I think it would be Black Beauty or Secret Garden. I never had any early children't books.

As a former children's librarian, I always liked the Carl books--adventures of a dog, no words, and those books let the children make up their own stories. The Carl books put books into the hands of children who couldn't, or wouldn't read and gave them a positive experience. Then I would move the little readers right on to Gibbon's "Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire" followed by "War and Peace"!

Was going to say when my grandson was small and they had those big pieces, 6 and you were done. Must have been 3 years ago when we had a puzzle that came on the top of the Christmas popcorn tin. I tried to finish it, no one would help so it got put in a plastic bag, put inside the washed popcorn tin and taken to the thrift shop. There, done, brushing off my hands. I can do counted cross stitch all day, but have no patience for jigsaw puzzles.

Yes,sure did. Went to a party at my cousins just up the street.We had a fantastic time and set off fireworks at midnight which most of the neighbors did also.Got home about two in the morning,was up again at 8 since i have cousins comming over for dinner.I'll be more than ready to crash when they leave though!

I love reading anything Dr. Suess out loud, especially Yurtle the Turtle. For older kids (mainly girls)most anything by Judy Bloom.

When I was a kid the library had a series of books for children. They were biographies of famous people written to be understood by kids. I remember I really liked reading about Molly Pitcher, Juliet Low and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Wish I could find those!

As a child, Secret Garden.

As for books being published today, anything by Lindsay Barrett George.

I don't remember specific books, but I know they were animal books. I remember my first grade teacher reading us a chapter a day and that is what got me started reading.

"Oh The Places You'll Go" - A Dr. Seuss Book is right
up there - but I can't think of a Children's book
that I don't like. Never cared much for Maurice Sendak,
but he always wins awards, so see what I know.

I really liked the Borrowers books. Maybe that's why I have such an affinity for little things.

All the Laura Ingalls Wilder "Little House" books are among my very favorites.
I read the entire series at least once a year, have done so since the early 80s.

"The Wind in the Willows" has always been special for me. My absolute favourite teacher read it to us when we were in Grade 4 and it was the first book that I ever asked for as a present for Christmas. She also read us "The Water Babies" and "The Mill on the Floss".
