Changing out over range microwave for range hood
Comments (5)Nadine--I think those slide out hoods are going to require a lot of the space in the cabinet above so you're going to lose that space anyway. So you might want to consider a more conventional undercabinet hood, too. Depending on your situation, you may be able to vent directly out the back of hood into your existing vent and not lose any of the cabinet space. It won't be quite as accessible though as you realize. I'm assuming that your rectangular vent is 3.25 x 10" which is roughly equivalent to a six inch round duct. So you need to look at hoods with CFM's sized for that size of duct. Unless you know exactly how your vent is situated, you need to remove the microwave. A lot of hoods will be adaptable to horizontal rectangular, vertical rectangular vent and vertical round exhaust. I know that my Zephyr hood had all three options. Zephyr Typhoon I disagree that you will get 'tremendous' noise. Not going to be whisper quiet but will most likely be substantially less noisy than most micro hoods. Comments (48)This is the first time I’m reading about this situation and I’m so glad to see you chose this route. In fact, had I read it when it was first posted, this is exactly what I’d have suggested because the hood isn’t subjected to anywhere near the same use and abuse as the cabinets—especially the ones around the sinks and dishwashers—not even close!...See MoreRange Hood vs. Microwave Vent
Comments (19)"Though I haven't tried this myself, logic would suggest a range hood that is encased by cabinetry would be less noisy than chimney style hood with the metal exposed. The cabinets might act as a noise buffer." One thing more powerful than logic is experience. The quietest (residential) configuration (that also meets high temperature cooking performance requirements) comprises a baffle hood, a down-slope centrifugal blower on the roof, and a silencer installed in the duct between them. However, like many aspects of a kitchen design, whether this configuration can even be achieved depends on several architectural factors not yet revealed....See MoreReplace a microwave with a venting hood.
Comments (10)There are two types of range hoods that deal with cooking steam, odors and smoke: ducted and ductless. I'm guessing you want to put in a ducted hood where the microwave is now. These are usually superior for keeping interior air clean, but they require access to the exterior of the house. If you can't go through the wall you have to go up then out. But you don't have to go straight up. There are OPTIONS once the pipe enters the ceiling joist area. The exhaust ducting can go up through the attic and roof, be turned to exit at a better location of the roof, or it can turn 90º and run between the ceiling joists to an outside wall vent. The bottom of the hood should be at least 24" above the range top, so you might have to remove the cabinet above the microwave, but you can run DUCTING THROUGH CABINET, though you will lose storage space. If none of these possibilities will work in your space, there is still the ductless hood. These pull steam, etc. through a filter and the cleansed air is recirculated back into the kitchen. Obviously they don't help with removing heat from the kitchen, and the filter does require CLEANING. Ductless hoods are much less expensive to install, because there are no ducts to install or cabinetry to remove....See MoreBuehl
