Danby Marble for Island (Can't See Old Postings)

Apologies for asking a question I know has been asked before, but I've been trying for a while to access the old postings without success. Bing generates old postings in cached but I can't get it to find the Danby posts, and Google doesn't do cached GardenWeb postings. Frustrating!

So...does Danby marble hold up better than other kinds of marble in a kitchen? Sounds like sealers help with the staining but how bad is the etching?

I'm leaning heavily toward marble at this point - I really wanted to do it the last time I did a kitchen in 1991(!) and regretted it ever since. I want to know whether the Danby is worth the extra money.

For those debating whether white kitchens/marble is classic or trendy, I don't know the answer but I've gravitated to this kind of kitchen for 20 years. The only difference now is the lines have gotten a bit more contemporary with more SS, which I like.

Danby IS quarried in the USA and has one of the highest ratings of any marble
that you could use in your kitchen .

I have been VERY big on Danby over the years, and like many other people that
have it in their homes - Danby is a GREAT PRODUCT!!!

Which ever way you decide to go - I would strongly recommend that you have
the finish HONED on your marble tops - it will not show the wear anywhere NEAR
as fast as a polish surface....

Thank you, tantadoodles. I sealed it with "MB Stone Care MB-4 Stone and More Impregnator/Sealer" which is supposed to last 10 years according to the label. (The owner of the company is a guy named Maurizio, who is pretty much of a stone expert on the internet. He sure knows more than I!) I have to say that since posting my picture, I have further etched the heck out of the island with plain water, tomato juice (wiped up without staining, but left an etch mark), etc. It is going to etch like crazy and I'm not worrying about it. All the marble in our house is etching from plain water droplets, and we have a water-softener and whole house filter! I bought our Danby at Dente Trading Co., Inc. in NJ. they had both honed and polished and the honed was dull and pretty boring. The polishing really brings out the colorful swirls you see in my picture above. Our fabricator (Globe) offered to do a lower polish level for the marble, to more closely match the duller sheen of the perimeter counters, which are Caesarstone Raven. (For those who don't know, the manmade quartz countertops have a less shiny polished finish than regularly polished granite and marble.) Knowing what I know now, I'd still get the same marble, polished. Just know it won't look perfect or brand new for long. Good luck with your decisions, everyone! lynn2006 - Thank you! The photos really don't do it justice. Such a calm, serene stone with a cottage/coastal look to it. My DH likes it, too; I think it's both masculine & feminine. Yes, the fact that it won't etch is huge. They won't guarantee it won't etch but if it does, the pattern & subtle texture will help to mask it. Marble etching doesn't bother me; more so, my DH. So this stone works for both of us. I love that it is not a polished stone; it looks so different from the other Sea Pearl slabs I was considering primarily because of the matte finish. Fingers crossed the quote doesn't blow the budget! holly-kay & romy - I appreciate your input re your sinks! Now I have that decision to make. :) My DH likes stainless; I like the apron look. Our fabricator said he makes a cost-efficient "faux apron" sink by using a stainless steel undermount sink with an apron front made out of the counter material. He's going to provide photos of previous jobs; says it looks nice. That might be the way to go for us; a nice compromise.

I love the Danby Marble. For over a year now, I have had 2 square samples I use to put my coffee mugs on and I keep in the kitchen to get abuse and they look as good as new to me. I really love this marble so much. When I am ready to redo my kitchen again, this will be a top contender along with a few others.

Thanks for your responses - I spied sentence fragments of an old posting via Google of someone saying their Danby etches "like crazy" and it got me worried. Appreciate the votes of confidence! Hope they have large slabs as our planned island is very long.

I love danby... but the cost seems to be SOOO much more then carrara, at least in the NY area

ANY Polished Marble will etch like crazy if it is exposed to the right corrosive
subatances - like lemon juice, vinegar, grapefruits, limes, oranges, Coca-Cola
or Pepsi, etc....

THIS is why I am a strong advocate of people having a honed or "textured" finish
on their marble that they elect to have installed in their kitchens.

Please Note this:
I am NOT a schill for Danby marble - I'm not a paid spokesman - I am
a Fabricator that's been doing slab work for the last 25 years...
That said..... of all of the "white-ish" marbles you could choose
on the planet - DANBY will (IMHO) hold up BEST for your application -

Not sure, sfmomof2, but that fragment of post you may be seeing is one by Smarge. Smarge has a fantastic kitchen with Danby marble counter tops! However, she chose her stone to be polished instead of honed. A major downside of polished marble is that it shows etches way more than honed marble does (as warned by Kevin above).
I have a honed Danby marble top for my cafe dining table and I absolutely love it. If there are etches on it (and I'm sure there are), I really don't even notice them. No issue with staining or chips whatsoever.

Ajard: I got my Danby from SMC stone in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. They have as substantial stone selection and very well priced in comparison to many other yards in the NYC metro area. Yes, the Danby was more than the Carrara -- but not outrageously so. If you choose to check them out, ask for Marcus.

This is great. It is definitely more than cheaper marbles but if it holds up better I think the difference would be worth it. I'm planning it for our island, which will be the focal point of the kitchen. And while I'm a pretty good cleaner I got two small kids. Thanks so much!

Hello! Thought someone might like to see pics of my Danby marble island countertop, since I think most of the old thread with pics of my kitchen in them are lost forever.

Danby Marble "holds up" just fine, but I find it chips much easier than my perimeter countertop, which is Ceasarstone "Raven". It also etches incredibly easily, and not just with the things you'd expect. Egg white even causes a mark. I don't mind/care anymore and just cook on it. We haven't gotten around to having the entire top "honed", which is an easy expense to put off, and meanwhile, the more I cook on it, the more etches all over it gets.

Zero stains, which is awesome. I've left everything on it at one time or another, even tomato sauce for a bit. No stains. Love how it looks and have no regrets for installing it.
