Kohler single handle shower

I have a driping Kohler single handle shower. Is the fix a do it yourselfer or do I need a pro. I am handy with tools , do electrical and woodwork, but never plumbing. If it is a do it yourselfer - what do I need to do, buy , fix. Sorry but I don't know plumbing.

First you need to ID the valve so you will know what parts are needed.

I bought a Kohler Ealing and right away, the hot water side didn't work. I swapped the lines and sure enough, the same side didn't work. I called Kohler and they said they'd send me a new valve, but it would take a month. When I got the valve, I had to go out and buy a 4mm hex wrench to remove the handle. When I got the handle off, the next step was to remove the bonnet and unscrew the nut holding the valve in place. It tried all my sockets and none of them fit. It turns out the nut is 23mm, an odd size, since none of the hardware stores carry them. I finally said "ENOUGH!" and bought a new Kohler Sous faucet, hoping to get my money back for the Ealing. After installing the Sous, the hot water worked, but the cold water was a drizzle. I guess I'm stuck with finding a 23mm socket and returning the Sous to Home Depot, since it's probably passed return time for the Ealing. DO NOT BUY KOHLER! Their quality is horrible.

Stop by your local Home Depot book section and checkout the Plumbing 1-2-3 book. I think they cost $20, but if you have a photographic memory, It's free. Checkout your piping first see if it is copper, galvanized, pex,... there could be an access panel in the wall behind the shower. While at Home Depot ask the associate to get you all the parts and have him explain how to do the job. Hope that helps, Dan Martyn

ArmChairShopper I ended up going with Bancroft. While I liked the Alteo (a) the diverter on the spout didn’t seem easy to use (b) It didn’t seem as high quality as the Bancroft While I liked the Refinia (a) I wouldn’t purchase it without seeing it in person (b) The diverter is non-traditional so I assume it might suffer from same issue as the Alteo (c) It didn’t seem as high quality as the Bancroft While I liked the Composed (a) The spout was way too long… and not a spout I liked (and they didn’t have a more traditional alternative I could see and verify) After seeing the Bancroft in person I found (a) it’s high quality (b) it looks great in chrome (c) its a safe bet; very classic/traditional (d) I can go with 1 set rather than mix/match
