Do you have a recipe for gourmet doggie treats?

I'm thinking of giving some treats, some recipes or some of each as a gift to a dog owner.

When I was doing a lot of training for obedience competition, I would microwave thin slices of turkey hotdogs until almost crisp. Just array on a paper plate, microwave a minute at a time.... I forget how long it took.

Another wonderful treat: blend a banana, a quart of plain yogurt, and a couple big spoonfuls of peanut butter. Freeze in ice cube trays.

Jim - That is a very nice idea! I wish my friends thought of something like that for me...

Sushipup - Thank you for those dog treat recipes, I like the one with the hot dogs. I buy the angus beef, maybe I can put them in the dehydrator?
The one with the banana sounds great for a hot day!

I like the Bil-Jacs liver training treats at Petco. The regular size is a bit over half an inch, the Little Jacs size is about 1/3 of an inch. They cost about three to four dollars per bag. I've only seen two dogs that did not like them. I have no connection to Bil-Jac or Petco. The grocery stores near me do not carry them.

Found this one on line. Not sure if it is the one that you are looking for. There are some other dog treat recipes as well. Hammy Whammy Treats Ingredients: 1cup wheat germ 1 jar (2.5 ounces) of strained Ham baby food (you can substitute strained beef baby food if you like) 1/2 teaspoon of beef bouillon granules 1 tablespoon grated mild cheddar cheese 2 teaspoons milk Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In mixing bowl, combine wheat germ, baby food, bouillon granules, and milk. Roll into dough with hands and then work in cheese. Lightly grease cookie sheet. Roll dough into small balls about 1 inch in size and gently pat with hands and place on cookie sheet. You can lightly press the cookies with a cold fork to make a criss cross pattern, the way you would press peanut butter cookies. Bake for approximately 20 minutes and remove from oven and cool before serving. You can wrap the cookies in plastic food storage bags and refrigerate until ready to use.

The pumpkin is great. I'm not comfortable with the Crisco. This is a favorite dog-people treat I've baked for gifts: Peanut-Banana Biscotti -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 5 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup chopped peanuts -- (up to 1/2 cup) 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 large egg -- lightly beaten 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1 1/2 cups pureed bananas 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract water Preheat the oven to 325 and set a rack on the middle level. Have ready one or two ungreased nonstick baking sheets. (Or line regular baking sheets with parchment paper.) MIx the flour, peanuts and baking soda together in a large bowl. Gradually stir in the remaining ingredients, except the water, until lumpy but blended. Add enough water, a teaspoon at a time, to make a stiff dough. Knead by hand until thoroughly mixed. (Or blend everything in a food processor.) For very large biscotti, form the dough into 2 logs, each about 2 1/2 inches high, placing one on each baking sheet. Flatten each log so that it is 6 inches wide and 1 inch high. For medium-size biscotti, form 4 logs, 2 on each sheet, and flatten each into loaves that are 3 inches wide and 1 inch high. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove to wire racks and let rest for 10 minutes. (Leave the oven on.) Transfer the logs to a cutting board and slice into 1/2-3/4-inch pieces. (It's easiest to slice them on the diagonal, using a serrated bread knife.) Return the slices to the baking sheets and bake for about 20 minutes longer, turning once, until they are golden brown. Cool on racks. Store in a tightly closed tin at room temperature. Make 30 (large) or 60 (medium) dog (or people) biscuits. Here's one....has an awful lot of honey though.. Snickerpoodles Dog Treats 1/2 cup canola oil 1/2 cup shortening 1 cup honey 2 eggs 3 3/4 cups white flour 2 teaspoons cream of tartar 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 cup cornmeal 2 teaspoons cinnamon Mix vegetable oil, shortening and honey together until smooth. Add eggs and beat well. Blend in flour, baking soda and cream of tartar. Knead dough until mixed well. Shape dough by rounded teaspoons into balls. Mix the cornmeal and cinnamon together in a bowl and roll balls in mixture. Place 2 inches apart on a cookie sheet that has been sprayed with a nonstick spray. Press the balls down with a fork twice going in 2 different directions or press with your favorite stamp. Bake 8 minutes at 400. Remove from baking sheet and cool on a rack. And here are more....which are a bit more trouble: What the doggies like is garlic and meat paste. I make my own meat paste, from leftover pot roast and canned beef broth, in the food processor. For the picky-est of the picky eaters try cheese or cheese-and-bacon. What you're going for is a thick, non-fluffy, very heavy dough that smells strongly like meat and garlic. And a low oven temperature, to bake them hard and long-lasting. BASIC RECIPE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour, or any combination of heavy, whole-grain flours 1/2 cup nonfat powdered milk 1 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. Lawry's Seasoned Salt 1 large egg 1 tsp. minced garlic 1/2 cup hot meat paste (see notes above) 1/4 to 1/2 cup very hot water Mix together well with an electric mixer. Turn out onto a floured pastry cloth and knead until elastic and "set." Cut with dog-bone cutter, or with the edge of a drinking glass. Spray cookies sheets with Pam and place biscuits on them. They will not spread at all, so you can place them very close together. Bake at 250 degrees F. for one hour, turn trays 180 degrees, and bake at least another half hour. FOR CHEESE BISCUITS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you know that you're going to be making doggie treats, save up all the hard bits of leftover cheese. Grate them up and use them, in place of the meat paste. If you do not have leftover cheese, then buy a bag of Kraft grated cheese, sharp cheddar, and use that. Once the biscuits are on the cookie trays, you can sprinkle them with grated Parmesan. FOR CHEESE-AND-BACON ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Add Hormel's Real Bacon Bits (they're in the salad dressing section of your grocery store) ******************************************* Fido's Favorite Treats Yield: 1 batch 1 c. Rolled oats 1/3 c. Margarine 1 c. Boiling water 3/4 c Cornmeal 1 tbp. Sugar 2 tsp. chicken or beef flavored instant bouillon 1/2 c. Milk 4 oz (1 cup) shredded cheddar cheese 1 Egg, beaten 2 c. To 3 cups whole wheat flour. Heat oven to 325 degrees. Grease cookie sheets. In large bowl, combine rolled oats, margarine and boiling water; let stand 10 minutes. Stir in cornmeal, sugar, bouillon, milk, cheese and egg; mix well. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off. Add flour 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition to form a stiff dough. On floured surface, knead in remaining flour until dough is smooth and no longer sticky, 3 to 4 minutes. Roll or pat out dough to 1/2 inch thickness, cut with bone shaped cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheets. Bake at 325 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes on until golden brown. Cool completely. Store loosely covered. Makes 3 1/2 dozen large dog biscuits or 8 dozen small dog biscuits. *************************************** Here is a doggy bday cake recipe as well...grin DOGGIE BIRTHDAY CAKE Don't forget the "Frosty Paws" from the grocery store to top off the cake. 1 cup whole wheat flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 cup chopped/unsalted peanuts 1/4 cup oil 1/3 cup honey 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon soy flour 1 egg 5 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup ground or grated carrots Preheat oven to 325°. Combine flours, baking soda and peanuts. Mix in egg, oil, vanilla, honey and carrots until well combined. Pour mixture into a prepared cake pan and bake for 15 to 20 minutes.

