mind)
Some other info from our kitchen is below. It's a small, but very "moveable", space and gets a lot of wonderful sunlight (great here in Seattle) and yes, the arches are original to the house. We couldn't have done the work without me constantly coming back here w/ questions and to seek out ideas. Thank you!
