Upgrading an aging boiler for hot water

Howdy all,

We're in the midst of the process to buy our first home here in bucolic Massachusetts. An early task will be to address the 25 year old oil-fired boiler that heats domestic hot water and the baseboard radiators. While it's still in decent shape and running at its original 80% efficiency by the oil company, the tap water swings from 100-150F randomly. It was suggested to us that we could add an indirect fired tank as an inexpensive way to even out the temperature swings and get a few more years out of the boiler. There's no gas service on this street so we're going to go forward with oil in the future.

Some poking around also revealed we could use a direct oil-fired water tank, and there is also a tankless oil heater by Toyotomi.

Next year, to take advantage of the tax credit and good southern exposure I will investigate solar hot water heating. It seems that the indirect tank is probably the easiest to integrate into a solar system in the future, and would continue to be useful once the old boiler has finally kicked the bucket.

Any thoughts? Indirect tank on an old boiler, direct oil-fired storage tank, or a tankless?