You can google dog treats and get a ton of recipes for baked goods, all sound good. The hotdog treats are just the right size for training tidbits. I've made little cellophane bundles filled with these, tied in a Christmas ribbon. And yes, the frozen treats are a favorite. I freeze it inside of the big marrow bones that I get from The Red Barn. Made in the US, too.

I make these

Dog Biscuits

2 3/4 C. whole wheat flour

1/2 C. powdered milk
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1 egg
6 Tbs. veg.oil
8-10 Tbs. water
2 small jars strained baby food (beef, chicken, lamb, or liver) I use canned cat food, which I always have on hand.

Mix all ingredients together and knead for 3 min. Roll out to 1/2 inch thick. Use a dog bone shaped cookie cutter, and place biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet poke with a fork. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 min. Makes approximately 2 dozen doggie biscuits.

The neighborhood dogs seemed satisfied, though they eat just about anything.

Here are two that I have made. One year I found cookie cutters in the shapes of my dogs and made a batch of each (cookie and dog shape) and gave them to my friend's that owned pets as a holiday gift.

Both recipes came from the forum way way back....the first one was posted by Marlen, she passed away years ago. The second I don't have credited. If anyone recalls whose recipe it is, please let me know so I can give proper credit and edit my copy to include whom I got it from.

FidoÃ¯Â¿Â½s Favorite Treats

1 cup rolled oats
1/3 cup margarine or butter
1 cup boiling water
3/4 cup cornmeal
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons chicken or beef instant bullion
1/2 cup milk
4 ounces shredded cheddar cheese ( 1 cup)
1 egg, beaten
2 cups white or wheat flour

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.Grease cookie sheets. In large bowl combone rolled oats, margarine and water; let stand for 10 minutes. Sitr in cornmeal, sugar, boullion, milk,cheese and egg. Mix well. Add flour 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition to form stiff dough.
On floured surface, knead in remaining flour until dough is smooth and no longer sticky, 3 to 4 minutes. Roll or pat out dough to 1/2 inch thickness; cut with cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on cookie sheets.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely. Store loosely covered. Makes 3 1/2 dozen large biscuits.

Molasses Onassis

2 c whole wheat flour
1/2 c white flour
1T salt
2T vegetable oil
1/4 c milk
1/4 c cornmeal
iT garlic powder
1/4 c oatmeal
1/4 c molasses
2 large eggs

Preheat oven to 350F. Mix dry ingredients, add oil, molasses, eggs and milk. Ad more milk as needed to form a firm dough. Roll dough o it is 1/4" thick and cut into dhapes. Bake on lightly greased cookie sheet for 25-30 minutes.

Thanks for the help, everyone.

I'm trying to learn how a dog food differs from people food, nutritionally and in flavor. In most cases they don't look terribly different. Many recipes seem to be based on flour or cornmeal. Peanut butter shows up often also.

You might look up some info on raw dog foods. As in the BARF diet, Bones and raw food. Lots of nutritional info there. Dogs don't normally eat grains, many question the nutritional value of such.

Yeah I wonder about all the "people food" we are feeding our dogs too. It makes sense that they should be eating raw food but then again, all my dogs have been fed regular old grocery store dog food like Alpo and Pedigree and they all lived to be mid teens and without any major health issues either or weight problems for that matter.

I have also heard discussion from a vet tech that said she has seen many problems with ingesting bones both cooked and raw at the clinic she works for. Many surgeries!

My little high maintenance fur baby is on a salmon, potato, pumpkin diet. Developed quite a flaky skin, itchy feet problem and the vet suggested this diet....no grains no meats. I make him treats by mixing one can plain pumpkin, 3/4 cup instant potato flakes, and a couple tablespoons olive oil. Shape into a small logs, slice thin and bake at 350 for about 30 minutes. However, the last time I made them, I put in the dehydrator along with some jerky (for sons) and they turned out perfectly and he loves them.
FYI, I am slowly adding some meat back into his diet to determine what the allergy is.
