Prime will not remove enough of a significant amount of ninitrate to make a difference if you have fish in your tank. That's the reason for water changes. Nitrate is the final step for Ammonia in the denitrifying process. One type of bacteria takes the fish waste (ammonia and urea) and turns it into nitrite at which point you can add a bit of salt to your water (unless you use zeolite) to help protect the fish from nitrite toxicity which is blood poisoning, they cannot take up oxygen through their gills and ultimately suffocate. It's called brown-gill. Nitrate is finally made from the nitrite by another colony of a different type of bacteria in the bio-media. Nitrate is much less toxic than ammonia and nitrite, but BASICALLY they all represent N on the NPK. Chloramine is chlorine and ammonia bonded together because it is a more stable chemical and thus is more logical to use for water sanitation purposes. Once that ammonia is released, it can poison your fish so it needs to be neutralized. Nitrite as nitrate are just the bystander casualties. I believe that sodium is one of the ingredients in Prime and maybe it works in a similar way as a home water softener? I never though about it before but I used to use treated fish tank water. eager to hear other's input. Are there any chemists here? Edited to add: Mr.Blubs, if you do store the water, be sure to keep an air stone or something going. It can become anaerobic and toxic (spoiled) if left sitting stagnant.

This question will get more attention in the "plumbing" forum. First, units are very important. The manganese, particularly, is more likely to be ppb than ppm. It would be better to post a link to the report if you can. When plumbers say "conditioner" they typically mean a carbon filter, which will do virtually nothing for you. You probably need an iron filter (there are several viable options, not just aeration/filtration), but without knowing the units it is not possible to determine. If you do not want mineral buildup on fixtures, you will need a water softener as well. Is the water treated in any way prior to distribution? Is the iron ferrous (dissolved, clear-water) or ferric (particulate)? If the numbers you provided are in units of ppm, you are dealing with terrible water and you need to get a local water treatment professional involved. Your plumber, no matter how much experience as a plumber, does not have the necessary chemistry and water treatment expertise to help you with this.

There is no such thing as a "Water Conditioner". It's BS. Banish the term from your vocabulary. "Water Conditioner" is a term that snake oil salesmen use because "water softener" is too specific and their product doesn't actually do that. You often hear "Salt free" in conjunction with "Water conditioner". Run, do not walk, away from anyone talking about a "water conditioner" or "salt free" the term has absolutely no meaning. If you want to avoid scale, hard water spots, lime buildup, etc. then have your builder provide a "softener loop" in your plumbing design. This usually includes an unsoftened water line to the kitchen for drinking water as well as unsoftened water to the outside hose connections. You will have them install a water softener once things are built or have a third party install one. Test your water for hardness using a Hach test kit - or your water softener provider will do that. The point is that the only way to avoid hard water issues is by softening the water and that's something that you can definitively measure-both before and after-to prove that it's really doing the job. No other "Water conditioner" will do that. You really only "need" carbon filtered water for drinking and ice/water for the fridge. You don't need to flush your toilets with it, you don't need it for laundry. That said, you can do a whole house carbon filter if you really want to. Every water filter that does anything requires maintenance. Keep this in mind as you think through what you want. You can get a carbon filter for your drinking water that costs about $50 a year to replace or you can get a backwashing whole-house carbon filter that requires the media to be replaced at a greater cost every few years or so. Water softeners require salt regularly and resin changes every 12-15 years or so.
