I think it would be Black Beauty or Secret Garden. I never had any early children't books.

As a former children's librarian, I always liked the Carl books--adventures of a dog, no words, and those books let the children make up their own stories. The Carl books put books into the hands of children who couldn't, or wouldn't read and gave them a positive experience. Then I would move the little readers right on to Gibbon's "Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire" followed by "War and Peace"!

Let's see- using only what I know I always have on hand it would have to be Shepherd's Pie- vegetarian style. Or a pizza from Dimitri's on the corner! Trish

I finally accepted the idea that I should change what I can, let go of what I can't and have the true wisdom to know the difference. This new way of life has had a dramatic effect on my ability to be content and relax to enjoy happiness.

Not that I can recall. The Bataan Death March ... and the years following ... was hell for those who went through it. When I went to Korea, in `53, just over 10 years later, we left Los Angeles by freighter and travelled on the Great Circle route, far north of Hawaii (put a string on a globe) ... for 18 days out of sight of land ... which gives one direct proof of how large the world is. As we approached the Phillipines, a typhoon was building and we went down the west side of Luzon, then turned in to 30-mile long Manila Harbour ... so the first sight of land that I had in the Orient was ... Corregidor, the rocky island fortress at the outer end of the harbour ... where the last surviving U.S. Army people holed up, following the Japanese invasion. It made a major impression on me that, apart from the results of World War II, we could not have been in that part of the world, helping people develop a better life. Had our ship been in those waters, ten years earlier ... we`d have been sunk ... or interned! And much of our work originally, just after the Korean War, was helping people who had left their home areas as refugees, as a result of political divisions and war, with nothing but the clothes on their backs, as they tried to get their lives back in some kind of order ... in an area much of which had been badly battered, fought over 3 or 4 times. Not a pleasant experience. Let us commit ourselves to seeking ways to build bridges of understanding between peoples, rather than warfare. May you have a blessed Easter ... if Easter is important to you. ole joyful

No, I would never do it. It just seems to be extremely unhealthy to me. Besides the worry of something going wrong, that jerking of the bungee cord pulling the person seems like it would be unhealthy for the back/neck/whatever.

I love reading anything Dr. Suess out loud, especially Yurtle the Turtle. For older kids (mainly girls)most anything by Judy Bloom.

When I was a kid the library had a series of books for children. They were biographies of famous people written to be understood by kids. I remember I really liked reading about Molly Pitcher, Juliet Low and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Wish I could find those!

As a child, Secret Garden.

As for books being published today, anything by Lindsay Barrett George.

I don't remember specific books, but I know they were animal books. I remember my first grade teacher reading us a chapter a day and that is what got me started reading.

"Oh The Places You'll Go" - A Dr. Seuss Book is right
up there - but I can't think of a Children's book
that I don't like. Never cared much for Maurice Sendak,
but he always wins awards, so see what I know.

I really liked the Borrowers books. Maybe that's why I have such an affinity for little things.

All the Laura Ingalls Wilder "Little House" books are among my very favorites.
I read the entire series at least once a year, have done so since the early 80s.

"The Wind in the Willows" has always been special for me. My absolute favourite teacher read it to us when we were in Grade 4 and it was the first book that I ever asked for as a present for Christmas. She also read us "The Water Babies" and "The Mill on the Floss".
