Zeta Rod Water Softener

Does anyone know anything about the Zeta Rod water conditioning unit? It is saltless water softener. Just curious if its any good, etc. Any tidbits of info appreciated...

There are two good sources of information for the zeta rod, one is Zeta Corporation's website (www.zetarod.com). And there is now also a blog with plenty of technical information, case studies and open discussions for this product at www.zetablog.zetarod.com

Would have been more considerate for you to start a new thread rather than pollute someone else's thread when your post has nothing to do with the thread's content. Regarding your water problems... There are a variety of less effective ways to attempt to treat water which you seem to have discovered but it really is as easy as 1-2-3 1. Certified lab test to determine what needs to be treated. 2. Have a water treatment professional evaluate the environment and decide on the most inclusive and comprehensive treatment and hardware required. 3. Have a water treatment professional install and configure the equipment for correct and efficient operation.

I looked on the filter housing and on Ace Hardware's website, but I don't see a flow rate listed for that one. Of course that will decrease as the filter gets plugged. I will have to stop by Ace and see if they list it on the box. There has not been any major degradation in water flow experienced while showering. Though I know, the change would be gradual as the filter fills up. Looking at the filter with a flashlight, most of the particles seems small, clay like, which we have lots of here. It's easy enough to add one back into the line if need be. Yes, that is quite a difference in usage and cost. 12 bags potassium at $20 each = $240 40 bags potassium at $20 each = $800 That definitely covers the return shipping charges many times over. I forgot to ask, how do I get those stainless crimp bands off the PEX without damaging the tubing?

Kirk, there are lots of things to consider. A softener shouldn't reduce the pressure much unless it is undersized or installed wrong. My softener is supposed to drop 8 psi at 8.5 gpm. That is a lot of water. If the pressure dropped when you installed the softener, then it could be a defective softener or incorrect installation. If you had good pressure when the softener was first installed, then you need to make sure the softener is regenerating correctly. I am assuming this unit uses salt. How much salt do you go through in a month as compared to other households your size? My softener goes though about 20-40 pounds a month. Is the softener cycling correctly according to the manual? If you donÂt have a manual, try downloading one off the Internet. You can probably get the full service manual. Is this an "on demand" unit or does it just regenerate every few days? Maybe your settings are wrong. You might try getting a test kit and testing the water before and after the softener. If the softener isn't working you should be able to tell in the water quality. I'm not an expert, but I have read a lot about ways to improve my well water. Try doing several manual regeneration cycles to see if that restores the pressure. If that doesnÂt work, you may need to replace the resin bed, or in the case of an inexpensive softener, maybe replace the whole thing. From what I have read, iron is not really good for a softener. I was told that a small inexpensive softener that is not designed to handle iron would only last a few years at the most. I bought a Whirlpool 40,000 grain unit at Lowes a couple years ago and have since added chlorine injection and a carbon filter to get rid of my iron.

Do you know your water's present hardness level? Put it on the main line and do both. Your laundry, dishes, and hair will love you for it. Too soft? There's only "soft" -- which is zero grains -- and varying degrees of hardness above that. For example, my supply is 7-8 grains. When it goes though the softener, it comes out zero grains -- which is what "soft" water is. There are many components of water's taste. However, I've never known anyone who liked the taste of softened water. I don't. It's not terrible or anything, just blah. Where I live, tap water tastes terrible. Anybody with any money either has RO under the sink or buys bottled water for cooking/mixing/drinking. RO removes pretty much everything. It's not far removed from distilled, really, but tastes much different from water from softener only. Bottled water is usually RO'd local water with trace minerals added back. It's taste is superior, IMHO, but its relatively expensive. If your tap water tastes OK to you, I suspect it would be a very simple matter to run a seperate tap with un-softened water to the sink and frig for drinking water. Cheaper than RO, surely, and no maintenance.

Try a carefully designed test with controlled conditions.
There are any number of reputable labs that could design and execute such a test.

Until such independent third party testing is completed, you are selling snake oil.

You are correct, any new technology must be properly tested, studied and validated before it should be allowed out there in the market. Who would you suggest, or approve of as a third party non-biased testing institution? Perhaps someone far away, like the University of Twente in the Netherlands?
Or how about Orange County Water District in LA (http://www.che.utoledo.edu/nams/2004/viewpaper.cfm?ID=805). If those two are not considered reliable enough, how about the US Army Core of Engineers Research Lab (CERL) and the US Air Force ?(http://www.govenergy.com/pdfs/water/WheelerWater4.pdf).
I am sure however that no matter how many studies are done on a new technology, there are always going to be skeptics and critics of the technology.

Has anyone been able to repeat one of them?
