Toto toilet's flapper closes after I release the trip lever.
Comments (6)It's usually a result of the flapper not being fully pulled up high enough so that it's buoyancy keeps it up while the tank drains. It can be a few different things. The flush arm inside the tank could have displaced or bent downwards a bit so when you flush, the arm is not raising up high enough for the chain to pull the flapper into the vertical position. To repair, the arm can be reset to the proper angle where it joins the handle if it has slipped there. Depends on the design on how easy that is to do. Sometimes the handle/arm junction is fine, and it's the arm itself that has simply bent downwards due to years of flushing. Most people just bend the arm it upwards a bit. Do be careful if you bend it upwards. Don't bend it so high that it now hits the tank lid when flushed. And make sure that the now bent upwards arm doesn't catch on the fill mechanism when it is actuated. Sometimes leaving the arm as-is and simply shortening the chain can work. But it really depends on the arc-swing of the end of the arm. Also, the flapper itself could be deformed. You flush, and the flapper deforms enough so it is just pulled off the seat for water to start draining from the tank, but due to the deformation, it doesn't get pulled high enough to overcome the suction from the tank draining. The outflow of water simply reseats the flapper when the flush handle is released. Replacing the flapper is best, but sometimes shortening the flush chain can fix that too. Obviously, if you shorten the chain, make sure its still long enough so the flapper can reseat itself....See MoreMy toilet is singing.
Comments (8)Check that the flapper is closing completely (so that the tank actually fills up.) Is water leaking/spraying out of the top of the fill valve? Is so, replace it. Make sure the fill valve hose is clipped onto the downtube (in the center of the toilet) so water goes down into that tube. If you pull up on the float, does it stop? If so, you may just need to bend the float arm, if you have one, downward a bit (so when the tank fills up it pushes up enough to shut off the fill valve.) If there is no float arm (i.e. the float is part of the fill assembly, then you may need to adjust the fill valve assembly or just have it replaced. And if you have it replaced, watch closely so you can do it yourself the next time - it's not that hard....See Moreflapper closes too early/have to hold down handle to flush
Comments (4)Sorry, just copy this link inside the parenthesis to see the video (http://youtu.be/sxitnl-paqE), or see the link below. Unfortunately, while I did in fact replace the flapper, chain, and handle (in addition to tightening the chain between handle and flapper), these did not have any effect on the problem. I appreciate your input, klem1, though I think my problem lies elsewhere than the standard troubleshooting issues. Here is a link that might be useful: Video of my toilet issue...See MoreProblem with TOTO toilet flapper
Comments (20)The root cause of the leaking flapper is that it slid off center due to the pivot posts too wide, allows the flap to slide to one side and off center to the drain hole and leak. I cut two 5mm thick spacers from a rubber fuel hose (any hose size that's fits on the pivot post is OK. I like the thick fuel hose over the pet store clear tube). Each spacer looks like a complete ring, then I cut the ring open (like a pinky ring for the fat middle finger). With the opened rings, I slide it on the pivot post between the flapper leg and the overflow tube, and avoid the need to remove the flapper. Do this for both spacers. This helps keep the flapper center to the drain hole. Problem has been fixed for the last few years. Pic is my 12 years old original flapper on the Promenade Toto. The pulling chain on this model tend to pull the flapper forward and this added to the off-center. Why didn't I cut a thicker washer to fill the pivot post completely? Too thick washers can "bend" the flapper legs too much, and this shorten the flapper relative to the drain hole center, and may cause leak and I don't want a headache of hearing a baby cow crying in the bathroom in the middle of the night. you must say I cut the washer thickness just perfect for two straight flapper legs like a super model in red....See Morefritzgarden (7a)
