New range - gas line question

I purchased a new GE Profile gas slide-in range. I also bought a new gas line for it. My question is: Do I need to use gas threadding compund, or whatever it's called, on the threads? Or is just screwing it in fine?

What kind of connection?
Tapered pipe thread require thread sealer.
The fittings for flex line require sealer for the adapters to the pipe, but not on the flex line to adapter connection.

Purchase a bottle of leak check.

It's a 4ft. pre-fab yellow flex line. The threaded connections are already installed. All I need to do is screw one end to the hard line and one to the range.

I have the Jenn air pro style all gas slide in range. It's been installed for about 3 weeks, only, so I cannot speak to long term reliability but so far I love it. Great flexibility with the burners--one dual burner (high output -low output/simmer), one very high output burner; one simmer and one moderate size. Rangetop cooking is much improved over my old, nice but basic GE gas cooktop. Oven is great. It seems to work like a dual fuel since the convection function works with an electric element and the bake feature works with gas. The electronics are complicated but I used to have a GE double oven that also looked like it could launch the space shuttle. I had to have the GE control panel replaced for $$$. So, for this one I bought an extended 5 year warranty that covers everything. I can only say: so far so good with the Jenn air range. I really like the flexibility, it cooks fast ...the performance has been good so far.

Correct, WC is water column. With natural gas 1 PSI = 27 WC. Most residential houses (as I understand it) are about 20 PSI coming in stepped down to 2 PSI for the meter. It's still 2 PSI coming out of the meter which is then regulated down to 1/4 pound. That equals roughly 6.75 WC. The regulators are supposed to keep a constant pressure on the output side so 2PSI (aka 54 WC) is plenty. Since the pressure is mostly constant the only thing that can effect the flow is the size of the pipe. Technically you could achieve a similar BTU output by jacking up the pressure to about 1/3 of a pound (10WC or so) but plumbers are loathe to do that because it's non standard. With natural gas it's hard to argue with that logic. Curiously my old cooktop was the same way as cooks1818 just described. 1/2" pipe was all I could see but once we ripped up the floor, sure as shootin, it was all 3/4" that was stepped down for the last 18" or so. -Stooxie

Because there is a flex line between the gas outlet and the Bluestar, the only condition is that the gas outlet (and a small shut off valve) sit below the back of the range and between the legs. The outlet can be in the wall (set low) or in the floor under the range- but it has to clear the legs. Same with the electric outlet. Either outlet could be to the side of the range, but then it would show and affect anything that would later go against that wall.

A proper 120v circuit has a hot, neutral, and a ground. What you describe is a hot and a ground. While such an arrangement will function it's certainly not to code and potentially dangerous. As suggested your best bet is to run a new 20-amp circuit. The other alternative and I'm not sure if current code allows this is to remove the existing 50 amp, double pole breaker and replace it with a 20 amp, single pole breaker. Use one of the two insulated wires in the existing cable as your hot and the other as the neutral. The uninsulated wire is the ground. The problem is that the heavier wire typically won't fit in a 20 amp breaker or receptacle. So you need to connect a short length of 12 ga. wire at each end of the two heavy wires, most likely with a split bolt. I'm sure someone will comment on if such a method meets current code.

You need to install the Stainless flare fittings that came with the new flex pipe on the stove and on the gas pipe (or shut off valve). They must be installed with the appropriate sealant -- either yellow Teflon tape or pipe dope made for gas lines (use the dope). Be sure that you have a wrench on the stove fitting to avoid transferring the torque to the stove fitting -- it's usually a regulator or something that doesn't appreciate being twisted.

You then install the flex line onto the flare fittings without sealant.

You must test the connections after you are done. I usually use soapy water (look for bubbles).

It is fairly straightforward, but you do need to do a good job and not cut corners. Gas is safe when you do a good job but it can level your house (and the neigbors')if you don't.

BTW: Don't count on the gas valve to give you a positive shut off. Cap the pipe if you have it open. I have seen too many leak significant amounts of gas while I was replacing an appliance.

Check your local code carefully before connecting this cooktop.

Some codes do not permit flexible gas connectors but rather they require all gas appliances to be plumbed with iron pipe the full distance. For this reason the appliance manufacturers allow a rather large opening through the back of the appliance cabinet and the actual point of connection to the gas regulator in the appliance is in the front 1/3 to 1/2 of the appliance frame. This permits running a gas pipe from the wall and extending out about 12" to a gas cock type shutoff valve. With the large opening the range or cooktop can then be slide in place and the end of the gas line with the shut off will now be inside the appliance cabinet. Once in place the cooktop can be raised allowing access to connect a nipple from the stop cock to a union and a second nipple from the union to the 1/2 female iron pipe thread in the appliance gas regulator thus completing a rigid gas pipe connection.

When using a flexible connect the codes prohibit a flexible connector from passing through any floor, wall partition, cieling or appliance housing.

Properly when connecting a gas range or cooktop with a flexible connector you must first install a rigid pipe extending from the gas regulator to the exterior of the appliance cabinet and the transition for rigid pipe to flex pipe must occur outside the appliance housing.
